Switchblade Romance

8 / 10

A slick French horror movie. Generally good but there are elements that will annoy many people. Such as
the killer being an imaginary bloke created by the jealousy and lust of one of the main characters
and some "apparent" plotholes such as the
truck
.

Personally I thought it was good and if you view it from the correct perspective it makes
kinda almost
sense.

I watched this a few months ago, and I wasn't really impressed, and annoyed by the plot-holes. However there are some absolutely brutal scenes such as
when girl rips apart that man in the car with that chainsaw towards the end

After I talked to the friend who let me borrow it about the
twist
he replied by saying
"It doesn't have to make sense
which I found absolutely ridiculous :lol

I wasted $3.99 renting this. Just say no to Nicolas Cage movies.
Pretty much.

He always plays the same part. Himself.

But he was actually the last of this film's problems. I can't believe someone wrote the story down and someone else thought it'd make a good film.

LITTLE CHILDREN

had the dvd, never got round to it. Finally watched it. I was quite amused to see the actor who plays roshack in this. And the role...

all up, it was very good and the end... painful. very good movie. The cast of kate winslet, patrick wilson are amazing. and the pain they experienced felt extremely ernest.

St Elmo's Fire

I was totally blown away. Loved every minute of it. All the characters were genuinely likeable imho.
Why did the 90's have to ruin everything ?

Fantastic Fest Early Party Volume One
worlds_greatest_dad_poster.jpg

World's Greatest Dad - ** My review is pretty much identical to Cosmic Bus'. After the first half hour, it isn't really a black comedy anymore and is no longer funny. People clamoring that this is a staunch black comedy are probably people who still think South Park is on the edge. Interesting premise that could have been 100 times funnier perhaps if Neil LaBute didn't become a fucking cop out. Was featured as a Fantastic Fest early feature this year.

Not Quite Hollywood - *** 1/2
While I think a better documentary could eventually be made about the subject, perhaps more fleshed out and detail orientated but perhaps it wouldn't be best suited since while it is filled with factoids, it makes all the Australian genre films look so fucking cool and wants you to go out and watch them all (well maybe not the sex romps in the first third but they would still be alright all things considered). I added Man from Hong Kong to my cue. Played at last year's Fantastic Fest.

Bronson - ***
While there are many things I don't like about Bronson, this is easily probably the best biopic that can be made about Britain's most famous prisoner and there quite a few generally really funny moments. The tea scene in particular is going to be one of my favorites of the year. Tom Hardy has this great chemistry for his character too even though I thought some of the theatrical scenes didn't work well. There is a great energy in this film too that made me smile. Playing at this year's Fantastic Fest.
dirty+mind+2009.jpg

Dirty Mind - ***
Reminds me of a really fun cult film from the 70s, the lead is charming too and my favorite thing about this film is that even by the final act, it never feels tired. I couldn't give this any less than *** on the fact that has two of the funniest jokes about Parkinson's ever. With films like this, this year's Fantastic Fest looks to be way better than last years. Oh yeah, playing this year at Fantastic Fest.

Chaser - ***
Finally get around to this one, Chaser is a good thriller that keeps you on edge the entire way. It is really well made though and doesn't seem to drag. I love how it felt quite unpredictable too even though I hate it when the main character figures out clues and then they have flashbacks to those clues. Errr. Ah well. Played at last year's Fantastic Fest.
2009041900401_1.jpg

Breathless - **** Expect this one to rack up tons of top 10s at the end of this year and is so far the best film I have seen released this year. I think Breathless does for abuse who Gran Torino did for racism and make it into a really heartfelt tragic comical film. I really hope a bigger distro handles the film than someone that would fuck it up like Magnet or IFC. I wonder if this is going to be South Korean's entry for their foreign nominee pick? I hope this becomes a sleeper hit. This is playing at this year's Fantastic Fest.

I cried for like a solid 25 minutes as a result of this movie. I don't think I've cried this hard since I saw the Lion King when I was, like, 4.

Not Another Teen Movie

Watching movies with friends automatically makes them a little better and more fun.
I've seen this before and thought it was complete shit but it was somewhat passable this time.

Finally got to see this after buying a 3-pack for this and Clear and Present Danger and Patriot games. Smart movie and really really awesome as well I loved the whole cast and Connery's awesome as always.

Gonna watch the other two these days off. I really enjoyed this film.

V for Vendetta. This was a good one, really enjoyed it! I don't know the comic or anything so I could just watch the movie without any knowledge about the plot.

The Great Buck Howard: what a waste of time. Colin Hanks has no talent whatsoever. He wouldn't even find a job as an extra if it wasn't for his father..

Really? There was someone earlier who recommended it.

How was Emily Blunt in it? I'd see a movie just for her :lol

I personally like the movie more than the comic.

How to Lose Friends & Alienate People

Didn't really care for the whole romantic sub-plot, but the rest was pretty funny, managed to make me laugh out loud from time to time which rarely happens when i watch comedies online.
And i really loved the small references to the Big Lebowski :D

Sicko - 7/10 - Michael Moore's heart is in the right place. I was really happy to see him travel to all these countries and get some perspective on their health care systems, but going to Cuba...seemed contrived. I generally agree with him on most things, but he only shows one side to every issue, and I hope one day he might start to acknowledge that.

City of God - 9.5/10 - This is one of those movies I knew I would like before watching it. Brilliant film, I was enthralled for the 2 hours.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang - I watched it when it came out, and today i watched it again. Its still a fuck awesome movie, i laughed my ass off. :lol

Clock Work Orange - 6/10
Inglorious Basterds - 8/10
District 9 - 3/10
Into the Wild - 8/10
The Descent - 7/10

I don't feel like describing each, but if you wanna argue scores, ill state my opinions.

