overall i liked it but the ending was really abrupt.

2001_A_Space_odyssey.gif

I'm so lttp with this that it's shameful. Excellent cinematography (it is Kubrick after all) with a plot that will probably need a nights thinking.

Superbad.

holy shit. this movie a pile. completely utter bullshit.
stupid teen drinking comedy awfulness.

i hate every single character in it.
all of them

well, except the two cops. They're great.

everyone else sucks. this movie sucks. why am I watching it.

Role Models

Found it hilarious. Very Apatow-like (dialogue, etc) and none of the actors really did anything new (Paul Rudd wasn't particularly different to his roles in movies like Knocked Up, Stifler was basically Stifler, McLovin was basically McLovin), but I found the movie to be very funny so I couldn't really care less.

im_news_hotel_for_dogs.jpg

Jealous aren't ya! Price you pay to be the greatest uncle to your only nephew. I'm a dog person too though, so parts were cute. I ate popcorn too. Yum, popcorn.

Taken - A bit over the top and predictable, yet awesome. Very entertaining movie, I liked it for the same reasons I like 24.

The Wrestler - A downer, but I really enjoyed it.

Movie was visually stunning but as a Yakuza movie it let me down. It wasn't bad or anything but I just wasn't expecting this kind of film.

Nobody expects a Suzuki picture!

just finished watching...

Dracula 3000 (titled Val Helsing: Dracula's Revenge here)

Awesome movie set in space in the year 2995 or something like that, which cliches alien BUT with dracula (all dressed up in his traditional outfit and cape) instead of the alien on the abandoned ship.

CAST:

Casper van dien (of SKELETON MAN fame)
Erika Eleniak (of playboy and baywatch fame)
Coolio (!)

IMDB RATING: 1.9 (currently)

Unbelievably bad, and therefore awesome.

Revolutionary Road - Stellar performances, but it seemed like the big "moments" of the movie ballooned out of no where. It felt as if the characters were bipolar, unreasonably flying off the handle; it lacked sufficient build-up. 3.5 (out of 5)

The Wrestler - Rourke was really good. The movie did a great job capturing the--what some would call "foolish"--drive of Ram and his need to be apart of his one true love: wrestling. As a viewer, you admire his strength but caution him against his disregard for his own well-being...like a friend would. 3.5 (out of 5).

Definitely doesn't do anything new but it was still really entertaining. He loved kicking people in the gonads too.

Meet Dave - It wasn't all that bad. It wasn't awesome but I didn't fall a sleep... But that means it was probably horrible since I only sleep through good movies.

rocknrolla_ver2.jpg

saw ROCKNROLLA tonight and enjoyed it quite a bit although it did drag somewhere towards the end. Snappy. Well, its a standard guy ritchie film but he does them like no one else can. Thandie Newtown was smokin in it. Considering I thought she was sort of appalling when she showed up in MI2, she's come a long way. She's been really good in her last few films.

Another visually stunning movie. Otherwise the movie was really meh. Story had lot of potential but it ended up being such a mess. Awesome soundtrack BTW. 6.5/10

Kafka

After hearing the guys on Filmspotting splooge all over Soderbergh I felt obligated to check out some of his other films besides the "Ocean's" movies (neither of which I'm particularly fond of, I hated Twelve), this one had Jeremy Irons in it so it felt like a good place to start.

Turned out to be a great choice! 8/10

Let the Right One In- Amazing. One of the best movies to come out last year. I love minimalist horror movies and this one is the best one yet due to its strong story.

Freddy vs. Jason- Best thing about this movie is how it brought back memories of watching Nightmare and Friday 13th as a kid. I kung fu movie with Jason and Freddy...what were they thinking?

Interview with the Vampire- Just epic. Brad Pitt does an amazing job and this movie is still beautiful.

Went and saw The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button the other day, excellent movie. Seemed a bit long and the end was abrupt, but other than that it was nice.

Thanks for the reminder! I've been meaning to see this for a long time (aside from Che, it's the only Soderbergh I haven't seen yet). He was apparently working on a recut version of the film, but I haven't heard anything about it in some time. Also, is it a coincidence that your avatar looks exactly like Irons' character...?

