Miyamoto: Pikmin 4 in development, "very close to completion"

We already have Pokkén Tournament likely serving as the last summer game for the Wii U & SMTxFE being the Wii U's Early 2016 title in the West. You still have to account for Japan, so maybe Pikmin 4 will fill that void. This is assuming that Nintendo doesn't save Pikmin 4 for the NX Platform.
So you're thinking like Spring 2016?

Nintendo has been very quiet after what happened to Itawa (in respect to him and his family of course), but maybe this Pikmin 4 announcement is the first come back sign.. I hope for a new nintendo direct and more news from Nintendo soon.

What a strange way to break news. I wonder what's going to be unique about Pikmin 4? Is it a filler title for the WiiU as it inevitably winds down in 2016? an NX game?

I think Pikmin could explore a new genre but that probably won't happen with 4.

Its very early to do something like this. They barely started to improve on multitasking and they need to do more of that before they explore anything else.

Time limits need to stay as well.

Pikmin 2 was confirmed in a Playboy interview, 3 was casually confirmed at a roundtable. Confirmation in a Eurogamer interview is quite normal.

Thank you Gods of Nintendo.

<3 Pikmin. Hope this one has a bit more of a funny slant to it, ala Pikmin 2.

Pikmin 3 was hilarious at times but only if you keep bugging the characters when they are inside the ship in-between missions.
The biggest mistake with pikmin 3 was not including the piklopedia and it's humour, if miyamoto wanted to re-introduce this franchise then that's one of the key features and a huge ommission.

All they had to do was make the gamepad a camera(which they did) but when you take photos of enemies, wildlife and plants they get added to the piklopedia.
It was such an obvious thing to do i'm amazed it wasn't included or added as dlc.

If it's still coming to the Wii U, yeah.

Nintendo's currently hiring people to work on the Directs, so we'll get Nintendo Directs back in the near future.

Omg this is the best idea

A weird way to announce a new game, but anyway… Awesome news!
Pikmin is, in my opinion, one of Nintendo’s best series.

Yeah I'm sure Pikmin 4 will stay in the RTS genre. But I've always felt like Pikmin could make for a killer side scrolling platformer, a bit like A Boy and His Blob or even a puzzler, I think there is a ton of spin-off or genre exploration potential with the Pikmin IP.

I was honestly shocked that it wasn't included or added later as dlc.
they did the hard work which is getting a functioning camera which takes photos to work well.
They just needed to add a piklopedia which updates when you take a photo of something, the idea fits in perfectly with the whole exploring a new planet and research theme and would have made the gamepad more worthwhile.
It also would have done want miyamoto wants, which is to expand and bring new audience to the series. Having a log book of all the games characters and information only helps to sell the series as a bigger universe.
pikmin 1 and 3 have better worlds to explore but the piklopedia in 2 really makes the game shine.

when they said it included the ability to take photo's like above i was 100% convinced that this is what they would do.

I don't think there's a lot of value to the Pikmin IP outside of the mainline titles, and even then, I'm surprised we're getting Pikmin 4.

If it is indeed close to completition I think it definitely will be a Wii U game.
I guess a port to NX is possible but I don't think they'll bother.

There have been quotes that suggest the NX may be absorbing the WiiU's architecture, possibly making development and porting between the two somewhat of a breeze for developers

Pikmin 3 is my personal game of the generation, and obviously I loved a lot the first two.

If it's coming so fast, they could pull a Galaxy 2 here. My bet is that they are using the third game engine and assets to build a "more of the same" sequel for Wii U, so it would be a way to exploit the amiibo succesful trend even with the Pikmin IP and the final bang for the console along with the new Zelda.

But, my friends, I would be happy to play it even on a (new) 3DS.

Did they say this? I mean, losing Iwata sucked, but he was still only one man, he can't have been doing everything for the Nintendo Directs on his own. Ande ach region already has a person capable of doing the job, that new guy they already brought in for Japan, Shibata for Europe and Bill/Reggie for NA.
They shouldn't need to hire many more people at all for it.

I thought Pikmin 3 was pretty funny.

It had moments, but Pikmin 2 was brilliant for this. For one, the whole concept lent itself to that constant humour - picking up things that are every day objects to you and me, and then interpreting them through the eyes of an alien was a consistently funny gag. The stuff he wrote about the objects he found were almost always hilarious. Additionally, the piklopedia was a sore loss that also removed opportunities for immersion and hilarity. I like Pikmin 3 enough, but I just prefer the tone of Pikmin 2 with its mix of relaxing challenges and always hilarious object finding. Pikmin 3 more comes in fits and burts, and there's no where near as much and it never quite reaches the funny heights of Pikmin 2's gimmick.

