Best movie of the year.

just saw this today. fantastic! j.g.l. continues to clean house. had some very profound things to say about what it means to feel like you're in love with someone, too, which is rare. the words "honest," "genuine," and "real" come to mind. if you've ever struggled with a relationship you should go see it. hell, even if you haven't, you should go see it.

I must admit I want another Annie Hall :(

this is going to sound like a weird coincidence, but 500 DAYS OF SUMMER has that "whirlwind romance that goes wrong and trying to figure out what goes wrong with romances in general" motif that ANNIE HALL did so well

Breathless - **** Expect this one to rack up tons of top 10s at the end of this year and is so far the best film I have seen released this year. I think Breathless does for abuse who Gran Torino did for racism and make it into a really heartfelt tragic comical film. I really hope a bigger distro handles the film than someone that would fuck it up like Magnet or IFC. I wonder if this is going to be South Korean's entry for their foreign nominee pick? I hope this becomes a sleeper hit. This is playing at this year's Fantastic Fest.
This sounds interesting... I'll have to check it out. It's not South Korea's entry though; that is Bong Joon-ho's Mother.

In the past few weeks I've seen (for the first time):

I'm a Cyborg, But That's OK | A Bittersweet Life | Moon | Adventureland

District 9 | Haeundae

Also rewatched Lady Vengeance and Memories of Murder as I'm still on my streak of showing my friends Korean movies; their interest was peaked after we saw Thirst. Come to think of it, I haven't seen a movie this past month that I've disliked. All have ranged from being solid (but with some problems) to being very very good.

I can't remember the last time I saw a movie where I could relate to the main character so much. I really loved this. A lot. Don't know what else to say...

In the past few days i have seen..

Dirty harry - First time seeing it, really bad-ass, and surprisingly for a action movie has a moral theme to it. Gonna watch the 4 sequels next if i get around to it.

Friday Night Lights - Decent movie at best, some great scenes and music there and there. But it feels so flat compared to the TV series. I assume the movie would've been great for the time it was released in, but with the TV series basically improving and expanding on every theme the movie covered, it definitely hasn't aged well.

The Elephant Man - Beautiful cinematography, the B&W added so much to the atmosphere of the movie, and made it feel very dickens ish.
Asides from that, it's probably one of the saddest movies i ever seen, some scenes were just.:( it was also kinda interesting seeing anthony hopkins play a nice guy for once.:lol

Eastern Promises - Awesome movie, i popped it in with having no idea what to expect and got a very awesome
naked fight scene
.:lol everything else was top-notch (acting, directing, story, characters etc). The only thing i didn't like was the 'twist' , which i feel pretty 'meh' about. But it did lead to a pretty good scene, and somewhat leaves itself open for a sequal.

Girlfriend_experience.jpg

Kind of all over the place, too much focus on the boyfriend whose story goes largely unexplained anyway, and lots of amateurish "acting"...except for, surprisingly, Sasha Grey, whose scenes were by far the most compelling parts of the movie.

Overall, not that great a film, but Sasha Grey turns in the most surprising performance I've seen in a movie all year.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang

I generally don't like movies with a narrator, so that was the only thing i disliked in this . Downey and Kilmer were perfect, very fun movie.

8 out of 10

Very creepy movie.I think insane asylums are some of the best setting for a horror movie. It just naturally gives off a creepy atmosphere.

I watched Twelve Monkeys yesterday. I saw the original probably 12-13 years ago and it couldn't grab the attention of my then teenage mind. What an awesome movie!

I really enjoyed this movie!

This past weekend, I saw Reservoir Dogs, Jackie Brown, and Pulp Fiction for the first time.
JB was okay and PF was phenomenal. I don't get what everyone sees in RD...

edwood.jpg

I was watching Angry Video Game Nerd Jame's Rolfe's review of Ed Wood movies and the entire history of the filmmaker also talking about the Ed Wood movie made about him. I never got to see it til now, it's rather bizarre the story and Ed Wood himself but despite everyone's criticism he had a lot of vision for his film and tons of ambition, and went through with his visions like Orson Welles told him he should do. So he made Plan 9 and so forth. Martin Landau as Lugosi was awesome, really nailed him. Sad what happened to him though. Yeah I liked the film, pretty good. Burton does really well with films dealing with outcasts.