CiSTM's mention of Tokyo Drifter yesterday put me in the mood for some Suzuki, so I watched Youth of the Beast today:

dc4i9t.jpg

Even with this predating some of his more well-known, audacious films, I'm constantly in awe of his visual sensibilities, action set pieces and lunatic cast of characters. A nightclub hides a yakuza den behind a wall of one-way mirrors, another mob boss sets up in an office with a towering movie screen outside the windows. A sadist attacks a woman with a whip, driving her out into a whirlwind of glowing yellow sand, and rival gangs engage in a chaotic nighttime battle of bullets, careening cars and explosions. Absolutely marvelous.

I really like this one. I love the brawls in these early pictures. It's like he tells the cast to freak out for ten minutes and films the results.

I wish this were on disc in the US. I've still got a decent number of Soderbergh's films to see, but this one's on there.

*Slumdog Millionaire
*The Wrestler
*Curious Case of Benjamin Button

I'm trying to catch all of the potential "Best Picture" nominees for the Oscars. Really enjoyed all the movies so far. :D

American-beauty-mov-poster.jpg

What a great film. I love Kevin Spacey and look forward to seeing Sam Mendes' other films. American Beauty is a great motivator but I bet I'll wake up tomorrow feeling just as indifferent towards real change. I kind of forget about the start of the film and didn't realise what was going to happen until 10 minutes before the end lol.

City_of_ember.jpg

I had never heard of this, but I loved everything about it. In fact, I think it’s my favourite fantasy movie since Stardust. It somehow gave me a Fallout-vibe, and Bill Murray has a great supporting role. Bill Murray is the man.

Max_Payne_poster.jpg

A bit of a mess, but a decent videogame adaptation. Amaury Nolasco (Sucre from Prison Break) is totally unconvincing as a bad guy, though, and WTF@Nelly Furtado? On the other hand, I thought Mila Kunis did surprisingly well. Plus, she’s smoking.

Saw pineapple express over the weekend. Man what a disappointment. It's one of those movies where the trailer is better than the overall film and tells you all there is to the movie.

The theme for the ps3 that came with the bluray was pretty cool though. And the angie chick in the movie was fine.

Damn, the top 10 list thread was up on December 15th? No wonder I missed it.
Don't post in it! I refuse to acknowledge it!

You're probably thinking of the thread I made last year, which I posted later so people could actually see most of 2008 movies. I plan on doing the same this year. :)

200px-What_just_happened.jpg

I enjoyed this. It was refreshing to see Deniro not completely phone in a performance for once (Although I suspect some of the story elements hitting quite close to home, didn't require so much of a stretch). The scenes with Michael Wincott as the eccentric director who is forced by the studio's to change his film's endings being a particular highlight (That and Bruce Willis beard become sort of a reoccurring joke). It's a shame they didn't push the concept further but all in all fairly solid.

200px-Benjamin_Button_poster.jpg

It's one of the rare films of last year that stayed with me well after I had seen it. Fincher's direction here is almost faultless, he's really become a master technician and that's not only from the technical achievements with this film. It was a lot less whimsical than I thought it would be and outside of Button's condition quite grounded. There are some pacing issues that do come up latter, but it's a film that spends it's time letting the characters breathe and for that I can't exactly fault it. Loved the look of the film and quite a haunting soundtrack to boot.

Roughly in order that I saw them. Apologies if there's any repeats, hopefully I don't contradict myself.

Twelfth Night - The Trevor Nunn version with Helena Bonham Carter. So not worth the wait, just a plain workman-like adaptation.

200px-Hot_fuzz.jpg

Hot Fuzz - Definitely liked it, there were a lot of unexpectedly poignant moments. Ending got a little absurd.

200px-Hamlet_1996_poster.jpg

Hamlet - Every bit as visually stunning as I remembered. Is this on Blu-Ray? Might be a reason to upgrade. Not my personal favorite adaptation (it varies, but now I'm on board with Zeffirelli's period version) but always a contender. Of the major adaptations, my favorite "To be or not to be" soliloquy, but Helena Bonham Carter kicks the shit out of Kate Winslet's better-than-I-remembered Ophelia.

