Miyamoto: Pikmin 4 in development, "very close to completion"

Crazy fucking news! Almost competed?? Sweet! A Pikmin title built from the ground up with HD assets(assuming it's not handheld).
What how?

Miyamoto said ages ago that the series would continue after 3 so they probably started straight after 3 was done. It makes sense if you look back at pikimin 1 and 2.
They have the engine already done for pikmin 3, everything is in place so just like pikmin 2 they can spend more time on making the game have more features.

I really don't think they have built a new engine just for pikmin 4 when they already built one for 3, i know the last title had problems because of the transition from wii to wii u but i'm sure they will have ironed out those issues and i have no doubt if it launches on wii u it will be the consoles best looking title.

If it is indeed close to completition I think it definitely will be a Wii U game.
I guess a port to NX is possible but I don't think they'll bother.

If it is a NX title and the NX is a console and handheld, then I guess Motion controls are off the table. It would be amazing to play Pikmin in a handheld anyways.

Well, the NX handheld, not the 3DS. Pikmin on the 3DS would be... I don't know lol

The console NX will be compatible with the Wii remote, so that won't be a problem, Nintendo is not going to make its Wii back catalogue unplayable on its new console. I expect Pikmin 4 will offer the same variety of control schemes as 3, so a handheld version would just use the touchscreen/button controls, with pointer control on console.

Why did they wait two months to reveal this? Did Nintendo tell them to wait? And why reveal it now? Why did they even announce it at that interview? What console is it for? If it's for Wii U, why didn't they just show it at E3? Is it for NX? Then why talk about it now?

???

Surprise announcements are the best :D

Now just do the same for a new Animal Crossing that is not a minigame or a board game hybrid.

It feels like Miyamoto wasn't supposed to talk about it or something. But he let it slip and just: "Well, cats out of the bag, might as well talk about it."

I just woke up and I mean I just can't do this

He does this semi-regularly and NCL can't do shit because they aren't about to reprimand fucking Miyamoto.

He's also basically the interim CEO at this point so there technically no one at NCL who can reprimand him. Miyamoto is unleashed!

Probably was gonna be saved for a direct, but Iwata died right before/after this was censored.

I wasn't really thinking along the lines of a new engine, but more along the lines of Pikmin 4 not being hindered the way Pikmin 3 was. If I'm correct, 3 did start as a Wii title, yes? This would explain why 3 seemed to have a mix of fresh HD assets as well as old-gen assets. The game was beautiful, but I remember the ground textures looking blurry and out of place compared to everything else.

I'm thinking the game could see a release on both Wii U and NX, but we'll just have to wait and see. I do believe development is rooted in the Wii U though.

Regardless of what platform this comes to, the short timeframe suggests that they're using the same engine and probably assets. As such, it's not as if making it an NX game gives the game any substantial advantage. Business wise they might want to have it as a launch game, which I would not be opposed to.

What? Why would the NX be Wii/Wiimote compatible? Since when has Nintendo ever included two generations of backwards compatibility? If anything they would want to avoid the convoluted mess that Wii U controller support became.

Hold it for the NX.

The biggest problem with a new console is lack of games. if they hold this and have Zelda launch as a cross gen game that is two big launch games for NX.

Of course NX will be able to acknowledge Wii Remotes, otherwise a whole generation of console games can no longer be sold on the eshop as download titles. Even if NX games do not use them, the console itself will most likely be able to use it.

You mean platform, right? Given recent evidence, the NX is likely gonna be a multitude of systems rather than just one.

I agree, too big for launch. Give it to us now!

Wait you didn't do a stealth edit? I must be seeing things...
Anyway, I actually agree. But not if it means a long dry period before the launch of NX.

If NX is backwards compatible with Wii U, Wii Remote (and all the other controllers) are kind of mandatory as most of the Wii U library needs those controllers for multiplayer (Nintendo's key point this gen)

edit: Also, if they pull another gamepad-like monster for NX, (expensive, not sold at retail, etc) you bet they'll want a cheaper solution out there

If you think really hard (for you at least) about it, you will realize that your comment is irrelevant.
The NX Console kinda has to support the GameCube Adapter if Nintendo doesn't want to piss off the Smash players (unless they offer a wired variant of whatever the NX Console controller is).

NX console. we will have to wait and see what the specs the handheld version has first but the console will definitely be more powerful than the wii u.

It's just a simple USB adapter. Shouldn't be a problem for future systems at all.

I did do a edit straight after post. although the wii u will be short of games next year I think its in Nintendo's best interest to make sure they do everything to make NX successful. another console with sales like the wii u will be very bad for Nintendo and may force then further down the mobile route.

I could see Pikmin 4 being the kind of game that they'd be able to scale down for the NX Handheld. In fact, besides the mainline Pokémon games & the occasional AAA game (see Zelda & Xenoblade), I think that most of the games that Nintendo puts out will be on both.

I hope they go with an improved version of the pro controller and have the handheld NX as an option to replicate the gamepad. this would give gamers who want the second screen a option to have it and keep the console price down so they can sell them at an affordable price.

Just read this on IGN. I am so excited about this. I guess they figured they already had the assets in place after Pikmin 3 so why not make another game.

very true. though I expect Nintendo will make separate games for the handheld using the same code and assets. this way games are quicker, cheaper and easier to make but they don't lose revenue from gamers only buying one version if it was the same game.

Yeah, this is what I think they're gonna do. Instead of a NSMB2 and a NSMBU, use the same assets, make different versions. Expand on the Smash idea.
Actually I was thinking of more how the patent described the shared software thing as. The exact same game, but the assets for both the Console & Handheld versions are in the game. So if you play Pikmin 4 on the NX Console, you'll gain access to the 1080p assets. Same for the NX Handheld, where you'll gain access to the 540p/720p/whatever-the-NX-Handheld's-resolution-is assets. This would also explain why Nintendo wants to do away with the disc drive, likely going with either cartridges or digital-only instead to account for the handheld.

Wonder why no Pikmin game has made it to the 3DS.
The 3DS can't handle the Ice Climbers in Smash 4 & have to run 3 Pikmin at half the framerate. I doubt that it could handle Pikmin 4. Doesn't matter anyway, the 3DS is on its last legs.

I'm really out of the loop tho

Oh yeah, that's a good point, didn't think of that.

Guize, what if Miyamoto also talked about Zelda U on that interview and is under embargo and one of this days a random article will appear: "Oh here's a lenghty Zelda U trailer"

wooooooooooooooop wooooooooop

What a strange way to break news. I wonder what's going to be unique about Pikmin 4? Is it a filler title for the WiiU as it inevitably winds down in 2016? an NX game?

I think Pikmin could explore a new genre but that probably won't happen with 4.

We already have Pokkén Tournament likely serving as the last summer game for the Wii U & SMTxFE being the Wii U's Early 2016 title in the West. You still have to account for Japan, so maybe Pikmin 4 will fill that void. This is assuming that Nintendo doesn't save Pikmin 4 for the NX Platform.
