The New World

Thank you to everyone that worked on this film. Thank you, VERY much. You have given a great gift to mankind. I say this without any hesitation. I have had many hard times throughout my life. Often thought of suicide. This creation just destroyed me, and now i am born again. This sounds like a lot of hyperbole to some, but i do not care. I have to say what i am feeling right now. My whole body is shaking. Amazing sensation. What a spectacle. MY GOD.

Throughout the movie, i did not blink once. I'm Not sure if i was even breathing. Everything was flowing. My god, my heart is beating so fast right now.

I swear I saw new things in that film for 8 or so subsequent viewings, and even after I stopped noticing much new of significance, it is still so powerful. Greatest film of all time, only to be surpassed by The Tree of Life. Malick for Nobel prize of some sort.

Divorce, Italian Style is HI-larious. Mastroianni = awesome. Don't really feel like doing a paragraph-length for this one; it has some surprising depth, especially giving its rather absurd nature, but at its core, it's mostly just an extremely well-done comedy with great performances and cinematography. Films could do worse, and have.

Also, the part where they watch La Dolce Vita in this is surreal as all hell.

Have you watched Valhalla Rising? Shorter, tighter, but gave me New World vibes. Not as good, but hugely hypnotic.

I finally got around to watching Resident Evil: Afterlife. Not great, but not bad. Getting tired of the post-movie sequel teases. I wish they'd just wrap it up, and wait a bunch of years for a reboot.

I'm currently looping the last 5 minutes, and crying. Over and over again.

Not exactly serious, but sort of serious.

I was honestly surprised at how funny The Other Guys was. I try to recommend it to people, but it's difficult to be convincing when all I can think of is "Oh hey it's a funny cop comedy, yeah lol"

The scene where she acknowledges Rolfe's qualities always gets to me.
Everything in the film gets to me. It literally caused a shift in my entire perspective and approach to life. I can't say anything remotely close to that about any other artistic work except other Malick films. Many works have stirred feelings, raised questions, given answers, presented issues, inspired notions, challenged beliefs, and educated, but no others have been transforming, and in such undeniably good and healthy ways.

Be sure to watch the sequel, INFERNO. You can skip the third one, though. Sighs.

DEEP RED is regarded by many as Argento's best, though I am partial to TENEBRE.

I have INFERNO next in my netflix queue followed by Tenebre. Thanks for the suggestions.

King's Speech

I liked it, had some good moments and Colin played his role perfectly. Barbossa was also pretty good. yeah, i dont know if the movie deserved the oscar but thats not my thing to decide. i liked it and i'm glad i watched it.

YES. Perfect way to describe what i am feeling right now.

The New World is now my favorite movie of all time, and it IS the greatest move of all time. I hope i die in 5 minutes, so i can keep this sensation with me forever.

As someone who recognizes the quality, your admiration will only deepen in the future as you watch it more times after having had breaks to think about it as you live your life and come into more applications of what it gave you.

Uh guess I should probably watch some Malick movies

On the Waterfront (1954)
Very great. Excellent acting from Brando and Malden. Kazan's position at that time makes it a little blatantly political for my tastes, but that was easy to overlook. His direction was strong, and I can definitely see why Scorsese lists him as his biggest influence. However, I feel Scorsese has, over the years, improved on everything he learned from Kazan. Watching this movie was like seeing the roots of the potential that filmmakers like Scorsese would go on to realize.

You'd think by these recent posts that The New World was loved by all, but I know that's not the case. Days of Heaven remains the only Malick film I've seen, though I hope to change that at some point. Can't watch his films unless I have something nice to watch them on.

Badlands is alright, but Days of Heaven is when he starts to get Malicky...and then takes it to a whole new level 20 years later (!! such a long break) with Thin Red Line onwards.

Its one of those films where those who like it....REALLY like it.

Im of the same mind. Its easily one of my favorite features of the last decade. Its pure bliss.

The fact that Malick currently has 2 films in the can, one pretty much ready to be released, and one he just finished shooting is pretty amazing. Can't wait :D

oh yeah, god no, that's definitely not the case. i hated it. and it didn't fare too well on rt either - not that that usually means or "proves" anything, just saying. but i do love days of heaven and think it's infinitely superior to the new world. would very much recommend that for everyone who wants to get into malick.

I enjoyed the 3rd one and 1st one in that order, mainly because they managed to capture some of the atmosphere of the games in certain parts and both had somewhat interesting stories. The 2nd one was pretty bad and the last one (Afterlife) was possibly the worst movie I ever wasted money to see in a theater. I knew it was gonna be a turd going in, but my buddy loves this series way more than he should and he convinced me to go against my better judgment. God bless you for finding some entertainment in there, I felt like more than anything the movie was insulting me intelligence the whole time.

