Watched Redbelt last night. I thought it was really good, outside of the abrupt ending. It's basically a character study, and Chiwetel Ejiofor is phenomenal in the lead role. I almost want to get back into martial arts now.

Last ten:

Ali: Fear Eats The Soul (Fassbinder, Rainer Werner; 1974; Germany) - (95/100)
Chloe in the Afternoon (Rohmer, Eric; 1972; France) - (95/100)

I'm not watching Babylon AD untill the director's cut is out. Fox cut alot :
USA:90 min | France:101 min | 161 min (Director's Cut)
Holy cellulose at the difference! I'll definitely give it another turn when that comes out, then, thanks for the head's up.

Yeah I'm not watching it until then. Which is a shame, because I always like Sci Fi and dude is a cool actor.

Holy shit. Is there a Directors cut coming? That's insane cutting that much.

The British Blu-ray release is marketed as an Extended Edition. I'm not sure of the runtime, region coding or anything though. Since it's a FOX film I assume it's region locked.

I would like to see the director's cut of Babylon AD. I could sense a decent movie somewhere beneath all the Vin Diesel and the mess that Fox left when I saw it in theatres. And though I've never seen La Haine, apparently it's nothing to scoff at.

And are you referrring to the .com or .org Criterion forum? Presumably the latter; I've found it to be nearly indespensible for when I want to read up on a particular film or just discover something completely new to me, but man, is it ever imposing to post there. The scholarly, encyclopedic knowledge of many of the longtime members makes me feel flat-out stupid most of the time.
Yeah, .org; I've seen you posting there. And I feel exactly the same way-- the level of discussion that goes on at that site is ridiculous (but always really fascinating). I post (rarely) as hot_locket, btw.

Yep, pure David Mamet awesomeness. Loved it except the last bits

You've seen Spartan right?

Watched Taken.

Excellent film. Pierre Morel is a director to look out for now IMO. District B-13 was an incredibly fun and beautiful film to watch and this one is no different with the emphasis less on style more on revenge. Liam Neeson's character was just simply awesome

Great movie. It was nice to see Michael K. Williams and Amy Ryan (from The Wire)
I always thought Williams scars weren't real and just for Omar but they are and he nearly died. :o

I didn't realise Ben Affleck directed it until I watched the special features. How come Ben has a perfectly normal voice but Casey's is weird?

Gone Baby Gone was adapted from a book written by Dennis Lehane who coincidently has written for The Wire. I'll definitely read his books.

i have just heard nothing but fantastic things about it, and i want to know if it's as good as i hear. i hear comparisons to primer as far as low-budget, great time-travel movies are concerned, and the crazy bandaged up guy from the trailer just gives me the willies.

i finally got around to seeing let the right one in, forgetting sarah marshall, and man on wire in the past few days, so i'm playing catch-up with 2008, and timecrimes is now at the top of my list.

Animation Looks pretty corner cutting, but I am downloading now.

Anyways heres my list:

Schindlers List - This should be shown at school instead of reading out of a textbook. What a movie

Aliens HD - Never saw it as a child, and am glad I didn't. Visuals are important and it looks great.

The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly - I am going to watch it in the morning.

Grosse Pointe Blank - Same as Good, Bad, Ugly

I am really interested in seeing Dear Zachary: A letter to a son about his father

I saw Schindler in school :D

ontopic: I saw The Mist with a few friends, it was okay. Hated the main guy and his kid though and the cg and other things.. meh..and and and and

Don't get too hyped up for it. Its good but very predictable and not on the same level as Primer.

I'm a sucker for time travel movies and this does a very good job with delivering a fun and intricate plot, but you can see the plot twists coming a mile off.

Mummy 3 - horrible.
Max Payne - horrible.
Babylon AD - horrible.
Gran Torino - ehh.
Taken - awesome.
Transporter 3 - horrible.
Zack and Miri make a porno - ehh.

A great documentary. It gives a really rare insight into day to day life in Baghdad and the youth culture of the city, and puts a human face on victims of the war without getting overly preachy or sentimental. Also, it's about a metal band, so that's cool too. See it!

I just watched Happy-Go-Lucky.

Good watch, the scenes with Poppy and Scott are transfixing. One of the better feel-good films of last year.