200px-WALL-Eposter.jpg

Wall-E - Apparently, I have no soul because I wasn't completely enamored by this. Up until they got to the Axiom, however, I was in love (minus the out-of-place Fred Willard crap.) It was the portrayal of the humans that really got to me, completely illogical (leave an apparently utopian life to go back to Earth on the basis of a single plant?) and character design that was jarringly inconsistent with the rest of the movie. Every frame of John and Mary was a frame stolen from things I cared about.

200px-Forbiddenplanetposter.jpg

Forbidden Planet - I was pretty disappointed when I realized how dissimilar the plot was to the supposed inspiration (The Tempest.) After getting beyond that, I did like it, although the misogynistic treatment of women unfortunately dates the film

200px-A_Midnight_Clear_DVD_Cover.jpg

A Midnight Clear - Another re-watch of a favorite. I was really struck this time by the paternalistic treatment of Mother by the rest of the squad. I'm glad they did cut the deleted scene on the DVD, it would've killed any sympathy you're supposed to have for Mother. A wealth of great lines.

200px-Darjeeling_Limited_Poster.jpg

The Darjeeling Limited - Just the first watch of what I expect to be many. Not entirely sure where it fits in my ranking of the Wes Anderson films (Rushmore > Life Aquatic > Royal Tenenbaums > Bottle Rocket) quite yet.

200px-La_confidential.jpg

L.A. Confidential - For such a universally beloved movie, I'm surprised I'm having as hard a time thinking of what to say about it as I am. I do remember thinking that everything wrapped up perhaps too pat and neatly, but also that it was very well done.

200px-Kingdomofthecrystalskull.jpg

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of please kill me now so I can forget this crap - This one had me until Indy was followed by Peruvian ninjas that did jack shit while he was getting the getting the crystal skull. I just got dumber for typing that sentence.

Ironmanposter.JPG

Iron Man - Aside from the typical comic book fight sequence at the end, pretty engaging and perfect fit between actor and role. I was never a big Iron Man fan, wasn't he more of an annoying goody-two-shoes in the comics? Regardless, I like the playboy portrayal. All that said, I have my reservations as to whether they'll strike lightening twice.

200px-Dark_Knight.jpg

The Dark Knight - I haven't seen Batman Begins, and I'm not completely sold on the vision Nolan has of Batman (it's very The Dark Knight Returns-esque, which is fine for a one-off, but as the mainstream image... eh...,) but loved this movie regardless. Heath Ledger definitely deserves awards, and he didn't even need to die to deserve them. Great, inspired performance.

200px-Lifeofbrianfilmposter.jpg

Monty Python's The Life of Brian - First time re-watching this in at least fifteen years, and ir didn't hold up nearly as good as I had hoped. Brian's situation devolved too quickly, it felt like it was missing a sequence of scenes in the middle, perhaps another assignment for the People's Front of Judea. I know we're all desensitized to religious bashing, but in today's climate, this was pretty damned tame for such a supposedly controversial movie.

200px-Book_of_secrets_post.jpg

National Treasure 2 - Ok, so sue me, I liked the first National Treasure. Still a fun popcorn movie that delivers a ride like few others, even if it strains the suspension of disbelief even further than the first (my snooty beret-wearing alter ego would say it has good pacing.) Wilkinson's
death
was pretty unsatisfactory, and left the ending much more downbeat than the first film.

200px-Sunshine_poster.jpg

Sunshine - I know the third act gets a lot of criticism, but it still works for me. For the haters, I would note that the film does lay the groundwork for the "bathe yourself in sunshine = go coo-coo for coca-puffs" fairly early on. Just incredible visuals.

215px-Lady_moviep.jpg

The Lady Vanishes - I picked up a public domain Hitchcock collection (knowing exactly what I was getting myself in for,) and this was the first on the discs. Holds up much better than I would've thought. The set-up seems to take unusually long, but does provide some misdirection as to who the main characters are. While writing this, I can't help but to compare the treatment of women between this and Forbidden Planet. This was twenty years earlier, and while there's still some stereotypical treatment, it feels much more of the time and less aggressively dismissive of women.
