More PS1 games on PSN shortly

And in the case of SCEA, they want to get the rights to republish it themselves. I read that this is so they can ensure PSP/PS3 compatability.

SCEE is letting third parties publish PSone Classics.

Thats true I forgot about that, still it doesn't explain how Nintendo can seemingly release whatever they want on a whim every week while Sony can barely knock out one game a month! Surely Nintendo would suffer from the same licensing issues that plague Sony?

i read somewhere that for the snes and nes nintendo made the publishers give nintendo the rights to the game or something. thats why they can release whatever they want on the VC.

Sooooo the problem is that SCEA wants to make sure the games work on PSP?

The same SCEA that has granted the PSP store a meager 2 new items since its launch?

Anyway haven't pirate-type people already proven mostly all PS1 games work on PSP?

And they all work for PS3 so put them out for that and update them late for PSP use if needed!

I got sick and tired of waiting, so I bought another PSP and custom firmware'd that sucker. Imported the damn thing and played it through the glorious joy of handheld gaming.

But wouldn't it be in Japanese? I can't read that.

Why are SCEA/SCEE so slow at updating the store anyway? I don't see why NOA/NOE can keep putting out great VC games on a regular basis but Sony can't!

Surely it would actually be easier for them since they don't write separate emulators for each game, all they have to do is scan the original manual and dump the ISO, it's actually more effortless than the VC! Are there some sort of licensing issues that prevent PS1 games in particular from being released?

We've been told in the past that "licensing issues" were the main obstacle, but it's a curiosity why these same "licensing issues" don't seem to affect the frequent release of games on the Wii Virtual Console.

Also, it's been assumed that this has to do with PS1 games being more "modern" than the games that typically appear on the Wii VC. They have to deal with licensed music tracks and voice actors, which weren't a consideration in the days of simpler games on NES/Genesis/TG-16/SNES. With that in mind, I'd then point to Xbox 360, which lately appears to be getting old Xbox games at a much quicker pace than Sony has been posting new PS1 classics. Surely Microsoft would have to deal with the same "licensing issues", right?

Yes, but the quality of PS1 emulation (in the PSP firmware) is already pretty darn good. Next quote sums it up...

I believe so, which makes this all the more puzzling. Also see how Japan has somewhere around 200 PS1 classics, while the US still hasn't exceeded 30.

SCEA should consider allowing more third parties to publish their own PS1 classics. (Namco's already got one game in the US, Tekken 2.) Allow the game to go through SCEA's testing and approval process like any other PSN game, then hand it back to the third-party publisher. This would be preferable to SCEA having to negotiate rights for individual games.

another huge problem with ps1 games compared to VC ones is the soundtrack. ps1 games mostly have orchestrated music, this is a huge deal when you're going to re-publish them via DD, cause you need to ask the owners of music rights the permission.

I've read that they want to ensure PS3/PSP compatibility as well, and that's the delay.

While the emulation is good, they probably want to ensure that the compatibility is 100%, not the hit or miss with PS2 emulation on the early PS3 units.

What bullshit is this? The compatibility of PSOne Classics with PS3/PSP on the JP store is almost 100%, and they have about 200+ titles out. They release 6 titles or so bi-weekly too. There is NO compatibility problem, so there should be no delay. Also, the early PS3 units have hardware compatibility for PS2 games, what emulation? It wasn't hit or miss, it was over 95%.

SCEA just sucks crap, and there's all there is to it. Trying to explain it is pointless because there's nothing to explain.

watch it really be 1 game every 6 months :lol

or at least the ones that have been hanging out in the ESRB list. give me that Suikoden FIRST!

And I'm still waiting for Crash Team Racing. Don't know how there can be a licensing issues with freaking Crash Team Racing. Be nice if Sony would get on that and release it in the states.

The times changed quite a bit between the days of the PS1 and the Xbox. It's possible that the original contracts for Xbox games addressed those issues because digital distribution wasn't too far off in the horizon.

the only game I've bought on the European PSN. I'd ideally like games not released here to make an appearance too. And if TOMBA! came out I'd be on it like [something that's really on something]

Eh, whatever SCEA. I've given up on you guys with PS1 games. Should have been a gametap style selection from the very beginning.

Yeah, it must be so hard for SCEA to release PSOne Classics because they've already exhausted their first party selection and now rely on third party publishers who have issues putting their own titles on PSN........ oh wait that's not it! :lol

That's not ENTIRELY true. Some games are PSP only (I think Arc the Lad 2 is PSP only; Soukaigi and Brave Fencer Musashiden launched PSP only, but were later patched) and some games are PS3 only (the only one i can remember off hand are Armored Core games, but that's cuz it needs more buttons than the PSP has).

Still, there's no excuse and they really need to pick it up. The last thing released on PSN was a bad port of a game on a $20 anthology that works on PS3.

Downloadable PSX-Games is a feature I totally forgot about since Sony did the same. It's a shame that Sony doesn't even release their first party games. Maybe there are some licensing problems with third-party games, but I can't really believe Sony doesn't even offer their own games. How much work could it be to "convert" some games? Like said before, there are hundreds of PSOne games out in Japan.

Sony, why don't you want my money? :/

While SCEA obviously do their own thing, SCEE have certainly been making a push with PSone games in the last month or so. Here's a PSone games released in the last couple updates for Europe...

? 20/11/08
? Sim City 2000

? 13/11/08
? (No PSone games this week)

? 6/11/08
? Spin Jam
? Theme Park World

? 30/10/08
? Cool Boarders 2

? 23/10/08
? Crash Bandicoot 3

Still laughable. And they've the balls to charge more now.

Sim City for £6? Yuck!

This. They've been bullshitting about the PSP store since day one, I think they'll pretty much say anything to cover their ass. Initially I had really high expectations as far as selection goes, but now that I know better, I'd just be happy with Crash Team Racing at the US store.

I have been playing the SOTN on my PSP through the ps store download, and it is really nice for a number of reasons. The sprites are pixel perfect on the PSP screen, it's portable, and is now just embedded on the PSP. I have been having a lot of fun with it.

I would love to see more sprite based games, as they look really awesome on the PSP screen:

Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain (my ps1 system seller)

Metal Gear Solid

Raiden Project

In the Hunt

Einhander

Tenchu