I watched Adventureland. I guess you could call it a coming of age movie, I really enjoyed it. Great characters and acting, its funny and very well written. I recommend it, its very pleasant and charming, it would make for a good date movie. My only complaint was that the ending was too cliche and predictable.
He finds her in New York and spills his heart out to her in the rain...and everything was happy ever after. Meh.

The recent thread sort of inspired me...

I'm actually planning on watching Hard Candy next... it's with Ellen Page. Has anyone seen it?

I thought the ending was great mostly because it would remind me of something I would do. My favorite thing about it was
he went to New York and decided not to go to Columbia, live through experience and plans on just getting a crappy job within a week. I think the film is highly autobiographical and sometimes moments in life can end on sweet notes like that.
. I think the reason why people take advantage of these endings and call them cliche is because while we have these constant sweet moments like that, our lives go on while a movie has to end. I really do think Adventureland will be my favorite film of the year and it will be a miracle if it can sneak into the top 10 nominees.

What did you think of those movies? I would like more people to write more about what they thought about the films instead of just posting pictures. Star reviews are better than nothing. I wonder if Breathless will be like last year's Let the Right One In because of the silly Oscar regulations, it is going to be shunned (Let the Right One In couldn't get nominated because it wasn't Sweden's entry for the award but then again, who knew that a horror film would garner such acclaim as it did).

Yeah, the ending is quite lovely.

I can see why so many people thought this movie was misogyny incarnate, but to me it came across as more...I dunno.

It's hard to relate how this movie made me feel
aside from the testicle shatterting sympathy pain.
I always rank my art-films in reference to Salo, and this one came close.

As said earlier, I'm going to have to revise my Brazil score from 8/10 to 9/10. I can't stop thinking about it. Like I said, the characterization is completely wonky in the second half, but there is just SO much fascinating stuff in the movie that it's one of the rare cases where I don't quite mind.

I keep whistling the damn main tune now as well. Catchy as hell.

The real Ed Wood never actually met Orson Welles.

Ghost Dog

Such an amazing movie. I was surprised when I saw it was only referenced on two threads...

One thread was about blaxploitation, a thread this movie doesn't really belong in. Jim Jarmusch and Forest Whitaker?

The other thread was about samurai flicks, which this movie falls into, but doesn't really fit well there either.

This movie is an amusing mobster/hitman flick on its surface, with an undertone of traditional samurai honor-code tied into it. I can't believe I've never seen it before or really heard anything about it - it's been out since 2000.

:lol :lol :lol

I always laugh my ass of as those who must have recently boarded the film-school Jamusch wankfest after a good film like Coffee and Cigarettes, only to heap praise on to one of the most insipidly silly films in Ghost Dog. For goodness sake people, he twirls his pistol around like a samarai sword when holstering it. :lol

Layer Cake - Just wow, i was sure i'd heard bad things, but when i bought it everyone i knew was like "Oh yeah Layer Cake's brilliant!" and damn it is. Very, very unexpected ending for me, Craig was fucking fantastic as.. that main guy (honestly i dikdn't even realise he never says his name until the credits rolled).

Also i went out yesterday, bought loads of classics and apparently awesome movies, spent £60 fucking quid.
Tarantino box set (Only one i haven't watched is Jackie Brown though)
Death proof
There Will Be Blood
Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Lock, Stock and 2 Smoking Barrels
Ocean's Eleven
Scarface
Watchmen
American History X

And as birthday presents (Yeah was my 18th, hence i went out and bought shitloads of 18 rated movies)
American Werewolf in London
Nightmare on Elm Street
Night of The Living Dead
(My dad said these were classic horror films i should watch)

So guys, where do i start here?

This is my first Jarmusch film, although I've heard good things about him, which is why I rented it.

