So I enjoy the show White Collar and someone suggested watching The Sting. Great movie, now I'm looking for more long con movies. Help!

And I'm envious of you watching Children of Men for the first time. Honestly one of my favorites ever, not just Sci-Fi.

So good. I walked out of the theatre literally stunned.

Wouldn't call it Sci-Fi. It's just a work of fiction, like most movies. Fucking great though, Clive Owen was perfectly cast.

Buried. Hated the ending but pretty intense overall.

Not a fan of depressive endings. Snake scene was awesome

I thought it was sci-fi for sure. But I have a pretty loose definition of science fiction.

Un Prophete / A Prophet 9/10

I woud have given it a 10/10, if it wasn't for the musical "montages". My problem was that, the movie was very raw, real and minimalist. No music until that point, which to me was perfect. I wish they had kept it like that throughout. I am very strict and critical when it comes to music, so this irked me.

p.s when Malik wore the suit 'swoon'

Got a unlimited cinema pass last week, so I'm going to start getting my monies worth!

Last week I watched:

Kings Speech - really good, and terrific acting from Colin Firth. I can see why he won an Oscar. Geoffrey Rush was also excellent.

Animal Kingdom - again, another excellent film. I highly recommend everyone to go see it.

Paul - film was pretty meh. I didn't hate it, but at the same time I didn't really find it funny. I would wait for the DVD if you want to see this.

Next weeks schedule:

The Adjustment Bureau
Unknown
Rango (if I have time)

I just watched this last night and I have to say, it definitely was powerful. For someone that has been a bit ambivalent towards whaling and the killing of dolphins in Japan (Especially seeing as I have lived there and actually eaten whale on one instance, unaware) I wasn't expecting much of this going in. But after watching it I feel like I was being really naive all along, this is definitely something that everyone should see.

Children of Men was set in the future and its plot required a sci-fi device. So it's definitely, squarely sci-fi.

The Darjeeling Limited.

Dir. by Wes Anderson starring Owen Wilson, Jason Schwartzman, and Adrian Brody. One of my favorite movies that I have seen this year. Camera work is great, a staple of Wes Anderson's works, and the dialogue is smart and quirky without trying to be a comedy. Beautiful imagery, a fun story, and a wonderful cast make this film a no-brainer to recommend.

At times, I claim that this is my favourite movie. Regardless it's extremely underrated in my opinion, even amongst Wes fans.

It really is. But when I still perfer Rushmore and The Royal Tenenbaums. Also probably Life Aquatic.. Damn

The Stuff - such an awesome cast for such a cheesy Blob ripoff. so many great lines and moments. good times

Straight to Hell - yea, this was pretty enjoyable. shane macgowan, joe strummer, elvis costello, dennis hopper and jim fn jarmusch in a crazy ass take on spaghetti westerns

Robin Hood (2010)

I enjoyed it...the name of the movie is deceiving, it's nothing about the legend but a prequel before the legend of Robin Hood...

Paul (watched it Friday night).
Surprisingly good. Definitely stays on par with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, it's much better than the trailers make it look.

I saw grown ups. I laughed, it's a good family movie. It actually made me sad, I miss playing basketball.

Saw this for the first time. What a bad movie. And I don't mean that in the cool way.
This most definitely goes in the so bad it's good category though. Watch Commando next if you haven't already.

You raised my hopes. Don't play with my emotions man.

Just watched Megamind. I thought it was genuinely funny, some nice slapstick humor in there. Nothing spectacular, but it's a really good time. There was so much negativity for this movie last year, sometimes I feel my tag should be shared around by most of this forum. :P

Which should I watch.

I've still only seen Shadows and Minnie and Moskowitz. Should I watch something like Husbands or Chinese Bookie or Opening Night before the two listed above?

I wish I hadn't waited so long to see this. Kurosawa and Mifune is such a legendary combo. Beautiful film (and Criterion delivers a fantastic release, as usual).