Have seen the tree of life's trailer, though? Might be worth living a few months still.

Just watched Triangle tonight. Thought it was excellent and I'm considering buying it now after enjoying it a lot. Just go into it not knowing anyting and you'll likely come out pleasantly surprised.

Ander, after thinking about it. Watch the movies in reverse release date and Days for last. It's his best and you'll probably agree after watching it.

Alright, sounds good.
Even without seeing his movies I'm absoutely amped for Tree of Life. Looks spectacular.

Just watched Pi for the first time recently. So very good! Any recommendations of similar movies?
Hm, well if what won you over on it was the themes of obsession, just watch any other Aronofsky film. If you're looking for something that's sci-fi, original and with an interesting plot: I'd say Primer is an amazing choice.

So I just finished watching Stranger than Fiction. What an utterly delightful film. It was pretty darn Truman Show-esque in being so meta and Maggie Gyllenhaal was absolutely lovely. I wish Will Ferrell did more films like this instead of his more hit-or-miss comedies which is a sentiment I share with Adam Sandler.

Pretty much every Aronofsky film would fit right in in terms of having obsessive protagonists. I'm just bias though so I'm just going to shout out The Fountain before you watch any of his other films.

Yeah, I think I should dive into his other movies. Maybe I'll start with The Fountain!

Excellent. Actually while I'm still here, is there any other film out there that gets rather meta/philosophical akin to Truman Show or Man on the Moon?

I'm surprised I don't post in this thread more often, considering I'm a freshman in college, majoring in Film ha.

So, after being greatly influenced and inspired by Chan Wook Park's Oldboy, I finally sat down and watched the other two films in the Vengeance Trilogy: Sympathy For Mr. Vengeance and Sympathy For Lady Vengeance.

I was happily surprised with both of them. While I don't think either captivated me as much as Oldboy did, I would almost argue that I enjoyed Mr. Vengeance just as much. If for nothing else, the cinematography.

Lady Vengeance, while a great film, didn't seem to grab me quite as much as the other two films. It was interesting throughout the film, but it left me asking to many questions about the wrong things, like plot holes and whatnot. It just didn't seem as thought out or planned as the previous two films. But I did enjoy how it handled the whole vengeance aspect differently.

I'd highly reccomend all three films to anyone who hasn't seen them before though. But if you do decide to watch them, please head my warning:

Don't ruin any part of Oldboy for yourself if at all possible. Knowing nothing but maybe a light synopsis of the film will allow the film to impact you like nothing else.

I saw The Insider upon GAF's suggestion. WHAT A GREAT FUCKING MOVIE!

I don't know why I had never heard of it until now. Decided to check it up and found out that it got overshadowed by American Beauty and The Matrix.

Glad I got to see it!

I saw The Godfather and The Godfather Part II for the first time last week.
Very enjoyable. I didn't even recognise that it was Pacino lol. Dude used to look good.

While most critics seem to think that Part 2 is equal to the original, I found it to be quite good but not as great. What's moviegaf's thoughts?

I continue to find Diane Keaton quite irritating and she just seems very unappealing to me.

In some ways I'm not looking forward to seeing Part III as it'd supposed to not be up to the standard of the first two but it'll be nice to finish the saga.

I also saw Exit Through The Gift Shop which was great. Guetta seems like a tool but besides that it was a great and interesting documentary. Banksy was very funny in the little interviews imo.

Speed Racer: This one is tough to judge. I thought the art design and cinematography were fantastic but the plot and nonlinear flashbacks were horrible. Honestly I didn't like it.

Mortal Kombat: FLAWLESS VICTORY. Holy crap, this was great. I loved Liu Kang's hair, Raiden's voice, and fucking Bridgette Wilson. And dat soundtrack.

Rain Man: Finally finished it. Just a nice bromance movie.

World Trade Center: Damn, what an emotional movie. Oliver Stone is good. They made the collapse and rubble look like the end of the world. It's like 127 Hours except no one's arms are cut off.

I just watched Burlesque. It was okay, pretty much what I expected. I like Christina even though she's a hot mess right now. Cher looks great for her age, and anything with Stanley Tucci is usually pretty good.

Prince of Persia is much worse than I could have imagined. This is the epitome of a videogame movie in the sense that it feels like levels a la the Crystal Skull.
