I saw The Insider upon GAF's suggestion. WHAT A GREAT FUCKING MOVIE!

I don't know why I had never heard of it until now. Decided to check it up and found out that it got overshadowed by American Beauty and The Matrix.

Glad I got to see it!

The guy that the movie is based on (Jeffrey Wigand) came and spoke to my middle school way back 2002, one of the most interesting guys I've ever seen. He talked about the guys who follow him around everywhere he goes to this day to make sure he doesn't blab the stuff about big tobacco that he's not supposed to talk about, however he did say that they weren't allowed to come to schools :lol

It wasn't until years later when I was a senior in high school that saw The Insider and put the pieces together and figured out Russel Crowe's character and the guy who spoke to our 7th grade class were the same person, my mind was blown.

As for the movie, I love it as well. Christopher Plummer and Pachino are top notch.

Basically does what Lost tried to do in 6 seasons in about 90 minutes.

I was honestly surprised at how funny The Other Guys was. I try to recommend it to people, but it's difficult to be convincing when all I can think of is "Oh hey it's a funny cop comedy, yeah lol"
i avoided it for the longest time because i don't really like watching will ferell movies but now i regret avoiding it.

Yesterday i've seen the first part (of two) of Carlos the Jackal.
Carlos+-+the+Jackal.jpg

I'm really liking it, the photography is very beautiful and the story is fast paced (almost too much).
The ending of the first part was also very cool.
If anything, the costant fast forward is a bit confusing (every two scenes, there's a "2 days later" or "1 month later").
Looking forward for the second part :P

Just watched Episode 1 of Carlos. I'm not entirely sure if it's a single movie split into two or a two-part miniseries (is there even a difference?)

Does it get better or worse from here? I'm gonna end up watching it all anyway, but thus far I would just classify it as above average. The plot is involving and I like the overall style, but the character of Carlos is almost unrealistically cool. James Bond +3. Everything he wears is right out of a fashion magazine, he fucks any girl he wants and, luckily for him, every girl interested in sociopolitical uprisings is also an Elle magazine model. On top of that, it looks like he has an overall inability to be outsmarted or outperformed by anyone. I mean, I appreciate a hero character but this is pretty over the top. I refuse to believe the real guy was like this.

Edit- didn't even see Urbanrats post :p How coincidental.

Got done with Valkyrie. After watching Inglorious Basterds, I was kind of disappointed that everyone talks in English in this movie.

I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that you really had no clue of what was going on in Lost if that's the meaning you derived from it.

Also, The Sunset Limited was extremely disappointing.

Both characters are such obvious cardboard cutouts of two extreme ideologies with Black (Jackson) as the Evangelical Christian and White (Jones) as the atheist. If that in itself weren't bad enough, there are the so entirely grating moments with Jones trying to pose as an uncomfortable person on the verge of suicide (in case you didn't know, Black saves White from killing himself via a train wreck [literally]) and yet, with the film's conclusion, suddenly White is so much more confident in spewing his atheistic message, doing his best to offer his condemnation of any ideals that Black holds. And after those previous 80 some odd minutes, Black does more than falter; he cowers into something resembling the fetal position and then lets White go (because he was holding him prisoner before...doesn't want White to go out and actually succeed in his suicide mission the next time around), leaving the film with an ambiguous ending as we wonder whether White will go on living or whether The Sunset Limited will finally take him out. And on the flip side, we're left wondering whether this one encounter with a man so vehemently opposed to everything Black stands for is enough to change his ideals, or, at the very least, cease being so steadfast in his faith.

I adore these one set movies between two characters (I'm thinking of Linklater's Tape) as well as movies that examine religion, faith, the existence of God and all that good stuff (Bergman very likely remains king there, though I haven't watched all that much in the grand scheme of things) but The Sunset Limited was ultimately disappointing.

Along with The Sunset Limited, I also watched Rubber (Dupieux, '10).

