George Washington is an excellent movie.

Yep.

It's no Pineapple Express or Your Highness, though. David Gordon Green really embraced all the potential of cinema with those.

if we are just picking movies My Winnepeg or Ballast or Chop or Standard Operating Procedure were the best movies of the year. Reader should have won the Oscar. Didn't Happy Go Lucky release that year also? DA would dream to have made that film.

2008 was a pretty good year in movies at any rate.

Haven't seen My Winnipeg or Standard Operating Procedure. What is Chop? Do you mean Chop Shop? If so, that was 2007.

But I thought The Wrestler was better than Happy-Go-Lucky or Ballast. It really is a way better film than you give it credit for.

oh i was saying they were the best films of the year. i obviously don't think wrestler is in that conversation ;)

i think my winnipeg might be 2007 as well. i don't think it hit theaters proper until 2008 or something.

My Winnipeg's on streaming on Netflix. I plan on checking it out over the summer. Did you mean Chop Shop by Chop, by the way, or was that referencing something else that I haven't heard of? Because Chop Shop is pretty fucking excellent and could totally compete with The Wrestler had they been released in the same year.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7fTnTP49FW0

The writing and acting in The Wrestler is seriously great. The movie is great just on the virtue of those alone.

double Edit: By the way, I watched Whale Rider (Niki Caro, 2002) today. I was rather unimpressed by it. Strip away the cultural facade and you have a movie that falls pretty comfortably into predictable Hollywood formula and stereotypes. The girl playing Paikea was a good little actress, though. She's actually about my age, these days; here's to hoping that she can get some good work now that she's a little older, as I think she showed a lot of potential.

I watched Crazy Heart the other day. For some reason I expected it to be gut wrenching and painful, but I kept wondering when some conflict or crisis was going to kick in. Once in a while something would happen and I'd think "Uh oh, here it comes..." but it would just pass. In the end it did go to some dark places, but for the most part it felt like a warm 'n' fuzzy softball, kinda reminded me of The World's Fastest Indian in that way. The important thing is, I really liked it. Can't remember the last time I saw something with Jeff Bridges that I didn't like.

Hey, I watch anything, man. And yeah, those three movies are all great; I think I'd put Chop Shop at the top, though.

Edit: And the short film, Plastic Bag, that he did with Herzog is fucking excellent and on Youtube.

Paranormal Activity - 4 out of 5

I thought I was going to hate this based on all the stuff I've read about it from GAF in the box office threads around the time when the sequel came out. I don't think noises and moving doors make for a scary film but there were some really well done scenes in the movie that made it really fucking creepy. The first scene I'm talking about is when
they find the tile in the attic out of place and the boyfriend heads up to recover something stuck in the insulation.
There's the whole thing with the girlfriend freaking out below while this moron is in the attic and then the thing he finds up there is totally messed up. It's a really tense scene. The ouija board scene was also well done and I wasn't expecting the movie to go down that totally evil road. I figured maybe noises, moving stuff, shadows, and maybe a ghost here or there but using occult stuff made it such a stronger horror film.

I really want to see the sequel which I've heard is much better than the first film.

The Host - 3 out of 5

Korean monster movie that isn't quite horror. It's more of a comedy. Fun movie. It wasn't particularly strong as a either a comedy or horror film but it so wacky and over the top that is ws never boring.

Frozen - 4 out of 5

Really well done horror survival movie with some really great scenes. Three kids get stranded on a lift at a ski resort and try to survive the night while they begin to freeze to death. I didn't find the characters to be annoying like I would in a typical horror movie with young kids. The actors did a fine job. It's a really creepy movie because it feels like something that could happen to you. Getting stranded out in the cold dangling from the air while getting blasted by hail and other frozen weather seems all too real. The
wolf attack scene
is just fucking disturbing. It makes me think of a clip I saw years ago on the internet
of a guy getting eaten alive by lions
while his family watched from the car. It was really fucked up and sad. Same thing happens in this movie. My only complaint is that this movie has a really awful soundtrack. They play some really over dramatic corny music during the tense scenes and it just ruins the feeling of it. Other than that they did a great job with everything else. It's definitely worth watching.

