Brilliant.

Burn_After_Reading.jpg

i saw this last night and i absolutely loved it. there are some pacing in issues in the beginning, but it picks up right when pitt's character appears--his performance was pretty awesome, as were clooney's and mcdormand's, but david rasche and j.k. simmon stole the the show for me.

and what did everyone think of the ending? i thought it was perfect.

The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Can a movie get six out of five stars?

No kidding, I've watched the damned thing 4-5 times already and it has already moved well into my top 10 movies of all time list. Acting was amazing, musical score was amazing, cinematography was among the best I've ever seen, and the build up and tension was second to none. Just an all around amazing film.

It was a fantastic movie. I thought it was hilarious. George Clooney was probably my favorite though, and john malkovich also because he says fuck and wtf like 40 times lol.
damn I loved when brad pitt got shot. that was so hilarious, the smiling expression on his face sealed it. someone on gaf had spoiled the movie but i had forgotten so it was so awesome. the ending was great, the chick got her surgery and 2 guys died in the process.
Epic fail.

Nick Cave and Warren Ellis' score for Jesse James was the best of 2007, and amongst the best of the decade. Regardless of what you thought of the movie, the score is incredible.

"Song for Bob" and its use in the film is sublime.

Deja Vu... Ummm, this was among the worst movies I've ever seen. It was just awful movie :/ Even Denzel couldn't save it :(

Revolutionary Road - I really really liked it, one of the best movies I've seen in months. Kate Winslet is amazing, great direction, and it has another fantastic Thomas Newman score.

Agree completely, one of the best scores of the decade.

A FUCKING MEN. I can NEVER get bored of Song for Bob. The whole soundtrack is amazing. The movie is also one of my favourites of all time.

I'm sorry but the vibraphone + triangle combo just takes me right out of the old west. Save that stuff for Edward Scissorhands and Harry Potter.

It's not a western in the traditional sense. It's a character study, and the music syncs with the film's personalities in an incredible way.

QFT. I'm actually listening to it as we speak. :D

A user review I read pretty much summed it up, once you've seen Lock Stock you've pretty much seen Richie's hand. Oh sure the budget's been raised and the McGuffin slightly altered (We've moved on from antique shotguns and diamonds to paintings) not forgetting Borris the blade has now been replaced by indestructible Russians. The fact of the matter is the formula has not changed just been given a fresh coat of paint. Despite that I would be lying if I said the film didn't give me some pleasure particularly with some of the casting including Mark Strong who stole the show in Bodies of lies, the super talented Idris Elba from Wire fame and even Superhans has a brief role. The editing and package is as breezy as ever, yet unlike Snatch I don't think I will be revisiting this anytime soon. Perhaps a case of diminishing returns?

This has always been my least favourite Kubrick film. I had always felt the film's second half really paled in comparison to the whole Parris Island training, so it's with some surprise how much I actually enjoyed it this time around. While it didn't completely change my opinion I found myself much more engrossed than previously. It's worth repeating what a fantastic if not all to brief performance Vincent D'Onofrio gives.

Easily rises to the top and becomes my favourite Pixar film I've seen to date. Watching it I was much less reminded of superheroes than Thunderbirds. A simple but elegant story which thankfully never over indulges.

Watched about 20 minutes of Benjamin Button. Beh. Too weird for me. Will try again at a later date.

Watched The Wrestler though. Great movie! Much better than any of the Oscar contenders. Marisa Tomei is freakin hot for an old lady.

So did you leave the theater after 20 minutes and go to another movie? I don't get how can you watch only 20 minutes and come back to it at a later date when it's in theaters.

No idea why this seems to be so well-liked. It wasn't bad; it was actually thoroughly competent (except the fact that the score takes some sharp turns to Cheesetown), but it was so predictable at every turn. That the rest of the movie was going to be
"the game" and that she failed by not playing and therefor let Simon die and that the rest of the story would lead up to some disaster that occured at the orphanage
was immediately obvious the second
the doll appeared in the bed
. Come on, was there anyone who didn't pick up on that?

Also, isn't this almost the same story as some american horror movie from the 00's...that I can't remember the name of.
Some dude grew up in a orphanage and got out, is drawn back for some reason, discovers horrible disaster happened.
What movie am I thinking of? Have a vague memory of the whole orphanage thing being a subplot...

In Bruges
Hysterical, absolutly hilarious film with a really unique comedy style in film - it actually felt more like a sitcom than anything, but in an action movie.

So many great quotes, but I love the call back of "A bottle!" before he clocks the woman. And the "of course you can't fucking see, i just shot you in the eye with a blank". Colin Ferrel is amazing in this.

