I wanted to put Jesse James in 2007's spot but it felt wrong leaving out Edgar Wright in any of these years. Love both movies anyways. 2007 was stacked.

Lady Snowblood (1973)
Not what I was expecting, but very good.
Having heard the comparisons to Kill Bill, which are immediately obvious, I was expecting a similar tale of bloody revenge. But Lady Snowblood isn't that. At every turn she is denied the type of revenge she wanted. Her intended victims are either absolutely pathetic already, or don't give her the chance to be the one to kill them. And finally, after she thinks it is all over, she ends up killing her own friend to be able to kill her last target. It suckers you into a revenge fantasy and then hits you with the sadness of the endeavor.
3.5/5

Into The Woods (2014)
Can't recommend this one unless you really like musicals. But I do, and enjoyed it. Jack and Little Red Riding Hood were pretty good. 3/5

Saboteur (1942)
3/5

Lone Wolf and Cub
Baby Cart to Hades (1972)
Baby Cart in Peril (1972)
Baby Cart in the Land of Demons (1973)
White Heaven in Hell (1974)
Finally finished this series. It is at its best with Hades and Peril, full of charismatic and memorable opponents, and insane battles. Daigorō's spotlight scenes in those are also highly appreciated. Arguably, there is no need to watch the last two, which aren't nearly as good. Especially White Heaven.

Kubo and the Two Strings (2016)
Made up of cutscenes from an unreleased LucasArts adventure game with phenomenal production values, Kubo is a joy to watch. The Aunties stand out as exceptional enemy design, but the best part is early on with Kubo simply telling stories to people in town, and spending time with his ailing mother. It's never quite as poignant later on when it settles into the flawed main storyline. Overall, excellent.
3.5/5

Hunt for the Wilderpeople (2016)
Loved it! My god, 2016 was outstanding for comedies.
8.5/10

Mustang (2015)
Incredible. A story of five sisters in a conservative family in Turkey, it feels universal. I can't put into words how good the cast is. The naturalistic moments of them together as sisters pull you in and leave you vulnerable.
8.5/10

My top 5 of 2015-2016 at the moment is Mad Max: Fury Road, The Witch, The Lobster, Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and Mustang.

Yay, first post ever in this thread.

So I saw Mulholland Dr. for the first time yesterday, making it my 4th attempt to get into Lynch, and the first relatively successful one. I can't say that I'm in any kinda awe from it, and I'll probably forget about it in a few weeks, but it was the first one that I managed to get through without wanting to claw my eyes out.

What's the consensus on what happened in the movie,
first two hours a dream and then the rest was the character's real life, with the other scenes being basically a commentary on the Hollywood grinder, right?
That's what I got out of it at least.

Don't wanna give any kinda arbitrary scores, I'll just end this with saying that I enjoyed it for the most part, and found a few interesting scenes in it. Definitely better than the other Lynch movies I've seen.

Also, here's my Letterboxd profile. https://letterboxd.com/SoulEater/ Feel free to add me.

P.S.
Wild at Heart is a pile of excrement. Couldn't not say it.

Edit: Oh, and Patriots Day today. The typical Peter Berg I guess, decent enough.

Mustang (2015)

Hell yes. Mustang is great. More people need to see it.

this is always a good summary/post on what happened in mulholland drive:
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=204265840&postcount=18

the whole drug addled dream portion of the film is all a reflection of her desires, guilt, shortcomings and insecurities in real life. it's basically like Lynch's Wizard of Oz (which happens to be his favorite movie apparently)

So basically what I was thinking. Character study done in a different way. I'm kinda surprised I got it almost 100% right.

giphy_17.gif.CROP.original-original.gif

Fully serious. My hate for WaH is real.

Nah I get it, Wild at Heart is pretty damn polarizing. It gets wacky.

just wanted to use that gif again really. can never go wrong with HHH scust.

edit: also his movies tend to depict violence in a really ugly way. i think it's effective though in his work.

It's not about violence or anything, but for me it just doesn't work(at least the hour that I managed to see of it before shutting it off). I love weirdness, especially the moody "realism" that Lynch does the most (that being the reason I've tried 4 times so far with him), but there's a fine line between being abstract and meaningful and odd just for the sake of it. WaH goes way over for me.

Wild at Heart will always be great just for that one scene:

I've never felt more uncomfortable in my life. Career defining work from Dafoe.

Finally got around to watching Independence Day Resurgence. Could barely finish it. Utterly terrible in every way aside from Goldblum and Pullman being in it, completely opposite of the fun of the original and filled to the brim with weightless CGI.