So I watched Scott Pilgrim about 3 times this weekend and pretty much solidified my love for the movie in my mind. (if only the twins had dialog and... character).

Shame the comics don't really do anything for me.

Yeah, I decided that I'm going in chronological order:

Faces
Husbands
A Woman Under the Influence
The Killing of a Chinese Bookie
Opening Night

Might possibly watch his other films but don't know yet.

I've seen it before but just recently added this to my collection. Finally had the spare money to get it, love this movie so much.

Yeah, I don't get why it was slammed so hard. The "sounds like owls fucking" line made me lol.

I just watched Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief. What a misguided concept and execution for a movie. It had its moments but the whole movie felt cheap and somewhat dull. Harry Potter light on the production side which is strange coming from Chris Columbus who laid the groundwork on those movies.

Hey same here. I've been meaning to buy this for years and I only just got around to it. So good.

Le Samourai: Very cool, but the police work was hilarious. Having the witnesses just sit right in front of the suspects to identify them, the giant fucking bug, tracking a guy with little light bulbs on a map (seems to me if he wanted to get away he could just go where there are no light bulbs).

Sweet Smell Of Success: Good news: totally fucking awesome movie. Bad news: another Blu-ray to buy.

"Haunters" or "Psychic"

Pretty cool Korean movie about a guy that can control the people he sees who meets a man that is immune to his power. I think it's best described as an action/sci-fi thriller with equal parts Push and Unbreakable. The movie was very enjoyable and I'd definitely recommend it.

I think it's also worth note, this is probably the only Korean movie I've ever seen with non-Korean, non-Asians, having a large role (or any at all lol). They played the protag's best friend's, Ali, from Turkey and, Boba, from Ghana. It was nice to see some diversity in a Korean flick, though I could have done without the stereotypical, coonery (Looking down the barrel of a misfiring guy? Really Korea? Not even coming original with the racism? I guess the classics are classics for a reason, eh?).

Another complaint would be with the length and lack of character development or well... substance at all. The movie is over two hours yet was lacking some basic exposition and you learn very little about either character (considering the length of the movie). The exact same face-off between the two sides happens over and over with nothing new being shown and very little changing, other than the setting, to make it different from the last face-off. I'm fine with watching a long movie but not when it repeats the same set-pieces over and over without adding anything new.

A final minor niggle is with the sometimes questionable quality of the special effects. As a whole the movie looks great, but there are a few moments the effects came across as pretty amateurish.

All in all it was worth watching, but I have to say this is the rare movie I feel could be made infinitely better by having an American remake.

Ya ya, amazing.

On my part:

Bad Guy (Kim Ki-Duk, 2001):
The plot left me a bit "WTF?!", but i loved it anyway. (which, thinking about it, it's kinda meta-artsy itself)
It's amazing, just like every movie this director does. Period.

Need a quick recommendation for tonight out of:

There Will Be Blood, Taxi Driver, Fight Club, Alien, A Clockwork Orange, LA Confidential

I've seen Fight Club before

Can't go wrong with any of them, really. I'd vote for Alien, but try and watch all of them.

An Angel At My Table - haunting film. its a film that makes you want to create art and never show it to anyone. it is a shame that we can say "they don't make 'em like this anymore" about a movie filmed in 1990. possibly one of the best films i've ever seen.

Easy A - didn't live up to the GAF hype but still a entertaining comedy
Skyline - popcorn sci fi, was sort of let down, and that ending
the humans should have all died
Due Date - girlfriend wanted to watch this, it was alright

I watched "A Dirty Shame"

Cheesy, ridiculous, raunchy, but funny as hell. I've always been told Waters's movies are pretty raunchy, but I wasn't sure which one to start out with.

Agreed with jarosh that Taxi Driver is the best, but Alien, A Clockwork Orange, and LA Confidential are all great as well. If you've never seen TD, though, it's required viewing; get on it!

Edit: And Faces is awesome; a final shot that's burned into my brain! A Woman Under the Influence is definitely good, but I find that as time goes on, I remember the performances more than the movie.
