Also Bumgarner is probably kicking himself for signing that extension at the beginning of the season. WORST AGENT EVER....

I have two world series rings and will be making nearly 7 million next season.. WOE IS ME...

yeah I doubt he has that thought at all :P

His contract vs his experience is quite fair and at that age even assuming he is an ace for the next few years. you take the money hands down as you are set for life with that as long as you aren't stupid with your money... you can worry about filling a swimming pool with money with your next contract.

I mean it's quite comparable to Chris Sale, who is arguably a better overall pitcher. (Bumgarner has a much better post season showing though :P)

You know, I have nothing against the Giants per say, but I was really surprised how much my heart sank when Sandoval caught that popup. I was really behind the Royals this year. As a Twins fan, they've always been my favorite division rival.

I have some things against the giants (mostly their franchise not cracking down on one of the biggest cheaters out there, but alas I can't fault them to much for that and it's not like they managed to do anything but put fans in seats with him... they have no titles for that cheat to show), but there are worse NL teams that could have won it.

I was really rooting for the royals myself. As I mentioned before I have feared them for years, it's nice to finally have other people see why they have been a team I have been afraid of now that they finally put it together. I do wonder if they will be putting most of the extra revenue back into the team this off season to try again next year... I am trying to remember how many free agents they have that are notable... I think it might just be butler (a guy that over the course of the season actually was worse then a replacement player) and shields (which you can trade for a single replacement starter) so they could easily be a threat to be there again next year.

So my coworker says he's an Oakland A's fan, but he was wholeheartedly rooting for the Giants. Not just in a anyone-but-the-Royals way either, but genuinely cheering for SF.

I called him out on this, but he claims it's Bay Area solidarity, saying that here in San Jose, it's neutral ground, so you can root for both.

I find this highly blasphemous. I'm new to the Bay, and I don't know much A's fans, but this isn't normal right?

I'm not from the bay area (I'm from actual Northern California), but I root for both teams, with a preference towards the giants.

However, the raiders aren't afforded that, fuck'em, it's 49ers all the way

not at all...

I'd have pulled for the Oakland team. Not over the SF teams, but over everyone else for sure.

Casual fans often cheer for both. The hardcore fans focus on one team and, at best, tolerate/respect the other team but more than often they can't stand each other.

You can pretty much find the same sort of thing in any other major metro area that has multiple teams.

California is California. It's always good when our sport teams win because it pisses the rest of the US off. I mean we are the best state already for good looking people, food, weather, and we have good sports teams? Haters gonna hate.

Baseball is dead to me.

I don't even want to go into work tomorrow with all the bandwagon Giants fans who can name maybe three players...

Reminds me of when the Saints won the Super Bowl. Seems like a lifetime ago already. Nothing like "man, when that guy got the interception off Payton" from two different people at the water cooler

I met many As fans that hate the giants and some that cheer for us when they get out of it. If it was the opposite I would be rooting for the As to win but wouldnt consider myself a fan or anything.

And to complete the picture, you're a Yankees fan. My mind boggles.

Mmmm, I don't think it's that unusual. Oakland and SF are pretty close to each other. *shrug*

Now, if it was rooting for the Dodgers... fucking forget it. That shit doesn't fly.

I'm loyal to the Giants through and through, but I always keep tabs on the A's during baseball season.

Had they made it and we didn't, I'd have cheered on the A's as they too were playing great during the season.

The last two guaranteed years of his contract are decent, and while 7 million sounds a lot let's not forget he plays in California which has a state income tax which get's quite ridiculous the more money you make. It's around 51% for people who earn over a million with state and federal combined. As far as I know the payroll system works differently as other professional sports where you get paid twice a month and don't receive tax benefits from playing in different states.

So even though it's 7 million on paper, he's probably only earning around 3.5, factor that in with the longevity of pitchers these days and it's a bad contract. Especially with the team option on those last two non guaranteed years and if he gets hurt before that.

