Modern Warfare Remaster requires Infinity Warfare disc to play

To be expected, kind of like ODST and Halo beta. But it's annoying, what if I want to play FF15 disc then quickly play some MW Remaster? Gotta put in an IW disc...

It sucks, not just because you can't sell IW, but just for convenience...

At this point I will wait for MW Remaster to be sold separately.

Why a MW2 Remastered? It has a great visual. I think more coherent a WaW remastered for exemple.

This sucks. They're just keeping the base smaller by tying this game to the higher tiered sku.

Release this shit separately to maximize the user base u bastards.

I really dont want IW at all. Just cod4.

Ill have to wait and hope for the standalone release after the holidays.

Well it's a shame since the FAQ said this before and then changed to say the opposite, but not unexpected. For once though the "pre-order cancelled" meme will not just be a meme for a lot of people, including me.

This was obvious.

I can't wait for this cod4 thing go away and leave cod with people that are actually currently following the franchise.

And yes, at some point it will be sold separately.

My only problem is that this will kind of force you to have at least a bit of IW installed, since when you put a disc into the PS4 it automatically starts installing the game.

Seems fairly obvious really. Otherwise you could just buy Infinite Warfare, download COD4, then immediately trade the game in. What did you expect?
This. Don't understand why so many people seemed to be expecting otherwise. Seems fairly obvious.

Word. Cod 4 is readily playable on PC right now with tons of people online and could probs run on a toaster.
But hey, it's helping to fund the current games so I can't really complain too much.

People that are defending this crap, are you telling me your ok with every publisher locking their remasters behind the new version of the game?

Eh, it sounds like something standard. This has less to do with forcing you to buy IW, and more with making sure you didn't get the game for free by borrowing the disk.

I'm not, but that's entirely different subject.

There's a difference between defending and understanding why they did it. There isn't many people defending it just people acknowleding why they did it.

Considering CoD is an annual franchise, this method was probably the only way Activision felt comfortable greenlighting a remaster. They have no real incentive to do so otherwise.

It's completely understandable why they handled it this way. The remaster is probably going to be available separately sometime next year anyway.

COD IW is gonna sell more then just about every game that comes out this year, selling MWR stand alone is not gonna hurt it at all. Which is why its dumb to lock the game behind IW.

They will make way more money selling both stand alone, which is why it doesnt make any sense to lock the game behind IW

The Legacy Edition that includes MW is $80. They'll sell far more by doing it this way. Many who would have never purchased IW will now spend $80 instead of the $40 or $50 MW would have been priced at separately.

Sigh :(, please don't let this be a new trend with devs now, once one Dev starts something it always seems to cause a chain reaction in some way.

I'm sure activisions accountants have done the math more so than you have. They will clean up with everyone buying IW/remaster for the holidays. Then maybe release it stand alone some time next year and make even more money.

Maybe I'm wrong, but this thread is not about selling the games separately. We established that the two games can only be bought together in one package, so we're discussing whether it's ok to allow downloading and playing CoD 4 remaster to be played without the disk.

Yes

That way maybe this "remasters" trend of creative bankrupcy can go away.

Oh yay bring on Black Ops 7 no boots will touch the ground edition.

MWR is needed because people want the franchise to go back to it roots yes I would like a fresh approach but I'll take what I can get at this point.

Sure, but I can't think of a single "package" that has more than one disc. If it fills out the Bluray it typically turns into a content download.

Thank you. I wasn't sure if anything had been released this way this generation.

Bioshock collection also comes on 2 blu ray disks.

A lot of self important entitled folks whining as if they have a right to have things their way. Obviously this was expected and most sensible people saw this from a mile off. Still purchasing as IW's campaign looks interesting.

Ummm.. why wouldn't it? That seems incredibly obvious, for the plastic disc obsessed among us.

How else would they know you bought the game and didn't just borrow a disc?

I don't honestly believe any of you thought the opposite.

Uh... A code in the box obviously.

Anyway, lol Activision guess I'm not getting the Legacy edition of Infinite Warfare and selling it

Dammit

It's unreasonable because it's still a digital copy, that it's linked to a disc. It's basically the return of the online pass, because used copies of IW won't have the Modern Warfare Remastered, and the original owner won't be able to play it either.

I have Destiny on digital and bought the disc for 20 bucks on January, it was sealed and had the codes, got the expansions and then sold the disc for 10.

