Miyamoto: Pikmin 4 in development, "very close to completion"

If Miyamoto was only saying in January that nothing is set in stone and then said in July that it's close to being done, it makes me think that they're going to reuse some of the assets from Pikmin 3 and it could possibly be a Wii U title, if not cross-gen.

I wouldn't mind seeing this game on NX or mobile, but I don't believe it's a Wii U or 3DS game unless it goes in a side story/spin off direction which I wouldn't want.

3 has had mild success on Wii U, but didn't sell as well as even there newest franchise Splatoon. To get more people interested in this game series Nintendo already released the Pikmin shorts cartoons which my son and I adored. My son's first experience with the Pikmin series was the Nintendo Land game. The touch controls made it a fun, abbreviated experience, but it was still not quite traditional Pikmin.

I enjoyed the addition of touch controls added to 3 and I could see Nintendo coming up with a version for mobile that adds multi touch controls to an ios or Android version. I am sure some people would grumble at the thought of Pikmin on mobile, but I for one would welcome it, and would love to see what Nintendo could come up with on modern smart phone tech.

Man, this can't be happening, after pikmin 3 didn't come during the Wii gen I wasn't expecting 4 anytime soon. Much less "close to completion". HYPE!

Uff, this seems strange! Completely out of nowhere! It also seems like Nintendo is holding off regarding directs, probably out of respect for Iwata? :'-(

I really enjoyed Pikmin 3 (got it for free with the Mario Kart 8 promo) but I can't say that I was really waiting for a sequel on the WiiU. I hope it's gonna be a game worthy of continuing the series and not just some spin-offy thing :-/

Given that he's calling it Pikmin 4, I wouldn't worry too much about it being a spin-off. :)

I'm just not a fan of RTS games in general. I own Pikmin and Pikmin 3 as well as Nintendo Land.

My wife likes them though.

Oh, gotcha. Yeah, I'm not typically into RTS games myself, but I was pretty astounded how much we liked the Nintendo Land attraction, and then Pikmin 3 itself. Especially as someone who couldn't get into the original game at all.

so weird. We waited how long for Pikmin 3 and now there is already a Pikmin 4? Or will this end up being one of their completed games they never release, or it will be quitly "delayed" and never release for years.

I loved Pikmin 3 but not sure I want 4 so soon.

There was a series of interviews Miyamoto did with some Youtube gaming sites last year. During one of them, he did mention he had new ideas for Pikmin and that he wanted it to be on Wii U. Plans could change obviously, but it seems the original intent was for the game to be on Wii U.

Am I really the only one that remembers that miyamoto said they were working on pikmin 4 last year when they released those CGi videos on the eshop?

That is amazing. Was this Source or an actual animation from the game with text overlaid?

Either way, thanks Iwata. I know this is your first of many gifts to us on the other side <3 God, what a wonderful way to wake up on a Monday. Stat holiday, and my favourite franchise is still alive and well

This is what happens when we don't have Chris Remo on the scene anymore to give us some of that hot Pikmin info early.

Kensuke Tanabe at E3: "We've not even started a new Metroid LOL, even if we start now it will take YEARS"

Miyamoto 3 months later: "Pikmin? We shit those out for fun, next ones nearly done"

I like Pikmin but fuck Nintendo's priorities.

WTF was not this announced during their terrible E3 Direct? This game would have made it a whole lot better :/

Awesome, totally down. Loved the third one so I'm ready for more soon.

Very weird that they sat on this interview since July, very weird indeed. Might point to some uncertainty in the company on what to do with Directs now.

Hope the engine was developed from ground-up for WiiU o.O
Pikmin already looked soooo good and that was an enhanced Wii port *_*

I doubt it, with how long it took for pikmin 3 (8 years), it wouldn't make sense for this one to pop out after three years with a new engine. I wish though

Seems to me like this must be one of those cases where Nintendo's always got teams experimenting internally and the Pikmin guys just stumbled onto something that let them do a fourth game very quickly.

If I had to guess, this is probably a Super Mario Galaxy 2 sort of situation where it's going to feel like an extension of the previous game but with more refined level design and a few new mechanics. And then throw in Amiibo support, since Olimar's got one of those.
So like Pikmin 2! And omg, imagine the amiibo.