The Thing - 5 out of 5

Incredible horror movie. I've seen clips and I've seen bits of the movie in the past but I never watched it from beginning to end until recently. Kurt Russell is a total bad ass in this movie. Probably the first movie I've seen with him in it that I've enjoyed. Monster effects still look pretty good. What really makes this movie shine though is the location. It looks perfect. I've heard they're planning a remake and if it weren't for the mosnter effects looking just okay I don't see why anyone would want to bother watching a new version of it.

I go to the theater on my own sometimes. Never really struck me as something to be self-conscious about.

Sounds about right.
I go to the cinema by myself all the time after realising a long time ago that there was no point in going with someone else only to sit in the dark not talking.

Prequel and it should have completed filming by now.

The Thing remake is definitely done filming although they did do some reshoots AFAIK.

It'll be out in October. Saw a teaser at NYCC and interviewed the cast, looks like it could be some fun. Director seemed smart.

I hated it. All that build up and barely any story at all, never pays off.

But seriously, The Thing is amazing.

Also, if you need a reason to see the prequel....

Make Way for Tomorrow - very sad movie. I can see the influence this movie had on Tokyo Story, but I think I liked Tokyo Story better, overall. Still, this is a movie where you will want to call your parents just to talk to after watching.
In a Lonely Place - Bogart made this movie pretty awesome.
Ace in the Hole - Kirk Douglas in his prime. Need I say more?

Going through icheckmovies.com's top film-noir list. So good.

I've watched a few movies in the past two days or so.

Psycho 3.5/5
Across the Universe 2.5/5 (but the sound track is more like 5/5)
Black Swan 3/5 (2nd time watching it, don't watch it two times)
Winter's Bone 4.5/5 (Fucking fantastic)
Exit Through the Gift Shop 4.5/5

Mr. Klein ***, wonderful story and skillfully directed by losey. of course it never reaches his "the go-between" but it's really good. would make a good (long) double feature with army of shadows

Sunday In the County ***, touching without being sentimental. everything i love about contemporary french film.

scream 4 **. its weird watching this movie without any connection to the new boys and girls who get killed. but it's fun and has thick gooey blood.

Okay, who was it that said " Session 9" was one of the best horror films?

Filthy lies! It's boring and there was barely any tension. The twist was predictable right from the beginning.

4/10 it's only slightly better than that even more boring Paranormal Activity.

Rear Window - Hitchcock, 1954 ::
Rewatched the classic Rear Window for probably the fifth time. It was once my favorite Hitchock (not anymore) and it's still a fantastic piece of cinema. The direction, cinematography and narrative are great, the tension towards the end is super high and the themes Hitchcock explores are very engaging. But above all else.. Grace Kelly looks stunning. When she firsts appears on screen.. *swoon* 9/10

One of the most dividing films I've ever seen. I personally didn't like it.

Watched The Proposition. Really good movie. So glad it ended the way it did and not the way that I thought it was going to. Highly recommended.

Was I the only one who got a Heart of Darkness vibe from the middle sections?

Blue Valentine
Fantastic acting and great cinematography. This movie pretty much destroyed me. Some of it just really hit home. Highly recommended, but not something to watch if you're looking to have a good time.

Seven Samurai - Really great. Mifune and Shimura were very entertaining. It was surprisingly funny in parts. The ending was strong and the stuff about the ronin and farmers was interesting.
This was my first Kurosawa film, what should I see next? And is The Magnificent Seven worth watching?

Yojimbo for more samurai action, or Ikiru for something non-samurai.