Difference is, that's an expansion, CODMWR is a complete game separate from IW but tied to that game so we can't sell or trade the new entry.

The IW disc being required to play MWR doesn't really surprise me, given it's Activision we're talking about here. But MWR not coming on the disc itself sounds pretty lame. Unless you're buying the game digitally, both games should be available on the disc IMO. Having MWR require a separate download code sounds like a really contrived way to force people to play/access the game as they see fit. As someone mentioned a while back, its virtually akin to last generation's notorious online passes.

Put me in the waiting group for either a separate release or highly discounted IW. If neither happen or happen timely I'll just let it go.

Preach - although after last year's nonsensical Black Ops 3 SP campaign this was a given. I'll wait a year or two for the separate MWR download.

Same, I don't want to support this even though it is one of my favorite games. If they don't get the sales they want they will release it separately.

So if the series has to go back to its roots, then it's a CoD remake we need, you know, the WW2 games (aka Medal of Honor 7)

People that are defending this crap, are you telling me your ok with every publisher locking their remasters behind the new version of the game?

I think Call of Duty is kind of a unique case.

Most remasters aren't for annualized franchises, and most remasters don't have multiplayer. COD is also a uniquely big franchise in console games. The whole COD business model is built on having one game suck up all the air in the room for 12 months. That doesn't really leave any room for a remaster or in this case a full remake of a previous game, much less one that has its own multiplayer service to keep up.

This is the same reason EA doesn't do remasters: it's not that conducive to the games-as-a-service model. That model depends on customers constantly moving to the next game which is usually some kind of continual living service. Remasters are more conducive to the old hit-driven way of game development where each game is a singular story, like a movie being remastered on Blu-Ray. Remasters only work into the games-as-a-service model if you make the remaster a thing attached to the service. In fact, this is analogous to the only times in the past EA has done remasters: when it packaged an HD version of Medal of Honor Frontline with the 2010 game, and when it packaged an HD version of Dead Space Extraction with the PS3 version of Dead Space 2. Both were eventually released on their own. Modern Warfare Remastered is simply being rolled into the overall COD service. I wouldn't be surprised if a Mass Effect trilogy remaster was somehow attached to Andromeda.

The other elephant in the room is that in the eyes of many people, no COD game released in the last nine years is indisputably better than COD4. For a lot of people a new version of COD4 is probably the ideal COD game they could just keep playing forever. That's why in my previous post in this thread I compared it to how Valve has handled Team Fortress 2 which was released around the same time.

Activision's mistake is that it is trying to do games-as-a-service and the hit-driven model at the same time. It's only allowed to do it because of COD's immense popularity.

It would certainly be a separate disc. IW is probably already taking up all or almost all of that Blu-Ray, and so far no publisher has dropped the money to manufacture a 2-Blu-Ray game. It's the same reason physical copies of Master Chief Collection require 20gigs of patches -- the multiplayer takes up so much data it really should have had its own disc.

Should be noted that the FAQ page for Modern Warfare: Remastered has been further updated, officially confirming it rather than just the small legal tidbit.

PlayStation 4 – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is a full game digital download that will be included in the Infinite Warfare Legacy Edition and Legacy Pro Edition on PlayStation 4. The digital download is redeemed via a voucher code on an insert in the box. The Infinite Warfare game disc must be inserted to play Modern Warfare Remastered. Internet connection is required.
Xbox One – Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered is included on the Infinite Warfare Xbox One disc (no voucher code required) in the Legacy Edition and Legacy Pro Edition of Infinite Warfare. Before Modern Warfare Remastered can be played, an additional download is required. The game disc must be inserted to play Modern Warfare Remastered. Internet connection is required.
Steam – A Steam key will be provided in the Legacy Edition of Infinite Warfare that will provide access to both Infinite Warfare and Modern Warfare Remastered. Internet connection is required.

Interesting. The Xbox One version DOES contain MWR on the disc but not the PS4 version.

Also, you DO need Infinite Warfare installed to play the digital version of MWR, even if you own IW digital. Now that is a step too far in my opinion. That's pretty bullshit.

Thats odd, wonder why?

The entitlement in this post is disgusting. Your desire to purchase the game is born out of a pure selfish desire and you expect activision to put your interests ahead of theirs? What a horrible double standard. This was expected and if you didn't expect it, then you managed to delude yourself.