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Heart wrenching film, I immeditly liked the relationship between Joel and Clem, and was distraught when it all went wrong. Then, as I clicked what the beginning was, I held out hope again.... just an emotional rollercoaster of a film, and Kate Winslett is super hot.

The Royal Tennenbaums
Super dark comedy, and despite the wacky and unbelievable world, i still felt for the characters. Luke Wilson's transformation scene was very engaging. Somehow the silly, comedic notion that he still wears a sweat band on his head to this day, made a very real and emotional scene work. Strange juxtaposition.

Burn After Reading
Boring boring boring. I quit about 3/4 in; Ozzy was a dickhead, George Cloony's character was an asshole, Linda was as boring as bread... even Brad Pitt's character was pretty annoying.

25th hour. spike lee's best film and one of the most underrated films of the past ten years. ed norton, philip seymour hoffman, barry pepper, rosario dawson, and brian cox in spike lee's most mature, least preachy movie to date. incredible.

Let's see...

Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels
The Kite Runner
Snatch
Cape No. 7 (海角七號)
Iron Man
Laputa: Castle in the Sky
Pokémon Movie: Giratina and the Sky Bouquet: Sheimi
Yes Man
Valkyrie
The Truman Show
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
The Equation of Love and Death (李米的猜想)
007: Quantum of Solace
Disney's Chirstmas Carol
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
True Lies

Those were all the movies I saw over the winter break. I'm also planning on watching The Incredible Hulk, Across the Universe, Chasing Ghosts: Beyond the Arcade, and If You Are the One (非诚勿扰) before the end of my break.

RocknRolla

Pretty cool movie, not as good as Snatch or Lock Stock, but still pretty awesome.
I can't wait for The Real RocknRolla

:D

I rewatched two yesterday:

Dark Knight: Wasn't sure if I'd like it as much the second time around but it was still enjoyable. Still feels too long. As a side note, I downloaded the 720p version from the Xbox Live Marketplace and once again I felt slightly underwhelmed by the quality. Even my wife complained about the framerate issues. Perhaps it's just my system.

Cast Away: The plane crash scene is terrifying. After seeing Bale drop so much weight for The Machinist, Tom Hanks's weight loss seems quite ordinary in comparison. Still a good movie though. Love the final scene.

i saw pineapple express a couple of days ago. i thought it was really great.

it was pretty consistent with the laughs, and it's one of the best buddy flicks i've seen.

i loved this scene:

after
getting shot twice
, he fixed himself that bowl of pasta, got some drinks to go with it, and then dragged himself to the toilet to eat... :lol

Slumdog Millionaire.

First off, it started off well, and the kids were great.

That's it really.

So it's supposed to be a fairy tale yeah? But even fairy tales in a modern setting has to have some credibility, otherwise it's simply bullshit. The concept was interesting, but I think, it was poorly executed.
Just some of my complaints:
Let's start off with the questions shall we? So, beginning from question 1 to 14, every question is practically answered through events that have happened throughout his life, in chronological order??? I don't mind him getting the very little knowledge he really does seem to have from the life events that have happened to him to answer the questions, but the way it was laid out, was just stupid. Question 1, when he was 5, Question 2, he's slightly older, Question 3 ask the audience, Question 4, he's slightly more older, and so forth.
Ok, so that out of the way, what is with having a complete dickhead of a brother. This is one of the biggest cliches ever, having a brother who is a complete dick. Infact, the entire population of India in the film seem to be full of complete dicks. Even the host, is a complete dick. When she's getting kidnapped, in broad daylight in a packed train station, and no one does anything? Is that really India?
Infact, when he does become famous from the show, how the hell, right after winning it, does the most recognisable person in India not get mobbed by people while he's sitting on the street, and standing on a train platform.
This is incomprehensibly unbelievable that out of the billion people that live in India, not one would be able to recognise him and go up to him and blabber about how much of an inspiration he is or whatever.
And the soundtrack was awful. Especially when they're on the train and that stupid fucking song comes on.
This film, i suppose was designed in such a way, that they would need to get me to care about the characters, but really, I didn't care one bit. If he were to get assassinated at the end, or the female character get stolen and boned to the bone, I wouldn't care.

And that's all I have to say about that.

4/10, well acted by the children, which is a rarity.

Over the weekend I saw:

The Good, the Bad and the Weird - Awesome. Good action and some lol moments. I don't know what it is about Korean film makers, but it seems like whenever they try for something cool or ambitious, they manage to pull it off. 9/10

Double bill: Two fast paced hard action flicks...one flopped and one was a huge success.

