Saw Avatar. Was awesome.

Saw Sherlock Holmes. Was good but way too fucking long.

Saw The Book of Eli. Had a good beginning and nice visuals, but the movie fell flat in the end and the religious message really annoyed me. Not to mention
the whole movie being about bringing the bible to man's new salvation
just made everything seem stupid.

Saw Legion. Was horrible, cheesy, and boring.

No Mercy For the Rude, a Korean comedy about a mute assassin. Really quite good. The lead actor had a wonderfully expressive face. Goodness knows the film would have died had he not done so well in that regard, but it was very fine work.

Saw Dancer in the Dark. Made me want to check out some of Bjork's music, but man was it a depressing film. Still really good though.

Just saw a German movie called Soul Kitchen. Set in Hamburg, it centers around Zinos who is trying to run a shabby restaurant. When he hands the kitchen over to an ingenious chef the business starts blooming and the restaurants becomes an in spot for the typical hamburg crowd of establishment, artists and underworld alike. But Zinos himself spirals into crisis, with his girlfriend leaving for Shanghai, his brother in prison, dubious investors and a slipped disc to top things off.

A great, warm urban comedy with a sweat soundtrack. I dont know whether an English version does exist. If so, its certainly worth checking it out. Here, have a trailer

saw

Mosquito the Rapist (swiss necrophilia horror/thriller) quite disturbing stuff but not bad at all
7/10

and

Dark Forest (aka Sway) (C Trash Horror) boring, stupid and very very cheap
4/10

I just watched the Hangover for the first time. Hilarious movie and not nearly as raunchy as I thought it would be.
My 2nd favorite comedy of 2009 behind I love you man.

Dr. Strangelove
for the current political system. It was that good.

"We have a saying in my country that things will be....difficult difficult lemon difficult"

Loved that movie. Peter Capaldi was the best. :D

Just watched There Will Be Blood for the first time, loved it. Why didn't I watch this sooner? Daniel Day Lewis is a fucking acting god.

Dancer in the Dark had me depressed for days after seeing it. So brutal. Which is pretty amazing considering how ridiculous the plot was.

Mary&Max : A stop motion clay animated movie. One of the most funny, gritty and emotional animated picture i have seen. Really wonderful. Not really recommended for children though.

Gettysburg.

Kind of been hitting on the American civil war lately (being an Aussie just genuinely intrigued) and this was the next move. Damn good film. Very tame, but well acted.

Probably give it an 8/10.

Le Bonheur (1965)

man this was done so wonderfully. i had never seen a Varda movie prior to this so i had no idea what to expect. the first ten minutes were so idyllic and bright and left me thinking just what the hell is this saccharine flowery shit? then the dude starts having an affair and things become very interesting but the tone remains light and breezy and then... whaaaat the hell man. never seen anything like the ending. so ostensibly happy yet so disturbing. i very much liked the seasonal shift that occurs with it. summer turns to autumn and the music and the colours of the environment and of the clothes change so suddenly and drastically to signify that shit is messed up. really left an impression on me.

Within Our Gates (1920)

generally considered to be a response to Birth of a Nation. as such it is superb and much more convincing and, needless to say, much more real. done with a muuuch smaller budget tho so no large-scale fight scenes to be found here. in and of itself it is still a very good movie. i liked the scene where the game of cards goes awry. tension builds up, the lights go out, shots are fired, the light turns back on and we see the results of the violence. how many times have i seen this done afterwards? great use of flashback near the end that provided several things: important backstory, moral message and a climactic ending.

an observation: the black people in this movie who are on the side of righteousness have much lighter skin than those who are the bad guys. it's interesting to observe how so much, yet so little has changed in approx. a century. i haven't seen it yet, but Precious pulled the same stunt not too long ago and was blasted for it. in Within Our Gates, this was probably a necessity because the target audience was in large part fearful, bigoted white people who had to be 'converted' one baby step at a time.

Sherlock Holmes (2009)

a children's movie and an uninspired one at that. i am not familiar with doyle's writings but i doubt they take as many cues from american superheroes and disney movies as this monstrosity does. it's fucking pirates of the caribbean set in fin de siecle London. it's abrasive and dumb. extravagant fight scenes that are about sloppy cgi 'decors' more than they are about the actual fights. everyone over the age of ten will know what's going to happen so tension and genuine excitement are nowhere to be found. sherlock and watson beat the baddies, add a few seconds of silence, punctuate it with a bad joke. HA HA. a children's movie.

one of the principal rules of formulaic shit like this is to give the baddie proper motivation. it's what makes them scary and it's what makes them such a baddie. this motivation only becomes clear in what probably is the third act of the movie, not sure because it was such a mess. apparently he wants to restore the british empire and kill a bunch of dudes. ooooh very interesting. it's not black magic after all? oh, you don't say!

none of it matters in the end because it's all just a giant setup for the sequel which seems to be The Thing To Do nowadays and which, unlike the motivation of the villain of the actual movie i was watching, was introduced waaay too early. i did not like this movie.

Please see The Hurt Locker.

Watched it for the first time last night and absolutely loved it.

My last girlfriend turned me on to that movie. Pun intended.
I love Maggie Gyllenhaal.

If you want more Gael, then watch 'Y Tu Mama Tambien' or Babel, that's if you haven't already.

Seen them both, my friend, along with The Science of Sleep (kinda weird), The Motorcycle Diaries (liked it), and The King (liked it). Next is Bad Education and Rudo y Cursi.

Last night I saw 500 Days of Summer. I really enjoyed it. I did get a real Annie Hall vibe from it which is a good thing as its one of my all-time faves. My favorite part was the split screen scene towards the end. I can so relate.