Also, who cares about the holstering thing. It may come across as a little campy because of little things like that, but for the most part it doesn't stray from the course or make plot concessions just to satiate the audience. I like that in a film.

last few I watched
- Transformers 2
it's ok, I enjoyed it actually.

- Harry Potter and the half blood prince
I still am wondering why did I bother watching it, only feeling tired and bones stiffed after almost 3 hours.

- District 9
Liked it alot. :D

Watching UP next when it finally crawls its way here in AUS. few more weeks left to go:D :D

Hel yeah, Layer Cake is great. It's like Rock and Rolla, only good.

Mindblowing. This was the second viewing but I hadn't really appreciated it until now.
To create that 40 years ago is pretty much unbelievable.
The soundtrack is amazing, though hearing it and immediately thinking of the parodies ruins it a tiny tiny bit. I feel sad that I saw the parodies before the real thing.

Started watching one of the special features but had to stop. Hopefully will get through all of them eventually. The one I started watching was introduced by James Cameron. :)

I saw screenings of Extract and World's Greatest Dad this week -- both were followed by Q&A's with their respective directors.

Extract - 3/5
A bit plodding, kind of like a King of the Hill in that much of it isn't supremely funny but it has its moments. I thought all of the actor's did nice jobs, there wasn't a weak link. The movie just had that sort of slice of life feel to it and at times, dragged. David Koechner steals the show.

Judge's Q&A was enjoyable -- he has a shaved head now which really kind of threw me off. He did Beavis and Butthead once upon request and indicated he had some ideas for doing more with them including them being tech support. Has apparently been fiddling around with animation over the years but nothing substantial to present.

World's Greatest Dad - 4/5
I've not seen Bobcat's other two films but found a lot to like here. Please, if you intend to see this, avoid any spoilers you can. I dont think the film would work quite as well otherwise. Robin Williams is hung like a horse.

The Q&A from Bobcat was probably the longest of any I've seen following these AICN screenings (the coolest likely remains District 9). He's a funny guy and was pretty insightful (an admitted surprise). I liked that he sat in the theatre and watched the movie alongside everyone else -- he said he got misty a few times with all of the positive reaction.

fucking amazing movie. But I guess only UK blokes will like it

I saw this too. I had no idea who Brian Clough is and I don't connect to the sport the way that British people do (which is kind of odd now that I think about it, since I played soccer for 10 years), but Sheen's performance is probably one of the best of the year.

I think this movie is a little bit over-hyped, but it is most definitely worth watching at least once. I'm pretty desensitized when it comes to violence, gore, and other gross stuff in movies, but there is one scene in this movie that made me extremely squeamish and is probably the reason I won't watch this movie repeatedly...
You know which one I'm talking about, guys

As for movies I've seen recently:

Battlestar Gallactica (Miniseries) - 8.5/10 - I tried watching the show starting with the first episode of season one and I really couldn't get into it. A co-worker told me about the miniseries which is essentially a 3-hour movie that sets the stage for the regular series that follows, and after seeing it I'm thoroughly stoked on the show. To anyone who is interested but hasn't yet got into Battlestar Gallactica, I would definitely recommend checking this out first as it really helps to explain why things are the way they are when the series starts.

Drag Me to Hell - 7.5/10 - This was entertaining. I was going in prepared for a bunch of cheesy scares and that's pretty much what I got. This film is classic Sam Raimi-styled horror, which is exactly what I was hoping for. Perhaps not as good as the reviews suggested it was, but I thought it was paced excellently and is definitely worth a watch.

I can't believe it took me this long to watch this. A hilarious and surreal comedy.

Complete shit. Easily Tarantino's worst film. Script is cringe worthy and the much hyped car chase was totally anticlimactic.

Agreed, the ending was lame. New York is too big to just happen to run into someone like that.

This also bugged me in 500 days of summer where JGL just happens to be sitting on that bench as Zooey walks by.

Watched Adventureland the other day too, hated it, except for a couple of fun parts, it was boring as hell for me.