Shoot 'Em Up - Love this film. I think I may have enjoyed it more the 2nd time 'round. My one complaint would be that the gun fights are a little pedestrian, particularly after the great opening sequence.

Wanted - Saw this in theatres and it is a great looking BR. The alternative opening was kind of cool. Really like this movie and am interested in what they can pull off with the sequel.

Pretty sure I saw another movie, but I'll be damned if I can remember what it was, now.

Brand Upon the Brain - Possibly the best movie ever made. Watching the making-of on the Criterion disc was pure joy, as well. Guy Maddin is one of the greatest artists working in film today.

I watched My Winnipeg while I was on my "break" and found for my new found love for Guy Maddin too. I will probably watch this sometime this week.

Not enough old movies in this thread...

The Great Waltz (1938)
Beautiful movie with beautiful music. If you don't feel anything listening to Strauss's compositions in this movie, you have no soul. The story is nothing out of the ordinary, even if it was LOOSELY based on Strauss II's life. It featured the opera singer Miliza Korjus, who was nominated for an Oscar for supporing actress. I felt that some performances were just fluff pieces for her abilities, but the movie was good nonetheless.

This is the second film I see based on classical composers along with Immortal Beloved (Beethoven), and they have both been amazing.

My Winnipeg was the best movie I saw in 2008. I immediately added every Maddin film I could find to my Netflix queue after seeing it.

Check out Saddest Music in the World, as well. Brilliance.

Haha, I just got banned. Yeah, I am probably going to watch the entire Guy Maddin catalog within the next couple of days like you Dr. Strangelove. Before My Winnipeg, I have only seen that Dracula ballet movie and didn't care for it.

Is there a top 10 films of the year thread?

Here are some films I have seen since I last posted (out of 5):

Revolutionary Road - **
Doubt - **
Milk - **
The Curious Case of Ben Button - **
The Reader - ***
My Winnipeg - **** 1/2
Frost / Nixon - ***
Four Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days - ***** (this is the best film I have seen in 2008 probably. It is flawless and does an excellent job of making you feel like the protagonist while all this crap happens to her.)
The Wrestler - ****
Gran Torino - **** (I hated the song moments though but this is a great deal of fun though)
Alice - ** (the 1989 swedish film)
Shotgun Stories - *** 1/2 (even though the final act sort of falls apart, it reminded me of being like Gummo with a plot and a heart)
Escape from New York - *** (saw an old 35mm print of this)
Black Christmas - *** 1/2 (also on an old 35mm print)

There are some others but I can't remember though. Here is my top 15 if there isn't a thread about it:
1. Four Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
2. My Winnipeg
3. Let the Right One In
4. Happy Go Lucky (I think 2 through 4 are sort of tied)
5. The Dark Knight
6. Tell No One
7. The Wrestler
8. Good, the Bad, the Weird
9. Gran Torino
10. Wendy and Lucy
11. How to Get Rid of Others
12. In Bruges
13. Shotgun Stories
14. Eden Log
15. The Reader

Where is Wall-E man?

Just watched the Big Lebowski and Raiders of the Lost arc back to back. What a movie the Big Lebowski is, I really loved it. So many great lines and quotes, Walter (John Goodman's character) really steals the show.

I had quite a good weekend of blockbuster rentals and seeing a show.

-First up awas Children of men....holy shit. I love when im surprised by a movie because usually I read alot of reviews. I knew it was good, but damn, didn't know it was THAT good.

-Eagle Eye. Decent I guess, cool action stuff. Easily forgettable but still worth seeing.

-The wrestler. There was an actual line to see this movie which surprised me. My girlfriend even really liked it. Mickey rourke is amazing.

Where is Wall-E man?

If you wanted to do a search at the Wall-E hype thread, you will se me saying that I was even anticipating this even more than the Dark Knight. Wall-E was the most disappointing film I have seen all year. I was expecting this science fiction masterpiece but instead I got this sort of good first half that isn't as great as I even rembered with an obnoxious second half. I think it is the worst Pixar movie I have seen. I was on the hype train for this film for years it seemed like. God, it still hurts my heart thinking about it.

just got back from watching slumdog millionaire at dendy circularquay and LOVED IT!

its not perfect and I'd rate it 9.5/10 for a couple of hokey moments... but overall, its such an amazingly lucid fairy tale - perfectly cast, scary as hell (when seen through the world of the children), funny, pathos, moving, sad, happy, uplifting. Man, I just thought it was such a great movie. The film is almost guerilla style in terms of how it was shot and I loved how non-conventional some of the camera work was (not familiar w bollywood films so who knows) but it was almost like an indian flavoured wongkarwai.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE IS FUCKING GOOD!