Finally saw Avatar in IMAX 3D earlier today and was amazed. It really felt like a whole new movie experience and I am glad Cameron made it happen. I will go see it again next week because there's no way in hell any home video release will ever capture what I saw.

Last night I watched 'Bran Nue Dae' a movie of the musical by the same name. I am still unsure how I feel about it. It was funny at points but the ending was very contrived. I know that as a musical I shouldn't expect anything else, but I think it was probably better as a play.

Let me know how Rudo y Cursi is when you watch it. I've been eyeballing that movie for months but never watched it for some reason.

Oh yeah, the movie was excellent. That scene was especially good, I agree, though the ending was absolutely hysterical. I want to watch it again with some friends of mine, but that probably won't be until this summer.

I just finished watching Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind on blu-ray (it's a bare-bones release in Canada). I've never seen this movie before or knew much of what it was about, I finally decided to get it on a whim when I was perusing Future Shop's blu-ray isle. The movie started off very very confusing, but now I realize that was on purpose. The movie is meant to disorient, told non-linear style switching from reality to memory or dream. The movie really gets ya thinking, invoking a science fiction technique of memory altering and erasing, the concept of love, and second chances. I was moved by Kate Winslet's portrayal in this movie as Clementine... Jim Carrey, was adequate. Even the side story about the Lacuna staff with their own problems with ethics and torid love affairs is interesting. I can see why this movie was so acclaimed... I can't believe I never watched it when it first came out.

This movie, along with 500 Days of Summer, some great great shit I've seen in the past 2 weeks. Highly recommended, should watch all the way through to get it all.

I finally get the reference in the Stars music video for "Your Ex-Lover is Dead" to this movie, that was released a year after this movie came out.

I love Gervais, but this is trash. i couldnt believe he wrote and directed this. and what the fuck is with all the product placements?

poster-the-coens-a-serious-man1.jpg

this was alright. i don't really think i understood it. what is the significance of the first and last scenes of the movie?

antichrist-movie-poster.jpg

I'm usually not that into art films, but this really moved me. i think everything about the movie is good

moon-blu-ray.jpg

i thought this was very cool. overall a very smart movie. i loved the scenes between the two

brothers_movie_poster.jpg

this could have been really good, but i think its a little bit too melodramatic? it's pretty fucked up what tobey had to come back to (with his little girls) though, but im sure that shit happens all the time :(

ObserveAndReport325A.jpg

I thought this was going to be dumb as fuck, but it's actually pretty damn good. i didnt kno it was by the guy who brought us EASTBOUND&DOWN !

Watch-Up-In-The-Air-Movie-Online-Free-Stream-Now.jpg

Just like Juno and Thank you for Smoking, this movie is everything I hate about Hollywood movies. everything that comes out of the characters's mouths feel like they were written in a writer's room. I don't think the dialogue is funny or clever and not only are the jokes bad but they feel forced. again the bombardment of product placements kind of kill it for me. i think people like it because it's sad-funny(?) and takes people an emotional ride or something? fuck if i know ..

I saw this just now;

3682866912_1fa0e8d78c.jpg

Like most of gaf i thought this would be trash from the trailers and all that jazz, but turns out the movie deals with some incredibly interesting concepts and handles them pretty well. Definitely not the typical movie you'd expect Bruce Willis to star in as an action release.

Only real flaw with it was some of the effects were pretty cheap looking and could have used more polish. Story also fell into some conventions to satisfy the normal moviegoers.

I don't know whether to laugh or vomit... :lol

More on-topic. I recently had to pleasure of watching this gem from the Asylum.
eqcaj4.jpg

Just look at that cover. Pure awesome. This was every bit as good as Megashark vs. Giant Octopus, and was a lot of fun to riff with friends. I mean the movie ends with
Sherlock in a hot-air balloon with machine guns, dueling with his brother, Springheel Jack in a robot dragon, as Watson races to stop an exploding cyborg from attacking the Royal Palace.
I highly recommend it to any fans of terrible movies.

Was it any good ? I want to see this so badly but it wont be out here untill 2010 september :(

Where is here?
It was pretty good. Story is a little far fetched, but what anime isn't. Cute characters, some good action scenes and pretty damn funny. I'd say it's worth the buy. :D

I saw "The Edge of Darkness" w/Mel Gibson. It's super violent and not really redemptive at all (so that means it should be pretty good), and has questionable transitions away from the main character that makes the audience feel like we're an omnipotent observer, while when the scene is with Mel's character we're only shown what he can see (or at least, his perspective). The transitions are unsettling.

That said, I liked it despite itself. Filled with cliches, poor cuts, and paint-by-numbers scenes, not to mention quite a few garbled dialogue where nobody in the audience could understand (especially the english guy), the film was a nice showcase for Mel Gibson and a little satiation for those with bloodlust--if not satisfying character development, dialogue, or writing.

Those hoping for a Taken reprise will only find the Angry/Violent Dad and scared daughter in common.

6.5/10

Got myself around to watching two Nolan movies
16kdtfs.jpg

Really enjoyed it, the competition between the two of them and constant plot twists were really fun to watch, though the last one was kinda predictable, I guessed they're gonna be one person around halfway through the movie. Enjoyable one nonetheless, ~8/10

Now this one, woah. I absolutely loved this movie. Though at first I was lost in the narration, I soon caught up and progressing the story from the ending to the middle, uncovering more and more about the plot was amazing. And how he tricked himself, started playing his own game was simply astounding. Easily 10/10

Samurai Rebellion (1967) - Stark black and white tale with a series of relationships that evolve and twist inside an inhumane system. Stunning and a must watch if you like stories in the vein of the old tragedies.

so this yesterday.
it was pretty good.
The-Motorcycle-Diaries.jpg

and Memories of Murder the night before.
it had the same mood as chaser which was great.
Even though i saw where the film was going, the ending was still surprising.
