Agreed with jarosh that Taxi Driver is the best, but Alien, A Clockwork Orange, and LA Confidential are all great as well. If you've never seen TD, though, it's required viewing; get on it!

Edit: And Faces is awesome; a final shot that's burned into my brain! A Woman Under the Influence is definitely good, but I find that as time goes on, I remember the performances more than the movie.

I noticed that There Will Be Blood isn't included in your list.....

I watched "A Dirty Shame"

Cheesy, ridiculous, raunchy, but funny as hell. I've always been told Waters's movies are pretty raunchy, but I wasn't sure which one to start out with.

Pink Flamingos, Desperate Living, and Female Trouble. Watch em' all now!

It's a tough cookie; I was the biggest supporter of the movie for the longest time, but I'm not as sure of how I feel about it lately.

Edit: And I think that, either way, it's in a lower echelon than any of the films that I listed.

It's Always Fair Weather (1955)
Guess I'm not a screen musical fan. Didn't enjoy this much at all. It wasn't really bad, but it was focused so much more on being an attraction than it was being a narrative piece. And being that it's 100 minutes, all of the attractions feel drawn out and lose their excitement. Men tap dancing with trash lids? Pretty fun. Men tap dancing with trash lids for what seemed like a full half hour? Not so much.
Still good to watch as a historic part of the rise of cinemascope and color.

Jacobs Ladder - Pretty awesome film. Definitely near the top.

Session 9 - Not gonna win any Oscars but was entertaining.

The last of the crazy people (Achard, 2006):
Good and very dilated drama.
The use of silences and sudden "storms", reminded me of Haneke, though maybe less masterfully crafted (?).

The Fighter

Pretty great movie, it got a little Rocky-ish at the end which annoyed me.

Amy Adams really impressed me. Showed a sense of grittiness, I felt like she was just about to let loose.
Felt like she didn't quite get "there". But earned some respect from me for sure. She's also quite attractive. :P

Christian Bale killed it as usual. Amazing performance.

Random pervy question: have they started censoring Adams' nips? Because I saw it opening weekend and you could totally see them, but I've talked to people who said you couldn't see them.
Uh, to balance it out, what did you think of Melissa Leo?

:lol how did I forget to post about this. No joke, one of my personal notes from watching was "BOXING SONG. nice."

so good. also of course the rolling skate dance and the fact it's pretty downbeat help it stand out for me.

Just watched Megamind. I thought it was genuinely funny, some nice slapstick humor in there. Nothing spectacular, but it's a really good time. There was so much negativity for this movie last year, sometimes I feel my tag should be shared around by most of this forum. :P
I'll second this. While I usually hate CGI movies, this one really was fun. It's story is predictable (mostly), but how it's pieced together made the movie .. yeah, a good time, in lack of a better wording :)

How did You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger compare to Allen's other films...I'm a fan, I even loved Vicky Christina Barcelona, which I believe most most people would consider a lesser film.

Oh and this is unrelated, but has anyone in here seen Dog Days? If so, what'd you think. A buddy mine recommended it to me.

This popped up on Netflix instant recently so, being a fan of vampire movies, decided to give it a go.

Pleasantly surprising movie. The characters are kind of thin (and Dafoe is at his hammiest at parts) but it's a really neat little premise with some nice action and creature effects. The first half is stronger than the second (when it turns into more of a typical horror/action film) and unfortunately loses a little bit of its moody atmosphere that it spends a good while building up at the start but I enjoyed it nonetheless.

Vicky Christina Barcelona, I think, has secretly made its way into Woody's greatest film of the last decade even over Match Point. You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger, while not greatly original, is a great round table of terrific performances and is once again, another overlooked powerful chapter that is like how Match Point was to Crimes and Misdemeanors as is this film is to Husbands and Wives.

So I have come into possession of a box-set containing the following films:

Beat the Devil (John Huston)
The Chase (Arthur Ripley)
Quicksand (Irving Pichel)
The Big Combo (Joseph H. Lewis)
Kansas City Confidential (Phil Karlson)
Trapped (Richard Fleischer)
They Made Me a Criminal (Busby Berkeley)
Borderline (William A. Seiter)
Shock (Alfred L. Werker)
The Man Who Cheated Himself (Felix E. Feist)
The Second Woman (James V. Kern)
The Great Flamarion (Anthony Mann)

Can anybody vouch for any of these movies as being particularly worthwhile and worth a watch in the coming weeks?

Watch Like ASAP
The Big Combo
KC Confidential

Worth:
Quicksand
Shock
Beat the Devil
The Chase

Not
Man Who Cheated Himself
Trapped
Borderline
They Made Me a Criminal

Haven't Seen:
The Great Flamarion
Second Woman

though I think the few i didn't like have some cool stuff in them. especially the ending of trapped. all these films are pretty short so i'd say watch them all.

Watched this this morning and it was better than I could have possible expected. I was going to wait for the next half off sale to get the Criterion Blu-ray, but after seeing it I had to immediately preorder. My character-limited Criticker review:

Between this and Murmur of the Heart, I don't think I'd be remiss in saying that Malle may be the greatest director of children of all time. He captures adolescence in such profoundly elegant ways, at once subtle and so clearly universal. And even with a backdrop that reaches a terribly moving conclusion, Malle manages to avoid melodrama and instead imbues the film with life and warmth and sly humor. The scene in which the kids watch Chaplin's "The Immigrant" is an all-time great.

