Most disappointing movie you've seen

Absolutely no contest. How can you have trailers as mind-blowing as this or this and a movie... like this?

Phantom Menace is really the epitome of "disappointing movie". The hype was unbelievably enormous, and the steaming turd that turned out was beyond belief.

You've managed to put the thoughts in my head into two perfect sentences. The silence after the viewing of the movie stays with me forever. My friends didn't say a word for a couple of minutes.

Oh yeah, and I agree with the OP.

Michael Mann - one of my favorite directors
Christian Bale - my favorite actor

But the movie is hot garbage.

Spider-Man 3 is the only right answer. The thing about fan disappointments is that when removed from their over-hyped context, a lot of them are actually pretty decent, while others simply didn't deliver what we were expecting. Few are outright awful.

Spider-Man 3, on the other hand, is one of the only instances of an anticipated sequel that had everything going for it (beloved predecessor, returning director and writer, promising trailers) that ended up being absolutely terrible. It wasn't just mediocre, or misunderstood- it was an absolutely horrible film; certainly one of the biggest disappointments of my generation.

Didn't Raimi basically troll Columbia for forcing him to include Venom in the movie ??

I went into Drive expecting a car chase action flick about a stunt driver/getaway driver. I mean, the premise would suggest as such. But it was a lot slower than I was expecting, and has a cumulative total of about 10 minutes of dialogue over the whole course of the film. And that awful "Real Hero" track tainting an otherwise awesome score.

It was cool and stylish, and I liked it more the second watch, but yeah, was expecting epic chases, cool cars, maybe a few shoot outs, but it was more this...

As I say, after the fact, I do like Drive, but it was a disappointment.

Holy Fuck Balls...THIS!
I didn't watch it until it was put on NetFlix Instant View and it wasn't anything like I expected it would be.
It's not in my top 10 of most disappointing movies ever, but it's the most recent.

What didn't you like? I thought it was a great post-apocalyptic flick with a unique twist.

It's been ten years, but I remember finding the dialogue to be really strained, all of the characters were really boring and I didn't care if they died, and the way Bale's character killed the main dragon was stupid as hell. The only redeeming moment is when McConaughey's character got eaten.

I'd also like to add Gamer as a horribly disappointing movie.

I don't know quite what I was expecting but what I got was laughably bad dialogue.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Was so hyped for Fitzgerald meets Fincher, and all I get is a shittier version of Forrest Gump?!? So much fucking wasted potential.

and Inception too. Though I wasn't that hyped for it - Nolan is a horrible screenwriter - it was just surprising how... boring the film was. Action scenes were awful, whole thing was incoherent, and that final shot was just insultingly stupid (and so blatantly pointless and meaningless). fuck Inception.

The King's Speech. Touching story, but awful. Can't believe I sat through all of that. Never again.

Recent ones... Sherlock Holmes 2, Iron Man 2, Cowboys & Aliens.

Edit: Finished watching it 2 hours ago... Ghost Rider:Spirit of Vengeance. Liked the 1st, this one was terrible with the exception of a few special effects.

King Kong - Jackson's next film after the LOTR trilogy and the ads were great. Skull Island looked freaking amazing and so did Kong himself. Felt a bit too long though. Still I really enjoyed the setup for the expedition to be honest and the Skull Island scenes were great. Should have been edited down, however.

I still really like King Kong. Yeah, it's overly long and the CGI looks pretty dated already, but I think it's a great adventure movie. I'm pretty sure everyone who hates it still got misty-eyed when Kong died. The CGI on him was THAT good.

Normally I'd probably say Inception or Avatar, but since I saw The Tree of Life last week, my god, that takes the cake.

What a horrible movie. And by horrible, I mean so bad, I'd buy a copy of it just to burn it on my neighbor's stoop. Only pretentious film buffs must like it, because it has absolutely no substance whatsoever and the most frustrating 'story' in cinema history.

Spider-man 1, 2 and 3.

Huge Spider-man fan in my youth, liked the cast, loved Sam Raimi - something just didn't connect to me. I think they felt almost too contemporary, too muted of tones - everything felt very warm or earth tones, like the entire series was shot at 630 pm as the sun was starting to go down. I just felt they were blah. And of course Dafoe was terrible, Venom was terrible, Sandman was okay but his retcon was ridiculous, and Doc Ok was the only decent part of the series.