This week I saw:

The Wrestler

Really dug this movie, Rourke was amazing in it I haven't really seen him in anything else ( don't hit me I've never seen Sin City)but his character got to me... maybe because he reminds of certain people Im close to and party because well it was a sad story to begin with. Either way it was an amazing movie that has stuck with me ( in my head) all week.

P.s: Tomei :O

The Assassination of Jessie James By the Coward Robert Ford

Just finished this movie and I have to say I came away very impressed all the actors were great ( especially Afleck and Rockwell) and the music and pacing were perfect. It was also quite a beautiful movie.. just gorgeously shot. I might have to pick this up on BRD for a second viewing.

Sneakers

Old movie that Ive seen a few times but had not seen in a while.. not gonna win any awards but I love it and its fun.

Is it me or were movies filmed in this era... I dunno Magical...

I tried to watch this, but I just couldn't get past the first 15 minutes; it was more annoying than endearing, to me. Does it get any better or should I just not bother?

has anyone seen timecrimes yet? i'm desperate. . .
It's pretty good, although you might find yourself frustrated with the main character once in a while. It won't change your life or anything, but it's fun to watch this man get into worse and worse trouble by his own hand while growing more dangerous and selfish at the same time.

It does indeed get better, the highlight of the movie are undeniably the scenes between poppy and scott (driving instructor), and they keep getting more interesting.

pineapple express. this was a total disappointment, didn't enjoy it at all. the only good part was probably the chase scene: 'i can see through my leg hole' :lol

Since when do people broadcast piracy on this board? And of a small, art house documentary no less.

WTF dude.

The OT thrives on piracy. Without it there would be no music threads, no Photoshop threads, and a much smaller number of posts in this particular thread (especially in awards season).

Watched Shoot 'em Up last night on Cinemax (I already own the Blu-Ray) and it's still such an awesome, yet corny movie. I have no idea why I keep laughing at the cheesy one-liners, but still do.

Just finished watching this on NetFlix. I really liked it. Good pacing and atmosphere. Even though ending was pretty obvious, it was still every enjoyable to witness.

Watched Dead Snow earlier this week, which is the splatter film with NAZI ZOMBIES that there was a thread about sometime ago here on gaf.

wiki said:
Dead Snow (Norwegian Død snø) is an upcoming Norwegian horror/comedy film, due for general release in 2009. The US premiere is to be held at the Sundance Film Festival. [1]

The plot of the film is set around a group of Norwegian teenagers who go away for a snowmobiling vacation. They come across a box of cursed gold in the cabin they are staying in. Unfortunately the area they are staying in was used by the Nazis in the German occupation of Norway during World War II, and the gold belonged to them. As a result undead Nazi-Germany soldiers come back to reclaim their gold.

Fantastic film. Anyone who gets a chance to see it really should. It's very funny, but then again it's also very Norwegian with some of the jokes probably not being recognized by any of you foreign ppls. But I still would say you need to see it. It doesn't take itself seriously and never draws a joke out too long. money well spent.

Tokyo Drifter

The yakuza genre simply couldn't hope to contain Suzuki. You've got to see more of his work, especially now that you know what sorts of things to expect.

Well I have actually seen lots of Suzuki's movies but for some reason I had image that this was going to be more traditional Yakuza movie and clearly it was not. Still it was amazing film but some how I'm tad disappointed... My own fault for expecting something "mundane" from Suzuki. :lol

Well here's the recent list:

Appaloosa - Bleh, expected more from Ed Harris.

Slumdog Millionaire - Love Danny Boyle but I think this is incredibly overhyped. Don't get me wrong, it's a good movie, but I've read history books and actually been to India, I don't need a movie telling me about it. Movies are supposed to be entertaining. But I did like the class structure stuff and differences between the brothers but thought that the romance wasn't very well done. I didn't feel anything for either of them besides one of them was loyal.

Gran Torino - Incredible job by Clint Eastwood both behind and infront of the camera. Good story with contemporary and timeless relevance, very funny, and just had a great time at the theatre. Proves that he can still swing the bad-assery.

The Wrestler - Awesome little film that could. Great performances and directing and great "welcome back" for Mickey. Big fan of him. Pretty un-flashy of Aranofsky but did a great job capturing the mood and making a great and subtle film. Hope for the best for this flick.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button - Incredible emotional ride. Anyone that's loved or lost feels the same. Any similarities it has to other films be damned, it's original and awesome. David Fincher is slowly becoming my favorite director.