It's extremely normal. Back in the day, the South Bay used to be A's franchise territory, but they gave it up so SFG could build the AT&T ballpark. Now they want it back and there's been a significant effort to move the A's here in San Jose. There's a lot of A's fans and Giants fans here for that reason. I come from a family where my Dad's side was about the A's, and my Mom's side was about the Giants.

Also, KC beat the A's in the ALWC so there's some animosity from A's fans there. Personally I'm an A's fan but I'll root for the Giants as I've been to plenty of both teams' games.

I came here to post this:

Ha thanks for the insight, guys.

I was just going by experience. I'm a lapsed Angels fan, but I remember in 2002 Dodgers fans would rather pretend the Series was cancelled that year than openly & enthusiastically root for the Angels. (They still did so begrudgingly though).

Most consecutive scoreless relief appearances in postseason history:

1. Rivera, Yankess 1998-2000 - 23
2. Affeldt, Giants 2010-2014 - 22 (highest by a lefty) - streak still active
3t. Casilla, Giants 2012-2014 - 19 - streak still active
3t. Bradford, Athletics 2000-2008 - 19
3t. Cook, Mets 1996-2000 - 19

He's kinda right I think in that San Jose is neutral. Since I've been living in San Jose I see A's and Giants fans in seemingly equal numbers. But cheering for both is a little weird.

you say it yourself...
factor that in with the longevity of pitchers these days
that is the exact reason why it ISN'T a bad contract.
could he have gotten more money waiting another season. Most likely. But when he signed that he likely wasn't thinking... "man, if I do well in the world series this year I could get a lot more money."

He signed an at worst, slightly below market contract for a player of his skill and time played... a contract that meant even if his arm fell off he would be set for life. You say only 3.5 million, but I could easily retire with that amount of money and never have money issues again as I currently excluding my student loans would live off around 30k a year (meaning a million would easily last me 30 years so 3.5 would last me 105 years assuming I can put it in an account that at least matches the rate of inflation)

In no way was what he signed bad for him or his team, it's the going rate for a future star player right now. They get set for life, the team manages to sign what looks to be a future star for below market cost in hopes that they don't fall apart. If the player performs to expectations it was a really good contract for the team/ a low paying one for the player. And if they don't then it's a really good contract for the player/ a bad one for the team.

Yes in hindsight it looks like he could have done better... but at the same time two starts into the season he could have been a TJ victim and missed out on the many millions he is getting now. There is no chance at all he regrets the contract he signed unless he is one of the most shallow people in the world, which I doubt because if he was one of the most shallow people in the world the giants likely wouldn't have a WS title right now as he likely wouldn't have made himself available as he would not want to hurt himself by pitching on short rest.

They've kept the burning of things to the Mission it seems. This makes me happy. The TL can handle drunken masses, but we fear fire.

Lol @ the drone flying above the crowd burning things. I'm sure we'll also have no shortage of GoPro-strapped revelers uploading clips soon.

Fair enough Zulux, I'm also wondering how the Royals are going to keep a lot of key players on their roster next year. I mean yeah Shields comes off the books but they are going to have to make a choice if they want to put some money down for real next year.

This really was their best chance to pull this off.

I'm pretty far south along mission and all I know is that the sound or car horns hasn't let up yet. And fireworks are still going.

I am legit shocked they are having the parade on Halloween. That just seems like asking for trouble; not necc. due to the parade itself, but the fact that these type of things turn into de facto all-day holidays anyway with people getting completely off their face drunk or with a blaze haze that'd put Karl the Fog to shame. Throw in a day that encourages people to dress up and the things people think they can get away with while in costume and you've got something like Pride + Bay 2 Breakers + 4/20 all rolled up
(you like that?)
into one.

I'm pretty far south along mission and all I know is that the sound or car horns hasn't let up yet. And fireworks are still going.

Hope the excitement takes it easy on your neighborhood then, GAFer. I'm down for car horns and fireworks, but man if there isn't always a bunch of morons looking to use it as an excuse to just destroy things :\
