Marvel vs. Capcom 2
Having already shattered the hopes of Wii owners that the upcoming digital re-release of Marvel vs. Capcom 2 would also appear on their console of choice, Capcom is back with more bad news for everyone crossing their fingers that this re-release may mean the potential of a true sequel. Speaking to *******, Capcom community manager Seth Killian said the deal to port Marvel vs. Capcom 2 to the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 does not include the rights to potentially make another game in the series.
"The short answer is no, that's not any part of this deal," Killian said. "What we're hoping is that if people get really juiced about this title, and we can show Marvel that there's a lot of heat behind this, then they'll open up the door for us to do something with '3,' which is something we'd love to do." A realistic possibility, or an appeal to drum up sales? Let's all hope it's the former.
The key issue here is licensing, as Capcom lost the rights to make Marvel games not long after porting MvC2 to the PlayStation 2 back in 2002. Killian also said that licensing issues are what's holding up bringing Tatsunoko vs. Capcom to North America as well. "The rights holders for Tatsunoko in Japan are one company, but in the U.S. it's...13 companies -- and some are very attentive and some are not," he explained.
And in one last interesting tidbit, Killian also revealed that Capcom is considering releasing MvC2-branded fight sticks for the 360 and PS3 -- but it's not the MadCatz stick that popped up on an online retailer a few weeks back. "If you saw the 'leak' of those MadCatz sticks, that was actually B.S.," Killian said. "That was a complete fabrication, but it's something we would love to do."
