Miyamoto: Pikmin 4 in development, "very close to completion"

I think it's a Wii U game (assets & engine ready) intended for 2016 (so not present at E3 2015) and a sign - imo - the Wii U will still be the Nintendo home console next year (no NX home console in 2016). Expect a PG game with the Bayo 2 engine (or W101 engine), a Lego Ciy 2, a Meme Run 2 ;]

Come on Nintendo, Pikmin 4, Zelda U, and SM3DW2, all in 2016, with NX for 2017

Let the Wii U go out in a blaze of glory

If Pikmin 4 can be made cheaply because they already have the assets from Pikmin 3, is SM3DW2 really that much of a long shot?

Speculation time!

Pikmin NX:
PRO:
a beloved franchise (even if not huge in terms of selling power, it's not neihter that small at all), that could probably recycle some assets from the previous installment and still being/looking fresh and good (especially if NX will be a portable).
CONS:
it would be strange to see Nintendo talk about a game for an unannounced platform, and it's not a HUGE name to bring new consumer in

Pikmin Wii U:
PRO:
It would probably be the better choice in terms of effort to be spent and consumer satisfaction. It could well recycle almost all the assets of the third game, it would be coherent with Nintendo sentences and facts about the Wii U (more smaller games, more assets recycle, and so on)
CONS: Wii U is dead and a sequel of an alredy released game would probably bomb hard

Pikmin 3DS
PRO:
it would be perfectly coherent with Myiamoto ideas of having it portable, touch-based
CONS: Myiamoto also said that the 3DS (screen/power) wasn't enough for his Pikmin vision

All this would lead into two logical possibilities:
New 3DS exclusive or mobile game.

NX launch title?

Almost certainly.

Hopefully after all these years saying they've learned the lesson, they finally have a proper slate of games ready for their next launch window. The software droughts did more damage to the Wii U than anything else. You can't expect people to go 9 months waiting for quality software.

Out of fucking nowhere.

Pikmin 3 development was officially announced in one round table at the E3, but this coming directly from an interview made in July that gets this part published right now in Eurogamer it's really weird.

Nabbit game using the 3DW engine. Or 3DW2 as oni-link wants. Or Nabbit game within 3DW2, a la Captain Toad levels.

If it really is close to being finished, have to imagine its a Wii U title, at least at first.

Great news

NX launch title?
Most likely, for a number of reasons...
  • The NX Console could use a game that could flex its muscles graphically, & I'm not sure if a port of a Wii U game (the new Zelda) would do that.
  • Miyamoto always wanted to put Pikmin on a handheld, so it on a NX Handheld makes sense.
  • The NX Platform overall needs great games at launch.

If it is coming to Wii U then it would have to hit NX as well, they'd be throwing money away releasing a big franchise title exclusively on a dead platform.

On the bright side, the fact they're they're referring to it as Pikmim 4 means it's less likely to be a spinoff or major shakeup in terms of the gameplay mechanics.

Yop your right, if its call Pikmin 4, should remain as we use to play.

Miyamoto's mention of Pikmin 4 from November 2014:

“Continually launching campaigns after the release of software will lay the groundwork for the next iteration of “Pikmin” in the future. And needless to say, we want it to be one of the motivations for potential consumers to purchase Wii U. We are making a variety of different efforts.”

and January 2015:

I still have a lot of ideas about what I want to do with Pikmin, but nothing’s decided yet. But of course, we will continue to make Pikmin games.”

It sounds like Pikmin 4 is perhaps a Wii U title after all.

There was an interview I think either late 2014 or early 2015 Miyamoto was being coy about Pikmin 4 happening, i'll see if I can dig it up later.

QA

If I am allowed to do a little bit of PR here, we released a series of short films called “Pikmin Short Movies” on October 25 at the Tokyo International Film Festival. If you have not seen it yet, I hope you will check out the information on the Internet. The short film is only about 20 minutes, but this is our very first animated movie that uses “Pikmin” as its theme. We’re planning to make this 3D movie available on Nintendo 3DS and make the HD version of the movie available on Wii U in the near future. At the same time, we have also prepared a demo version of “Pikmin 3” so anyone who hasn’t played Pikmin can experience its unique joy. Continually launching campaigns after the release of software will lay the groundwork for the next iteration of “Pikmin” in the future. And needless to say, we want it to be one of the motivations for potential consumers to purchase Wii U. We are making a variety of different efforts.

The fuck? Why would they just announce it like this? And it doesn't seem like he's talking about a spinoff either.

It'll have to launch with whatever the NX is right? What would be the point of making another Pikmin for the Wii U? Unless they were able to get it made relatively fast and easy because there was already a game to build upon.

Hmm...

Weeeird announcement.

This has got to be for the NX (or at least for the NX and the Wii U), or else they would have shown it at E3.

Awesome news, even if I've never gotten into the series.
Even though it would be a great fit for Wii U with the controls, I don't mind them building up a library of games to throw at us for when NX launches.
Pikmin on 3DS seems .. unlikely. Even with the N3DS power.. That screen resolution holds it back greatly for a game like this.

This quote:

“Continually launching campaigns after the release of software will lay the groundwork for the next iteration of “Pikmin” in the future."

makes me thanks for the Pikmin DLC maps and give me hope also for continuos contents also for MK, Smash and maybe even other Nintendo series.

Uff, this seems strange! Completely out of nowhere! It also seems like Nintendo is holding off regarding directs, probably out of respect for Iwata? :'-(

I really enjoyed Pikmin 3 (got it for free with the Mario Kart 8 promo) but I can't say that I was really waiting for a sequel on the WiiU. I hope it's gonna be a game worthy of continuing the series and not just some spin-offy thing :-/