There are people who feel that Rubber wears out its novelty (killer tire whoa!!) very early on, but I didn't feel that way. I completely bought into the ideas espoused by Depieux very early on and its interesting meta commentary. It also helps that the lead actress, whom the tire seems to be infatuated with, is lovely to look at.

eh, I should have said that it was what Lost was at least hinting at with all the white/black, good/evil,religion/science imagery that it pushed so hard.

I viewed it more along the lines of Paradise Lost, that struggle between God and Satan. Although, I do agree with you on the end
Black should have countered White's ending rant. Having him cower at the end was a weak point and basically shot down most of Black's character. But I did like the fact that Black wasn't really black but grey, being an ex-con.

Paranormal Activity 2

I didn't enjoy it as much as the first one. Granted, the first one wasn't that great, but it was entertaining to see. In 2, the build ups weren't as great or as quickly as in the first so it was a chore watching the same shit over and over again to see if something would happen. The new camera angles were also pretty disappointing, IMO as it didn't feel like there was tension like in the first and it was pretty lame how they recycled some of the build ups from the first. The ending was the most disappointing thing ever, but I like how it tied up the story from the first. Overall, I'd rate it a 5/10. Not that much of an entertaining flick to see, but no regrets in seeing it either.

I just tried watching The Thing Red Line. As some of you know from my previous posts, i have been on a Malick marathon the past few days. I could not watch more than 5 minutes. Not that it was boring or anything. I tried watching some T.V, and could not do it too.

This is all because of The New World.

I'm not sure if i can enjoy anything anymore. I might have reached the height of enjoyment and pleasure. The pinnacle of artistic expression. I went online to read some fan reviews of the new world, and some people were in the same situation. This one reviewer said he saw it when the movie was released. Hasn't been able to enjoy any other movie since then.

God, what have you done malick? 'slits wrist'

I love to watch all films blind like that, is that a good thing?

Hmm I've never seen The New World.. is it really that good? :o

Ofcourse it is..

Black Swan: enjoyed it, will have to force myself to finish watching Requiem for a Dream at some point.

Milk: Sean Penn was great, can't help but feel that the movie whitewashed some of Milk's less desirable qualities, similar to the Ray biopic.

Family Plot: I assume Hitchcock was in full on in it for the money mode but an OK film.

Wow, I tried watching the New World on TV once and thought it was boring as hell. Perhaps I should give it a proper go.

I just watched Animal Kingdom. I don't really know what to think right now, I think I liked it. It definitely reinforced my love for Guy Pearce.

The matriarch of the family was sooo fucking evil. I wanted her to get killed at the end as much as Pope, but I guess that was the point. J killed the so called powerful one in the animal kingdom and he was taking over the weaker ones (Mom and ?Darren?). At least that's what I got out of the end.

Come on, that's just a silly thing to say. There are plenty of other fantastic arthouse films by great directors. Watch Tarkovsky's filmography next then move on to Bergman and Italian neorealism for example. This guy just doesn't know what to look for.

And for a real challenge watch Sátántangó from Béla Tarr. I think it's exactly what you're looking for.

Yeah Weaver is fucking terrifying in this. She deserved supporting actress as much as Leo or Steinfeld.
As for the end sort of:
Same with me. I saw it as a sort of display of the animalistic characteristics of each person. For most of the movie, J acts out of fear of the others and the others act out of fear of being caught or of each other. So it's like the animal kingdom in that each member is afraid of the one above them, but scares the one below them. And then by the end J has stopped fearing everyone else and has become a predator.

just watched THE INSIDER for the first time based on the recommendations in this thread. good show, guys. that was superbulent. definitely my second favorite mann film, HEAT being the first.

russell crowe was fantastic. i want to watch GLADIATOR now.

I think Collateral is definitely worth a look, too; I'd probably put it third for Michael Mann films after Heat and The Insider. The guy can put out a fabulous crime drama when he's on his game. Too bad about Public Enemies and Miami Vice, though I was so looking forward to them both. :-/

Miami Vice is awesome. I like Public Enemies, to a degree, but I certainly understand the hate.

The rest is spot on though.

I would too.