It's soured me on every trying another Spidey as well, at least for a long time.

Seriously the most over-rated superhero series.

Recently? Avatar and Prometheus. Oh, the new Clash of The Titans too.

Old movies? Raimi's Spider-Man flicks, Nolan's Batman flicks, Matrix 2 and 3.

Episode 1 is the true right answer. No contest.

Then:

Matrix sequels

I was crushed

Avatar is also a good one, although I had bad feelings about it

I nominate Moon. I was very excited for that one, and I thought it fell completely flat. It was just going through the motions. Technically proficient, great score, fine performance by Sam Rockwell, but I wasn't engaged at all. I really didn't care about his plight or the story.

Psh, that's a masterpiece.

Yes, thank you.

I didn't even realize Public Enemies was a Mann film. I agree it was awful though.

I also was vastly disappointed by Spider-man 3. Terrible.

I was with Drive until the soundtrack proclaimed that Ryan Gosling was a real human being and a real hero. The first twenty minutes were great, some decent stuff after that. I'll be lynched for this but I thought the soundtrack was pretty bad and the scorpion jacket looked stupid.

But the first that came to mind for me was Gangs of New York. After that maybe Kill Bill / Inglorious Basterds (after the first 10 minutes).

Oh and I Am Legend, especially the shit CGI and the second half. Just stick to the fucking book. The ending of the film was as if they thought "we need to come up with a reason as to why it's called I Am Legend". Was there no-one there at that point who had read the book to say "oh just read this last chapter, it's one of the most powerful endings in classic horror/sci-fi"? Nope, instead some fucking idiot said "what if these terrible characters we introduced to eat Robert Neville's bacon and so we could have Will Smith recite Donkey from Shrek, drive away at the end with a cure and say "we are his legend" or something. I also have an idea for an alternative ending that's even worse."... "Hire this man."

...but....Last Crusades....

You know full well that the rule only applies when the second movie in the series was also top notch. Temple was shitty, so Crusade was always going to be the redeemer.

*Doesn't apply to sequels shot back to back ala Pirates/Matrix

You also forgot Rush Hour 3

I never had any hope in Rush Hour 3, so there was no disappointment coming. I already put my faith in Ratner to at least mimic Singer enough for a good X-Men movie, and he failed that. Not to mention everything about Rush Hour 3 looked like a cash-in.

And I will ignore that Temple comment since you are a member of Team Hook.

As soon as they enter Mola Ram's Temple I immediately lose interest in what is going on. Everything before that is decent enough.

Aw man, that's when it gets good again after the awesome opening! I would take Temple of Doom over everything post Spielberg-SPR, 'cept maybe Minority Report

Oh now I KNOW you're mad.

Besides Minority Report, you have Catch Me If You Can, A.I, Munich, WotW and Tintin.

Tintin is basically the replacement for Temple of Doom in the Spielberg library on my shelf.

And I hate Tintin, fuck that movie. Wouldn't watch that shit again for free.

Will we ever agree on anything, Sculli? Quick, post your opinion on War Horse!

I would post the Gordon gif right now, but I can't over use it yet.

War of the Worlds is classic summer blockbuster Spielberg outside of the ending (
There is no way in hell that kid lived!

I'm tempted to say Terminator 2, but really, it's probably Superman Returns. Not just because the movie itself was disappointing, but Singer choosing it directly led to the also crappy X3. Summer 2006 was like getting kicked in the nuts and then having your nuts set on fire.

War Horse belongs in this thread. I was super fucking disappointed with War Horse.

Completely agree. Outside of the last minute of the film, War of the Worlds is fucking ACE.

Thank you. That's the shit that keeps my hype in check for Lincoln. Yeah, it's Spielberg, Daniel Day Lewis is Lincoln, the IMDB page is just filled with talented actors, Williams and Kaminski will probably deliver the goods, but...

Fuck

This year, probably The Raid: Redemption. I was really hyped to see it and while it was alright, it wasn't close to living up to my expectations.

Fuck

On the contrary, War Horse was absolutely let down by the laziness of its shitty script (and some laziness from Janusz - WHAT THE FUCK WITH THAT STAGE LIGHTING BRO?). Lincoln has gotten a lot of praise from the cast for it's script - written by Munich's Tony Kushner. I'm expecting aces.