The Passion of Joan of Arc (Carl Theodor Dreyer, 1928)

A wholly unique film. Uniqueness does not create quality, necessary, but it can grab the mind and attention in a way that something more well-done but less original does not. I'm not sure if I'm prepared to call the film great, though I think that it is excellent and wholly deserving of the study that it's received. Maria Falconetti's acting alternates between typical over-the-top silent film acting and truly subtle flicks of the eyes and mouth that makes her character rather fascinating. The rest of the acting actually follows a similar course; some characters are so over-the-top as to be downright grotesque (certainly an intended effect on Dreyer's part and an attempt to capture Joan's perspective of them, though I don't think this entirely mitigates the moments of caricature), while others are very subtle (such as the priest practicing deception upon her in order to make her confess; these performances were the more effective ones, I think). There are also some great pieces of imagery, such as the birds landing upon the cross (cheapened somewhat by the predictable shot of them flying away as she is about to be burned), or the shot of the baby turning away from suckling its mothers breast and looking at the condemned Joan before turning disinterestedly back to the nipple, or the shot of the crucifix engulfed with the smoke of the pyre that is burning her. Actually, I'm prepared to say that the most worthwhile part of this movie is likely the last third; we get a much more human and nuanced portrayal of the English and the most effective parts of Falconetti's performance, as well as some striking poetic images. So, all-in-all, through all of this rambling, I suppose I'd rate the movie as very interesting but a bit mixed overall. I must admit that my opinion on this one may change with time, as it is lingering with me in a very interesting but somewhat unsettling way.

Best Worst Movie--Saw this on Rogers On Demand and took a chance with it. It's a documentary ostensibly about the making of Troll 2. but it's more about the stars of the film experiencing the renewed interest in what looks like a pretty horrid cinematic disaster being 'rediscovered' as a cult classic.

Overall, I really enjoyed it. The stunned pleasure of the lead actor--who is now working as a dentist--being cheered by crowds at screenings--was heartwarming. But the film also shows the darker side, of scenes of mental illness among the cast, and a director who doesn't fully understand how hipster irony works.

And no, I have not seen Troll 2. What I saw here was enough for me. It looks horrendous.

You need to see it. It IS horrendous. That's the point.

I'll second this post. Excellent choices. Ikiru is probably my favorite movie of all-time. Though you really can't go wrong with too many of Kurosawa's movies.

Agreed. I couldn't get over how some of my friends loved this but yet I hated it. I couldn't really understand that.

Kurosawa's got at least a dozen films that are excellent and should be watched by everyone, but if I had to narrow it down to five (other than Seven Samurai which you've already seen), they'd be:

Rashomon
Throne of Blood
High & Low
Ikiru
Ran

But he was more prolific than most of the other all-time great directors, so there's also: Stray Dog, Yojimbo, Sanjuro, The Bad Sleep Well, The Hidden Fortress, Red Beard, Dersu Uzala, Kagemusha, etc. etc. which are all worth watching.

I say watch that one and work your way up.

In the annals of unbelievably bad movies, many of which are plain boring garbage, Troll 2 definitely fits the so-bad-it's-entertaining category. Fun garbage. Of course I do understand that deliberately watching terrible movies is not for everyone, but if you're the right kind of viewer you'll enjoy it.
Me and a few friends love watching so bad they're good movies, MST3K style. For some reason we still haven't done this one. Gonna have to fix that.

Hobo With a Shotgun

Eh, I like cheesy gore movies, but this was bad imo. The only thing that kept me awake was the gore. I chuckled a few times.

I'm not trying to sound like a movie snob like that snowman guy
I kid :D
, I like guilty pleasure movies myself.

2.5/5 I would say for me.

p.s The Plague <3

Super (James Gunn, 2011)

The trailer kinda made it looks like a indie-offbeat-comedic version of Kick-Ass, but well..it really isn't. Super is pretty dark and does a good job of making the viewer feel uncomfortable throughout pretty much the entire film. The humor is deep black, the themes are grim and the violence is shockingly realistic and brutal at times. Rainn Wilson is great and is able to handle the dramatic and comedic emotions of his character with relative ease. Ellen Page is surprisingly funny as the overeager sidekick and the same goes for antagonist drug dealer Kevin Bacon. Too bad the writing is a bit all over the place and kinda falls apart near the ending. I did enjoy it though and could really appreciate this dark take on the superhero films. 7.5/10

Saw Catfish.
I saw people almost killing each other about it being real of fake.
Personally, even though i actually think it's fake, i found it very entertaining and weird, believable, too.
I mean, it was a little too perfect at times, to be real; Though there definitely is people that strange around, so..