I'd love to get into the Pikmin series but I cannot stand losing the little guys. Every time they scream makes me weep, haha.

For people bringing up Pikmin 3's poor sales, Pikmin doesn't seem like an expensive game to make.

It's also one of the genres that a platform holder can easily afford to make while diversifying their games portfolio.

Nintendo fans constantly complain about company's focus on Mario, Smash and Zelda.

Why complain when they foster a quality IP that usually gets less of a spotlight?

That's the benefit of a platform holder. They can eat these types of costs.

One of great example of this is SEGA. Tons of creative IPs when a platform holder, yet much more conservative when a 3rd party.

I wonder if the short movies released not long ago have anything to do with the development for Pikmin 4?

I can't wait for the Pikmin amiibo, the cutest amiibo possible.

People talking about a 3ds game have nothing in common with the Pikmin series, really. That would be the worst idea gameplay wise.

Also, while I loved the touch screen control implemented later, a mobile Pikmin game will suffer from a great imprecision in the absence of a stylus.

Jesus that's awesome. Didn't think we would see one for a while due to 3 low sales.

But maybe Nintendo knows they have something genius on there hands and doesn't want to give up.

2 things I want:

More multitasking between all the different characters beyond simple exploration and gathering Fruit. There was so much potential in Pikmin 3 but it was never fleshed out into anything interesting.

More verticality in the level design. I dunno, I just want to be able to climb things and then use the camera mode to take pretty pictures!

Wow, now there's a surprise if you saw one :).

A sequel to a great series being announced like nothing, very interesting Nintendo XD!

Hope Pikmin 4 is a great game like prior ones before it and that whenever platform it comes to, people love and enjoy it :).

Thinking this will be for both. Nx and wii u due to I still believe Nx will be bc. Can't wait though more pikminnnnnnnnnn

If the NX is coming out next year, then I don't see why it won't come out on that.

Pikmin 3 is gorgeous , but I wonder how much of the low-polys/low-res textures they've ironed out by now.

All they had to do was make the gamepad a camera(which they did) but when you take photos of enemies, wildlife and plants they get added to the piklopedia.

ommmmmmggggGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG

Taking pictures in Pikmin 3 was easily one of the game's highlights. GamePad or not, they have to build upon that.

The time limit and juice limit always prevents proper exploration. I dislike the time pressure.

Just a guess, but it seems more likely to me that this would be a WiiU game aimed at the April-June window of 2016. If the NX is launching Holiday 2016, Nintendo needs to throw something into the period between January and November, and as of now all we know is coming is #FE and Pokken. They already have the resources they used to create Pikmin 3, it sounds like this has been in development for quite some time already, and they have been known to reuse resources like between Mario Galaxy I and Mario Galaxy II or Mario 3D World and Captain Toad to get similar games out on one system. Even Nintendo isn't going to go January-November 2016 with only two releases on a home system.

If the NX Console E-Shop supports Wii U games (which seems likely...they've been putting way too much effort into the WiiU E-Shop lately to throw it all away with the next console) we could see somewhat-discounted Pikmin 3 and 4 on the NX E-Shop in 2017 (say at $40 each, because this is Nintendo and they wouldn't heavily discount a game from the previous system very quickly).

Pikmin 3 was an enhanced up-port from Wii that was moved over to Wii U during development wasn 't it?

I wonder if Pikmin 4 will have some noticeable visual improvements being from the group up a Wii U title.

I just hope they go back to collecting items instead of juice. Also bring back the piklopedia. Still, 3 was a great game just those things I preferred about 2 and 1.

I don't know about improved graphics. Pikmin 3 looks pretty inline with the best looking WiiU games and has the same graphical issues a lot of WiiU games has. In photomode, it's pretty much the best looking WiiU game so far.

Glad they didn't do this. Pikmin needs to be played with Wiimote & Nunchuck. It would suck to shoehorn in Gamepad only gimmicks.

As for calls for the next one to be a 3DS game. That would be massively disappointing, as Pikmin 3 Mission Mode is the single best couch co-op game I've ever played. My eldest son and I rinsed the fuck out of it, Platinuming most stages.

Honestly I kinda saw this coming considering how Pikmin 3 ending was open. But yeah can't wait to play it and watch all my yellow Pikmin disobey me and die.

WHAT. It better be a legit sequel Nintendo. Don't stick a 4 at the end and give me a AC Home Designer-esque waste of time.