Silence (Martin Scorsese, 2016) - This movie waved between amazing and "eh" for me.
You have an absolutely stunning cinematography, and the story it tells is incredibly interesting and gripping... but as hard as he tried, i don't think Garfield could successfully carry this movie, and give him that extra level of depth a better actor could've.
To see Neeson figuratively castrated, at the end, felt special though.
Despite thinking it could've easily been akin to something like Embrace of the Serpent, it's still an amazing experience to go through.
This could've been 4 hours and i wouldn't have complained.

It may even have been in the low spots of my 2016 top 10 had i managed to see it in time.

It's close, but The Piano Teacher is my favorite Haneke. Isabelle Huppert also gives the most disturbed performance of a lifetime.

It's not that Mulholland Drive is a bad movie, I just personally feel more influenced by The Piano Teacher that year.

Mulholland Drive was a grower for me. I liked it quite a bit after I saw it, but it wasn't until a few weeks later that it hit me that it's a really damn good movie. I liked Eraserhead more on first watch but MD has stuck with me a lot longer. It's like a festering pile of subconscious ooze (with fuckin dope production design from Jack Fisk and career best performance from Naomi Watts).

How can y'all even remember what movie came out in what year?

If you have a Letterboxd account, go to your Films section, then sort by Decade, then narrow it down to a year.

I didn't even see this thread yesterday. I just someone else make a Letterboxd list and made my own.

1986: Ferris Bueller's Day Off
1987: Planes, Trains, and Automobiles
1988. Scrooged
1989: Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure
1990: Back to the Future Part III
1991: Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
1992: Aladdin
1993: Jurassic Park
1994: The Shawshank Redemption
1995: Toy Story
1996: Beavis & Butthead Do America
1997: Men in Black
1998: Deep Impact
1999: Toy Story 2
2000: The Road to El Dorado
2001: Spirited Away
2002: Treasure Planet
2003: The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
2004: The Incredibles
2005: Joyeux Noel
2006: Rocky Balboa
2007: Hot Fuzz
2008: WALL-E
2009: Up In The Air
2010: TRON: Legacy
2011: Harry Potter & The Deathly Hallows Part 2
2012: Marvel's The Avengers
2013: The World's End
2014: Song of the Sea:
2015: Mad Max: Fury Road
2016: La La Land

Hero's operatic wuxia swordplay is used in an impressionist mode, where the characters are often restrained in their emotions, their sweeping and kinetic movements (and the saturated production design) are instead used to express their turmoil. It's the perfect role Jet Li because while he's a great martial artist, the dude cannot act. I was mostly excited to see Tony's Leung and Maggie Cheung reunited in another fraught romance.

Carlito's Way: De Palma is working at his most emotionally mature here, backed by a great, world weary performance from Pacino as Carlito. The whole film has a noirish, elegiac sweep to it as Carlito keeps getting dragged back into the world he's trying to leave.

With the heavier subject matter De Palma is understandably more reserved thematically than some of his more personal projects. Although he does get in a nice scene of Pacino gazing longingly at a lost love through a window while he's on the rooftop in the rain. Leave it to De Palma to wheedle a touching moment out of vouyeristic stalking.

Stylistically and technically the movie, though more subdued than his red period works, is no less proficient. There's a nice shot of a knife wielding killer reflected in the sunglasses of a thug that recalls some of De Palma's more slasher oriented thrillers, and the climactic cat and mouse set piece that takes us seamlessly from a club, to a train, to a train station is one his most complex and suspenseful, able to go toe to toe with his best.

The sweeping, more restrained and classical tenor of Carlito's Way is less biting, layered, and taught than my favorites of his, but it's nice to see him acquit himself so well to something a little less pervy.

I adore Carlito's Way, it has a certain beauty and elegance to it all. Also, THAT SCORE.

It's a really trashy violent cartoon gangster movie and I love it. The soundtrack and Pacino and DePalmas signature techniques really put it over for me.

Hammy as fuck but the push it to the limit montage is so good too. I can see why some would hate it, shit fully commits to the 80s cheese lol.

Man thinking of how fun his movies were it's a damn shame how shit he's been this century aside from femme Fatale

A movie adaptation like black dahlia would have been smooth sailing for the guy back in the day.

YES, I adore Scarface as well but for a bunch of other reasons. It's a very fun film, not to mention, endlessly quotable.

