More Persona 5 tidbits from Hashino - Will be "more approachable" than previous games

]I think it's wise to go off information the developers have explicitly said, not hearsay.[/B] We know for a fact they developed an engine specifically for Persona 5, though I suppose we don't know if it was originally made for the PS3.

Well this is why I mentioned that I don't know if what I read was true or not. Guy above me says they were making it for handhelds. What do we actually know lol.

This is more accurate from what I remember, yeah.

We know what they've told us.

You can't trust game devs and game pr. They lie to us all the time. Remember that one guy who said that his car crashing game wasn't gonna be at e3? It was at e3. Remember when Microsoft told us they couldn't just flip a switch? They flipped a switch. lol

Seriously though we need to compile what they have told us. It seems like there is a lot of rumor info swirling around.

...Why in the world would they lie about anything so far? There is literally nothing controversial about any of the topics they have discussed relating to Persona 5 yet. There's a difference between being healthily cynical and being Yasuhiro Hagakure.

I compiled all Persona 5 info that was said up to June 2013. For the rest, it's pretty much everything that's already been discussed in this thread.

There was a lot of stupid time wasted in the past with "rumors." The game's been announced now; how about we listen to the developers themselves instead of supposed insiders or people who's uncle works at Atlus?

I thought I read somewhere in personagaf that they were making it for ps4 first and then scrapped it in favor of ps3. Not sure if this is true or not.

On the Megami Tensei wiki it says that
Unlike Catherine, which used the Gamebryo engine, Persona 5 will be made with a new engine. Before it was decided that the game would be released exclusively for the PlayStation 3, it was also discussed internally to move the series to mobile gaming devices like the PlayStation Vita or smartphones. Eventually, Hashino and his team chose the PlayStation 3 as they felt that fans would love to see another game for home consoles.

Personally i'm curious to see if Persona 6 will end up on the PS3 in the same manner 3 and 4 ended up on the PS2, or if they will shift over to the PS4. Personally i'm fine with the PS3 graphically, but I do like the extra features the PS4 affords. If Persona 5 was released day and date on Playstation Now I would easily purchase that version.

You could bother citing an instance where Atlus has ever 'lied' about a product, though.

I remember the claim being that they considered portable development, not that they had actually been conducting it for P5.

I think we will see a port of P5 a few years after it comes out. It's a big IP for them, and definitive editions have sold well of their other games.

The can't trust game devs thing was a joke man.

No way Persona 6 is on ps3. No way. It will be 2015 by the time we get 5. p5 should really be one of the last exclusive games to come out on ps3. I want some ps4 games haha.

Sounds like Hashino is talking about accessibility from a themes/storyline perspective, in that it will be easier to identify and sympathize with the main characters. You know how people in the west occasionally complain that they're tired of always playing high school characters? This could be a hint that they'll widen the character pool a bit.

But maybe that's me wishing for a Persona 2 resonance based on the return to a red motif.

I agree with this (the bolded part).

Just seems like a lot of work to put into the old PS3 for just one game you know? But yeah it'd definitely a late one

My guess is they go portable only unless they partner with a larger company to make P6 on PS4,

Or P5 sells millions. (It might).

Just curious if anyone knows, did fans of the series say the same sort of thing about Persona 4? I wouldn't be surprised at all if they do Persona 6 on PS3. They'll save assets in developing a new engine and such for another system. Unfortunately, the Persona games have always been B tier budget wise.

Well here's the thing, ATLUS hasn't really jumped on any next-gen system head first, generally they're a few years behind before they jump to next system. And plus, I'm betting this engine for P5 will most likely be used for P6 and any of the SMT games, if they plan to develop a another SMT game besides Persona again on a console. Similar to how the Nocturne engine was used for all the of PS2 SMT games. So they might stay on the PS3 for awhile, unless their engine is easy to put on the PS4, though considering none of us know the inner-workings of this engine, I have no idea at this point and just going off on speculation.