Bit of a movie binge over the last week:

District 9: Best sci-fi movie I've seen since Children of Men (I haven't seen Sunshine though). First half was fantastic and posed some really interesting questions, but the second half degenerates a bit into typical, albeit excellent action. 8/10.

Solaris: Soderbergh's version. Quiet and a bit too slow even for someone that was expecting it. However, it's brilliantly executed and really gets at the essence of what the book was about. The question of how well do we really know each other coupled with the utter incomprehensible intelligence of Solaris always intrigues me. 8/10

The Maltese Falcon: I was jonesing for a noir film, thought this would fit the bill. It was different than what I expected, but very good. Bogart completely steals every scene he's in, I love Peter Lorre, and the plot and dialogue are pretty tight. The dame's super annoying though. 7.5/10.

Duck Soup: I've seen bits of this previously, and overall it's not quite as funny as I remembered. There are some timeless scenes that had me rolling though, including the feud with the lemonade vendor and the mirror. Absolute classic stuff. Not a fan of the singing and dancing however, and the end is stupidly abrupt. 7/10

Brazil: Just watched this, and what a mindtrip. It kept reminding me of the Futurama episode with the bureaucrats. :lol There were a lot of individual scenes that stuck out in my mind, but I think I need a bit of time to digest it. The ending was pretty stunning and definitely unconventional. Characterization is quite wacky for the most part though. As an aside, that necrophilia line was pretty hot. 8/10, may revise.

Departures: I didn't think anything was going to knock UP off the top, but this is unquestionably my top film of 2009. Stunning movie about life and death. Maybe recently losing a loved one helped me connect with this film a bit more, I don't know. Yes, some of it was contrived, but every scene was played with such sincerity that it did not matter one bit. Hisaishi's soundtrack is incredible. 9.5/10.

Spartacus

What an epic movie. Not many movies have been able to keep me interested for 3 hours but this certainly did. I like how Kirk Douglas was jealous of not getting the part in another epic film so decided to go about making a different one with him as the star. :lol

Don't want to argue lol, just wondering what didn't you like about A Clockwork Orange?
I guess it's not for everyone is it.

sure, but movie is about social healthcare, which is free in Cuba. That's a fact and that's what he wanted to show

I've been holding out on this film because of the bad reviews, but if the Lebowski references are true then I might just give it a shot.

I think you got them right.

Watched Fargo. Quite liked it, fun little movie, but not quite sure why its like "holy fucking shit this god damn movie every body". If anyone would like to explain, I'm a listening.

Was on the telly last night, nice little wacky French flick.
Managed to keep me entertained. Probably need to suspend your disbelief at the door.

Lolita

I've seen it before, but I just finished watching it for the first time in a few years. I was reminded of it by the Leon and Kubrick threads yesterday. Really incredible movie. There's something that never sits right in films where they sexualize younger actresses, Interview with a Vampire being the prime example. Of course this is a much more implied instance generally, but it's not pleasant viewing moment to moment, and is only really enjoyable after the fact.

I can very rarely enjoy films dating from that era, but it's surprisingly modern feeling.

Couldn't even make it through the halfway point. So incredibly bad.

0/10.

Almost as bad as Ballistick: Ecks vs. Sever. :lol

One of the worst movies I have ever seen. I couldn't make it to the end either it's just so baaaad.

The Cave (2005) - 0/10
Horrible, horrible movie. Not horrible in a funny way, just horrible. Stay away from it.

Wolf Creek - 7/10
Great photography, plot is based on a true story so it's even more uncomfortable and "shocking". Recommended.

I kinda liked it. I mean it wasn't amazing but it was worth watching.

I loved the books. I really hope that with the new Guy Ritchie franchise if it turns out to be good, they might have a Lupin vs. Sherlock Holmes film.

Really creepy horror film about a group of workers who have to clear asbestos from an abandoned mental hospital. Came out in 2001 and I hated it the first time I saw it back in 02' as I think I fell asleep. Just watched it in the dark and found it to be one of the creepiest films I have seen in a while. Also just found out it was directed by the same guy who did the Machinist, which I really enjoyed.

What I found to be the best part of the movie is the hospital itself, which really exists. Highly atmospheric, somewhat slow, and downright creepy. Really enjoyed it.

I loved that movie. It was a cheap rental that i picked up for some weird reason. I watched it at 1 am while drinking a bottle of wine.....i about pissed myself.

The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo - 8/10. Really drew me despite the slow pacing. Strong Swetish mystery/thriller. The camera work was good, nice picture, great acting (particularly from Noomi Rapace). Not something I'd watch again, but I'm really glad I saw it this once.

Mesrine: L'Instinct de Mort (Part 1).
Great film, with a magnificant performace from Vincent Cassel. On to part 2!

Watchmen (EE).
Loved it and It's just as good as it could be. Only thing holding it bit a back is the fact that key plotpoints from the novel are not given enough weight and importance. Thanks to that I don't think a lot of people who haven't read the novel will be able to completely follow the plot, which is a shame, because it has a great story to tell. That said, I couldn;t be happier with the end result. I've only seen the EE though, not the original release, which I imagine leaves even less time for the important plotpoints to make an impact.

ehh, I miss the old Woody knumasayin?

I would lump both of those films probably in my top 20 Woody Allens but I fucking love Woody Allen though. I don't think any of his films I have seen this decade have been bad either. I do wish he spent a little bit more time on Cassandra's Dream because that could have been great other than just really good. Maybe got another actor than Ewan McGregor because Colin Ferrall was fucking great in it and I loved the Phillip Glass score. I also think Say Anything is underrated and Scoop is fun too. What else came out this decade? Small Time Crooks is one of Woody Allen's best screwball comedy films too. Sweet and Lowdown (ok, a decade is probably long enough) is my third favorite Woody Allen film.