The Insider > Collateral > Heat >>>>>>>>>> Public Enemies > Miami Vice

Any other highly recommended Mann films? The only other one I know of is Ali, which I should probably watch since I love boxing movies.

Really? I was SO looking forward to finally seeing this near-legendary (in certain circles) movie. Then again, I don't think you're as big a fan of exploitation type films as I am, if I remember.

You ever get around to watching The Wild Angels, and what did you think?
Xala. What a weird ending.

The beginning sequence of Ali is amazing. Long montage, great use of Sam Cooke's music. The rest of the movie for me paled in comparison to the doc "When We Were Kings".

if you love boxing movies, check it out though.

Just saw 127 hours the other day. I thought it was damn good. Franco was great in it, I really enjoyed the way boyle shot it actually. I know some people didn't. Only problem was the audience. A group of mid aged people kept on laughing throughout. They called me and my friends out before the movie started because we're teenagers. Can't get over how bad that audience was, almost ruined the movie. Anyway, 8.5/10.

Ah crap, I forgot about that one. Guess that'll be my next film to watch when I have the time.

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!! Watch 8 1/2 instead.

The movie they are making in the movie is the movie you are watching.

My biggest problem with Collateral is that I knew how the entire film was going to play out within the first 5 minutes. It felt like an action movie on rails.

Heat felt slightly unhinged and you didn't know where the hell it was going. The last third really dragged though.

You mean the last third of Heat? If so I agree with you. My problem with Heat is that it does drag. There are so many scenes that are just amazing, and I love the movie overall, but I'm not gonna lie and say I wasn't bored at points.

Goodfellas is an example of a crime epic that held my attention every step of the way, Heat though not so much.

Watched two movies recently.

THE BEAR - It's kind of like a live action version of Bambi, but with bears instead of deer and instead of musical numbers, there are sequences where the bears trip out on mushrooms. Really. I enjoyed it a lot.

MOTHER AND CHILD - An overblown drama with excessive length that presents a few interesting moral questions about childbirth and the rights of parents but it's a little silly at times. Great cast. though: Naomi Watts, Anette Benning, Samuel L. Jackson, etc.

Tangled
Wow, just wow. Best Disney film in a long, long, long time. Pretty much loved every second of it. Magical and downright hysterical in parts. I'd go as far as to say that this should have beaten Toy Story 3 for best animated picture last year. I seriously hope this is the Disney that we will continue to see from here on out, it's a return to form.

I saw 8 1/2 a while back when my uncle and I went on a Fellini splurge. Great stuff. AND TOO BAD, I'M GOING TO WATCH IT ANYWAY.

Beginning, as was said above, was awesome too, but the rest is pretty meh.

Yeah beginning montage is one of the best things I've seen from Mann, and the ending was really cool too. Loved the music.

Collateral aint got shit on Heat...

and you should watch Last of Mohicans and Thief (every Mann fan should watch this movie. Along with Miami Vice show it was kind of the origins of his style and shit), Blader.

Wow. I mean I like Malick films, but they're niche for me. It takes a lot more than that to satisfy my movie appetite.

edit: The use of Wagner in The New World was brilliant, though. Until I knew who it was I thought James Horner had turned a corner on his composing career :\

Man on Fire

Good movie, however it was way too long; taking close to an hour and a half to set things up was incredibly unneeded. Also wasn't a fan of how the on screen text and subtitles were done. Overall though I did enjoy it.

Ghostbusters

First time I've ever seen it, and I can see why it has such a following, really enjoyed it and it was funny to see where all these quotes I had heard beforehand came from.

Shooter

This was just bad, some of the sniper bits were good but they were few and far between

Resident Evil Afterlife - Would you like some action with your action? It was to the extreme with its action and I loved it. Like all the throwbacks and nods to the games too

Clash of the Titans (2010)

Wtf, critics? That movie was great, with a lot of atmosphere. I expected a slighty braindead action romp, instead I got a well-thought-out remake.

Seriously, only Roger Ebert left to trust.

I forgive you your positive ruling on episode 3, my lord