Because I'm crazy, I did a bunch of other years. I started in 39, because I didn't consistently have multiple films from the years before that. Things get real hairy through the 50's and 60's where each year consistently has 2 or 3 of the greatest films ever made. Shit really drops off a cliff in the late 70's through most of the 80's.

1939 - The Rules of the Game
1940 - The Great Dictator
1941 - Citizen Kane
1942 - Casablanca
1943 - Meshes of the Afternoon
1944 - Double Indemnity
1945 - Brief Encounter
1946 - The Killers
1947 - Out of the Past
1948 - The Red Shoes
1949 - The Third Man
1950 - Sunset Boulevard
1951 - Ace in the Hole
1952 - Ikiru

1954 - Seven Samurai
1955 - All That Heaven Allows
1956 - The Killing
1957 - Wild Strawberries
1958 - Vertigo
1959 - North by Northwest
Sorry The 400 Blows
1960 - The Apartment
1961 - La Notte
1962 - Lawrence of Arabia
1963 - High and Low (8 1/2 and one of my favorites Charade also came out this year)
1964 - Dr. Strangelove

1967 - Le Samourai
1968 - 2001: A Space Odyssey

I saw Meshes of the Afternoon in my very first film class and it almost single-handedly turned me off to the whole prospect of pursuing a film degree. :lol

How you gonna have Solaris instead of the godfather :(

edit: 5 of the movies that are in my top 10 were picked for their year tho so I'm okay with that list

Watched the first couple of episodes of People vs OJ, and it's pretty good so far but holy shit is Cuba Gooding terrible in this. I could look past him not physically resembling OJ in the slightest if he was turning in a good performance, but thus far that hasn't been the case. Pretty weird in a show that is otherwise pretty spot on with the casting.

Assassin's Creed - Disappointing, but not as much as I thought it would be. It had good moments, most of the Animus scenes were great (and the "Hollywood mechanical arm edition" of the Animus was a pretty interesting idea even though it interrupted the past stuff too often) and Fassbender did an okay job, but the present day storyline has really taken over the movie, the rest of the casting was really bad and I felt like it ended with a whimper. Also it sucks that pretty much all of
Maria's
cool scenes were shown in the trailer. God damn it I need to remember to stay as far away from the trailers as possible.

I thought he was good, but also I think the first couple episodes of that show felt off in general. Once you're into like episode 4 or so, it starts to hit its stride.

Leave Juice alone!

Yeah, he's the real weak link of that fantastic cast.

Oof, I mean, opinions and all but ...
latest

Opening space battle, General Grievous four lightsabers, and the final lightsaber battle(s), though.

Plus Leia remembers how sad her mother was during her childbirth death scene!

Sith is my third favorite Star Wars movie, faults and all. It has a lot of goofiness in there, but it has some great moments in there that elevate things.

I didn't watch all of the series. It's in the backlog but what bad casting for OJ. How you gonna get this high pitched raspy dude to play a man known for such a large stature and booming voice.

I'm watching Logan. If it's trash, gaf will, hopefully, refund me the ticket price.

Also watched Black Mirror S3. Fell in love with San Junipero. Haven't watched the latest one though. Outside of that one, it seems like the season is mostly a variation of what Brooker did before.

I do have to say it's a shame charlie brooker is stuck on tv. Come on dude, move forward and play within the ivy league.

Seeing Personal Shopper tonight. Super excited since it's my most anticipated film of this year. Please be good...

Looking forward to impressions! It's hitting Canada on the 24th, I believe, really looking forward to it!

I'm watching Logan. If it's trash, gaf will, hopefully, refund me the ticket price.

I can give you a $5 off coupon code for Atom Tickets if you don't like it. (It's not a secret or anything, though, haha, anyone can use the code and get five bucks off.)

5 off eheh. You americans. I'm paying 3.2€ for the ticket. 5 off is the whole thing.

3 euro? You should be paying US to see it, christ.

For real. Who's answer for "who can we get that can play a big football player who's charismatic and charming but also super imposing" was fuckin Cuba Gooding Jr.

I mentioned it before but I heard an interview with the director who said they chose Cuba based on the perception of Cuba being similar to OJ at the time. Like the thought of Cuba being accused of killing someone is as crazy as hearing OJ did. Or like the Wayne Brady choke a bitch sketch. Of course if he's also turning in a shit performance I can't help you there. I haven't seen it.

Appreciate someone standing up for ROTS, has a special place in my heart.

Would've picked Revenge Of The Sith if it weren't for Batman Begins honestly.

Same goes with The Force Awakens had Mad Max not wiped the floor with every movie made that year (or this decade).