Also here is something you gotta remember about ATLUS now that someone pointed it out, they're very much a B-Tier developer, so they can't afford to jump to next gen like a lot of larger devs. That's also why you see a lot of assets reused between projects, they have a lot tighter budgets compared to the likes of Square Enix or Capcom.

Hmm, I wonder if there's a chance for a P3P or, ideally, Persona 4 Golden situation with Persona 5.

Playing mainline Persona games in portable machine, even in their vastly outstripped version like P3P, is a blisssssss~

Well, thankfully, I remember the developers talking about how they hated what they had to do to Persona 3 in order to bring it towards the PSP platform and were glad when the Vita came out as it gave them a place to bring Persona 4 without a bunch of concessions. They probably won't pull a P3P again anytime soon.

Heh, people will always be people.

One of the more interesting things I ran across in that thread was the idea of using the Wiimote evoker style, lol.

It was back when there was still hope the Wii would have a flourishing 3rd party ecosystem to match its hardware success. :]

I haven't read, well, any of this thread, so this might be a repeated idea, but I was thinking the other day that it might be neat to have a Persona game that goes in "reverse." Like you start out with a full party, but as the game goes along, it turns out all your friends are really selfish dicks. So you end up fighting one at the end of each dungeon, and the MC ends up having to save the world alone.

So there's this series called Shin Megami Tensei and this thing called the Neutral Path... you might find that it's not too far away from what you're imagining!

I know.

Truthfully I'd rather they put a full P3FES in the P3P complete with anime cutscenes etc etc plus the Answer instead of Female MC route *raise flameshield*

I'd like to see a Persona game where the antagonist is another Wild Card user who is just as competent as you are. Bonus points if he/she can even recruit some of your potential party members to their cause.

Such hope in those youthful days, lol.

Personally, I'd like to see a Persona game where they amp up strategy in encounters with stuff like battling an opponent Persona team. Something like a 4v4 boss battle with other Persona users (wild card user even)

For P Studio's own sake I hope they can reuse the engine they're using for P5 for other games.
P3 and P4 used the same engine so perhaps we could get P6 faster if they used the same engine as P5.

More Liz-like battles? I can dig it.

One would think they wouldn't spend time building an engine from scratch just to use for a single game, right?

This would be amazing! It would really make it personal and could effect social links in interesting and new ways.

Things clearly haven't gone as planned for their console development. I can only assume that Index's financial problems slowed them way down. They're in a bad place now. Making PS3 games in 2014-2016 is worse than making PS2 games in 2006-2008. The PS3-PS4 transition is happening much more quickly, and the PS4 isn't backwards compatible. Making their own engine was a mistake.

Just inject it in my body. I'm ready.

This, jam it into my veins, they will take it.

Sup with all the haters? Do we really still have Megaten fans, hating other Megaten fans for preferring the Persona series over the main series? Alright we get it, slogging from one grind to the next with limited exposition is your preferred method of play. Thanks for stopping by.

Hm, I hadn't considered that concerning the choice of pursuing their own engine. I don't think we have enough information to really say it was a bad idea though. I don't know much about engines, but maybe it was made with other platforms in mind like the Vita and PS4 and not just the PS3. The reason they chose to make their own was to ease the development process for the game in the first place and given that they were adept at reusing resources for their PS2 generation games, it could mean that a lot of Atlus' future games could be using this engine, which could be beneficial in the long run.

Also, it could make for inherently better games than if they had just used an existing engine like they had done with Catherine. I'm also not convinced that making PS3 games for the 2014-2016 period would be much worse for them than developing for the PS4 instead since their primary audience is Japan. This also doesn't mean that future games using this engine won't be cross-platform between PS3 and PS4.

and of course you already know what will happen with the sales after all preorderer have their console, dont we?

No we dont, for all we know the sales could sink very low once every pre orderer has his ps4.
