Monster Hunter Online (Capcom/Tencent, CryEngine 3) officially announced

Wasn't there already a terrible 360 game called Monster Hunter Online?

It could be good I guess. I'm enjoying MH3U so uh, yay? It will likely be F2P I assume, so let's see if they go the cosmetic route or if they do something ridiculous.

I prefer the art direction of MH4, but a combination of that art direction and this graphical fidelity would be something I'd look forward to.

That said, for some reason MH is a handheld franchise to me even if it started on consoles. I bought a Wii U for MH3U and ended up spending much more time with the 3DS version.

Listening to the Monster Hunter 8-4 podcast and their talk of the Frontier game leads me to believe that the grind in this game will be crazy as hell XD, I don't wanna go near an MMO lol, I will stick with the main series =P

Edit: Though those wanting a "true HD" Monster Hunter can now stop complaining

Tencent partly owns Epic, why didn't they license their own tech?

My impression is that Cryengine 3 renders large, outdoor scenes better than UE3. Also developers opt for UE3 because it's very multiplatform development friendly, this game probably will only be released on PC.

I hope it has a good story line, like explaining that this Monster Hunter world is actually a settlement from Earth by humans that have lost most technology though they don't realize they are all part nano-machine and that explains how the fuck they can withstand such beatings by giant beasts.

*sips kool-aid*

CE 3 is very multiplatform friendly, just not current-gen friendly.

Graphically speaking trailer doesnt look good to me. I can understand cuts in effects and geometry MMO, but those textures are too low-res.

Japanese IP outsourced to a Chienese developer and publisher build with German Tech?
Im ok with this.

A bunch of Asian studios are working with CE3, maybe they had a very good tech support for the region?

I want nothing more than a nice-looking PC monster hunter, but I don't play MH for the graphics so I don't think I'd settle for something that screws with the existing formula. And Frontier is lame, so I have no confidence in a game that sounds like it's trying to be Frontier 2.

I mean, 24 man hunt? Talk about missing the point.

I don't know, I personally think it looks pretty awful despite the HD graphics, the trailer looked boring as fuck and this is made by Tencent. I expect this to be Chinese only and be really janky.

What's the split on that? 4.5 + 0.5?

First week/last known total:

[PSP] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd - 1.950717 / 4.532557
[PSP] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd (PSP The Best) - 14.924 / 317.793

[PS3] Monster Hunter Portable 3rd HD Ver. - 287.829 / 434.214

Monster hunter just doesn't pull big enough numbers to justify reworking the assets.

I think what you want to say here is it doesn't pull big enough numbers on a console. It's all opportunity cost, because why would a business invest that money in a product that is going to cost more and make them less money when they can make a game for less that brings in more on a handheld.

Loooot of kneejerk "this will be bad" reactions in this thread from MonHun fans. Stockholm Syndrome?

Will wait for more in depth looks at combat flow between players and monsters and the weight of animations, but if Capcom wants some of my money at least, this being on PC means I can convince my usual online game playing buddies to give it a go after PSO2 greatly underwhelmed us. I also hope it nicks the new staff weapon from 4 because that looks fun. Thieve, Tencent, thiiiieve!

Of course it'll remain in China forever and MH4U trailer will wield the ever ironic "INCREDIBLE HD VISUALS" tagline.

I'm really not sure how to feel about this. One one hand it looks incredible and exactly the kind of bump visually that I would've expected out of the series by now and the other hand I'm not particularly sure why they felt it was necessary to outsource the title for yet another MMO that may or may not be localized. Maybe they're making their way across the globe and by the time the it stops at NA shores Spark Unlimited will be at the helm.

This MH will most likely be the first one with an open world level structure, I wonder how they're going to rebalance the gameplay to cope with that.

That looks like Monster Hunter Gary's mod to me. Like its an in engine trailer. The tail cut part just looked bad. But hey, look at all those graphics, right? Woo!

Terrible art, almost offensive.

Yeah, that's my biggest reason for going "huh?" at people saying this looks great; the art is absolutely ghastly, to the point where I'd freely compare it to Perfect Dark Zero. There's obviously a huge tech upgrade from what we've seen in the mainline titles, but the guys making this have no clue as to how to show it off in an aesthetically pleasing way. It's rather grotesque, to be frank.

Jeezus! Portable 3rd was a freakin monster.

The animation doesn't look so great. It looks like they tried to copy the animations, but didn't get the same exaggerated style.

$100 says the real MH team wants nothing to do with this, just like Frontier.

I was not aware of this. That's interesting. Why do they feel that way?

God...why can't Capcom get this shit right? You're over there and have some exposure to it maybe? Why is bringing a Monster Hunter game to an HD console or PC like asking Capcom to cure cancer?

Trailer was a total snoozer IMO. Everyone gets so excited by tech but the art design is bland, the environments look like MH2, the music was bad and the trailer was poorly cut. This looks like Capcom in name only - $100 says the real MH team wants nothing to do with this, just like Frontier.

2nd generation Monster Hunter had the best overall look. Third gen, aside from the monster in the room known as Portable Third, introduced the muddy and/or ugly shadow look.

I see the exact opposite, people generally being enthusiastic but reaching that conclusion after having watched the trailer.
Yeah, animation/combat looks jank, there really should be no getting around that no matter how much one might hate Nintendo hardware. Pie seemingly still found a way though.

I think the environments look pretty nice, monster/hunter assets really don't look like too much of a leap over Tri but that might be due to quantity (24 hunters?!) and the seamless overworld. Will be curious to see if this gets Japanese release (nevermind western) and possibly a console port.

Probably to keep costs down is one reason. They did cancel MH3 on PS3 to move it to Wii after all. The core audience for these games don't really care about it being on consoles and even less about HD graphics. They just want to get together and play, or play something on their commute.

I dunno, the game looked "ok". I'll give it a shot when (if) it comes out here in the West.

The trailer makes me feel kind of stupid though, the one part where the Greatsword user runs and block a fireball aimed at the Bowgunner? Now I am suddenly aware that we can be human shields in Monster Hunter. It feels bad knowing that I COULD have done this, considering that I've been playing the Monster Hunter franchise since the first game.

It doesn't get much easier than it being because the money is in the handheld installments. At best, you'll see Wii U versions of the mainline games in the foreseeable future.

That red hit indicator splash cross thingy after every hit looks annoying.

That's only really suppose to pop up if you did a critical hit.

So they either changed it so that appears for all hits...
...only did it for that trailer, to make it look flashy...
...or that weapon is broken, and all it does is critical hits.

Something about it looks off graphically, but the lighting is really nice.

The animations and fighting though...looks like ass from an older MH game.

And then there is the sounds, why the downgrade?