95/100

She did a great job. I hated her throughout the movie. Well-intentioned, but generally a terrible mother.

I saw nips, they were nice. Haha.

I've been renting Criterions from I Love Video just so I could judge if I should buy them from the next Barnes and Noble half off sale. Here in a couple of minutes I am going to watch Black Orpheus. I am for sure going to get it during the sale. I would otherwise just purchase it but can't really afford to buy these movies not on sale. I've gone through 4 Malle films now and this is my 2nd favorite. I will probably hit Lacombe, Lucien or the Lovers next go around from the video shop.

Was looking for a movie similar to Legends of the fall. in most of my searches this came up :

A River Runs Through It

I guess ill give it a try.

That you mention David Lynch is not a coincidence. Persona was a big influence for Mulholland Dr. Not only does it share similar theme and characters, Lynch paid directly homage visualy in a scene where the faces of the women merge.

I can definitely see it now. At first I was thinking more along the lines of Inland Empire with the close-ups, but you're right about Mulholland Drive

i have a hard time with malle for some reason - lacombe, lucien really wow'd me, but the rest of that collection and especially the documentary collection have left me cold. i should re-watch au reviour les enfants

Over the past week, watched for the first time ever:

Se7en - WOW. Loved the chase scene, seven sins, Morgan, Brad, Spacey. 9.5/10.

Interview with a Vampire - Probably the best vampire movie I've seen, Tom Cruise was awesome in it. 9/10.

Fight Club - Unique/weird, similat to sixth sense but better. 9.5/10.

Silence of the lambs - Marvellous acting from Hopkins and Foster. The plot/story wasn't all that. So,dont hate me for this... 7/10.

Man, 90's movies were the bomb. Such a different feel to them. Next up, Leaving Las Vegas.

How did you survived that long without those movies ?

I'm really afraid of the movies you didn't saw yet .... i mean .... you saw the back to the future trilogy, right ?

Personally, a lot of it is catching up because I'm younger. Never seen Se7en. Probably because it came out in 95, when I was 3. Silence of the Lambs: tried to watch when I was about 12. Scared the shit out of me. I'll revisit it one day.
I have seen BTTF, of course. But there are too many good movies that exist, hard to watch all of them.

A River Runs Through It

Tried to enjoy this....I was not bored, it just didn't have anything. If it wasn't for the scenery I would have hated it.

Watching Big Man Japan.

Music is great. Performance is deadpan in a pleasant way. Pretty cool. Oh, and "Squeezy Baddie" suplexing skyscrapers is fucking rad.

Son of Rambow is next up.

Hot Tube Time Machine - Watched this on this past Saturday. I really really enjoyed. I was surprised because people generally poo-poo'ed it. It's a great dumb comedy.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - I literally just finished watching this. I spent the last 5 months slowly making my way through all 6 books (finished the last one last night) and decided to watch the movie tonight which I had ordered from Amazon a month ago. While I was slightly put off by some of the changes, the movie was outstanding as an abbreviated version of the series. I will say that I probably wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as I did if I had skipped the books. I'm glad I didn't catch the movie when it was playing in theaters (almost did!).

Wasabi

Solid action comedy. Needed to be tighter across the board. Could have been so much better with a better script and director. Jean Reno was great in this though.

Not good with movie reviews, but I just wanna say that The Inside Job was one of the best goddamn movies I have seen this year.

Wow.

"Waiting for Superman". Redboxed it the other night, wow! Great documentary on our school system in the US and why it's failing miserably. Inside job will be the next flick I redbox this week.

Hadn't heard about this movie. Added it to my Netflix queue.. its gonna be a looong wait though lol

I hope you enjoy Inside Job as much as I did.

Watched a bunch of movies/documentaries lately:

wN7MZ.jpg

Beer Wars-Interesting documentary about the rise of small-time craft beers going up against the giants of the beer industry. Recommended if you like beer.

pgZqV.jpg

Tin Cup-Even though I'm not a huge fan of kevin costner, I liked this movie quite a bit.

6yE4D.jpg

A Gentleman's Game-Great golf movie, a bit slow and strange at some points, but I enjoyed it(although I'm easy to entertain).

FNfqh.jpg

Fat Head-If you saw Supersize Me, I highly recommend watching this as it goes against pretty much all of what it says. Very interesting and it'll make you do more research if you're diet conscious.

liFh2.jpg

When We Left Earth-Holy shit this was amazing. I've always had an admiration and appreciation of NASA and all the people that made all of the space travel we've done possible, but this documentary really made me appreciate it a billion times more. Not to mention the composer of the music did a really kickass job, get him to help out with Mass Effect 3's soundtrack :). At the same time its really sad watching how much we did back then and now the Space Shuttle is just about retired. If you have any interest in early space travel, you have to watch this.

Agree about Dafoe and this was indeed a pleasant surprise. Most of the films problems come from the low budget and a few missteps in the characterization/acting, but I was very impressed.

What drew me in the most was how elaborate this fictional future is. Any created world that manages to raise dozens of moral problems within it's own design that are compelling and even relate strongly to reality is something world experiencing. This movie pulls that off better than most.
