Fair enough Zulux, I'm also wondering how the Royals are going to keep a lot of key players on their roster next year. I mean yeah Shields comes off the books but they are going to have to make a choice if they want to put some money down for real next year.
This really was their best chance to pull this off.
agreed
Shields is an imposter
if anything the title "big game" belongs to madbum

lakers are on a downward spiral and the niners haven't won anything since the mid 90's.
nope. all i see are underacheivers
you say it yourself...
that is the exact reason why it ISN'T a bad contract.
could he have gotten more money waiting another season. Most likely. But when he signed that he likely wasn't thinking... "man, if I do well in the world series this year I could get a lot more money."
He signed an at worst, slightly below market contract for a player of his skill and time played... a contract that meant even if his arm fell off he would be set for life. You say only 3.5 million, but I could easily retire with that amount of money and never have money issues again as I currently excluding my student loans would live off around 30k a year (meaning a million would easily last me 30 years so 3.5 would last me 105 years assuming I can put it in an account that at least matches the rate of inflation)
In no way was what he signed bad for him or his team, it's the going rate for a future star player right now. They get set for life, the team manages to sign what looks to be a future star for below market cost in hopes that they don't fall apart. If the player performs to expectations it was a really good contract for the team/ a low paying one for the player. And if they don't then it's a really good contract for the player/ a bad one for the team.
Yes in hindsight it looks like he could have done better... but at the same time two starts into the season he could have been a TJ victim and missed out on the many millions he is getting now. There is no chance at all he regrets the contract he signed unless he is one of the most shallow people in the world, which I doubt because if he was one of the most shallow people in the world the giants likely wouldn't have a WS title right now as he likely wouldn't have made himself available as he would not want to hurt himself by pitching on short rest.
I am legit shocked they are having the parade on Halloween. That just seems like asking for trouble; not necc. due to the parade itself, but the fact that these type of things turn into de facto all-day holidays anyway with people getting completely off their face drunk or with a blaze haze that'd put Karl the Fog to shame. Throw in a day that encourages people to dress up and the things people think they can get away with while in costume and you've got something like Pride + Bay 2 Breakers + 4/20 all rolled upinto one.(you like that?)
Hope the excitement takes it easy on your neighborhood then, GAFer. I'm down for car horns and fireworks, but man if there isn't always a bunch of morons looking to use it as an excuse to just destroy things :\
The 2012 parade was on Halloween, too, but that was on a Wednesday. I say why not? People are going to be out and celebrating anyways so get the team out there with the fans.

I was sort of hoping Yost would put in Gore to pinch-run at the end there and go "Fuck it, steal home!"
Once Selig is out and the CBA ends on Dec.1 2016, everything fucking changes. Get ready for some NFL parity cause shit is gonna change in two years. The salary cap is coming.
Agreed.
Salaries alone aren't necessarily an indicator of success. Last season 3 of the 5 lowest teams in terms of salary spent made the playoffs. The 2 that didn't make it were in obvious teardown/rebuilding mode (Astros, Marlins). 4 of the lowest 10 overall made the playoffs last season, and only 3 of the top 10.
Other stats:
* 16 of 30 teams have won at least one World Series in the past 25 years.
* 24 of the 30 teams have played in one of those World Series.
* 28 of the 30 teams have made the postseason since 2001.
Many of those teams get a ton of revenue, so they're still making money despite the high payrolls.
MLB: 10 different champions since '95
NFL: 14 different champions in the same timeframe
NBA: 8 different champions in the same timeframe
Baseball's WS results are dictated by the fact that the playoff format favors having 2 or 3 elite starters that can overcome lineup imbalances. Luckily, the arbitration years allow lower payroll teams like the A's or Rays to take advantage of their younger players for half their prime years.
NFL's volatility is dictated by salary caps constraining team's resources - the moment you get a good, young team together - the clock starts ticking for the next 2-3 seasons where you won't be able to keep your players.
NBA's a little easier to maintain dominance - as the Bulls, Spurs, Lakers, and now Heat have shown. It's a 5-on-5 game, so having two elite stars in their prime will let you run the league for a while.
The above numbers can now be updated to reflect the Royals making it to the WS.* 28 of the 30 teams have made the postseason since 2001.
This argument again? MLB has had a lot more parity than people may realize, no worse really than the other major sports.

I didn't hear you complaining when The Astros were turning a profit while fielding a shitty ass product on the field. Or how about The Miami Marlins and the scam they pulled on the tax payers of Miami-Date County?Doesn't change that the salary cap is coming, small market team owners aren't going to deal with it anymore.

edit: also no one's posted in that salary thread in over half a year.

I can't speak much about the Astros. The Miami-Dade county stadium fiasco was a power play move made by Loria, he's done the same shit since he schemed to control the Expos and screw them over with the help of Selig.
You can't compare teams that are intentionally ran into the ground and held onto merely as business opportunities to teams that are ran well with the intention of winning but just simply don't have the money.
Take the Brewers for example, they are a team that has a great farm system and tries to stay in the mix postseason but they never have what it takes to make it over the hump. They just don't have the money.
This all The Dodgers' fault.
Phillies' fan? Sucks to suck bro!Damn, Royals. So close. I'm still bummed about 2009.

KC peeps, I just politely told my boss to stuff it today and I'm going to head to the K at like 10:30. Hopefully it will be cathartic. If anyone else is going to be there and wants to do a meetup, send me a PM or post here.
seriously.... don't taint Bumbgarner with such a pathetic title....
at the very least he deserves
