My white Manager says my ringtone makes him uncomfortable

Yikes.

There is nowhere near enough info to jump to that conclusion. If this manager is in charge of a professional office he is likely just as uncomfortable as any other annoying ringtone. And that's what that ringtone is, annoying, unprofessional and distracting as fuck.

But no, automatically racist, because.

He was being sarcastic if I read it correctly...

Nothing's going to change unless we change it. Challenge what's appropriate (just don't violate GAFs TOS).. Own the new normal. Write your own future.

or maybe dont choose "ringtone song" as your platform for civil rights reform?

Its a workplace. just be an adult and change it. it doesnt matter what the content of it is, its a professional enviroment. be a professional.

Like im gonna start going to work naked so i OWN THE NEW NORMAL. WRITING MY OWN FUTURE. OR Maybe im just an asshole who wont put on a pair of pants.

Absolutely get the request in writing, and then check to see if you are breaking any rules (you probably aren't). Then you're good, and can contest any write up he tries to do.

Pretty sure most jobs have blanket clauses that allow them leeway in situations like this. I know it's cute to play lawyer but in real life you have to pick and choose your battles.

If you value your employment you simply don't fight this battle.

If OP works with customers a lot it's a really unprofessional ringtone to have, one of several hundred million

If OP just works in an office it's a bit different but still not the best idea

It's just as inappropriate. Unless the office culture is FILLED with dick jokes, loud profanity, harambe memes, nudie magazines, strippers and general craziness.

My general rule is: Would my boss's boss be cool with it. And if the answer is "no" then don't do whatever that shit is.

OP should have freedom of ringtone.

He does. Outside of the workplace he can do whatever he wants, but come on. You're at work. There are standards that everyone must abide by.Be a professional and put it on vibrate.

Custom ringtones are fucking ridiculously outdated anyway. People with them now look like idiots. Honestly, when was the last time you heard one of these go off in public and not think to yourself that that person was a moron?

I have a custom ringtone. Why? Because Zelda is my shit, fuck the haters. But my phone is muted on the train to work and stays muted until I get off the train @ home.

I really do not see how anyone else could see it any other way. It's unprofessional as fuck to begin with even excluding the content. You never know exactly who you maybe helping at the time or listening. It's no different than going in with a dumb ass saying on a shirt.

And if its in the office place. it only takes one person to be offended by it and one complaint to HR. FYI, at an old position, I did have to report a co worker for not continually doing their portion of the job. My boss went to them and said "I noticed you haven't been doing this or filling out the work forms for it". Not once, did she indicate I reported him since she knew it would affect out working relationship. Your manager could be saying they are, when really it's Julie down the corner, who may choose to report your ass to HR next if you don't change it.

To the OP, it's not your choice on who can be offended by it or not. So over a ringtone, I don't think this is a battle you want.

It's unprofessional to have a ringtone like that in many office settings, it's a funny ringtone that has its place outside of the office, keep it on vibrate at work if you can't live without it and all parties will be happy. Those calling for the boss to be fired, should he be fired if the dude wears pajamas to work too? Office dress code doesn't stop at the color tie you're wearing.

I had a friend whose phone would play the entirety of Mad World by Gary Jules, every time he got a text message.

When he forgot his phone in the classroom, people would always go "No don't turn it off, it's such a nice song".

If you wanna be a cheeky bastard OP,

You should get a random instrumental and record yourself saying

"Im oppressed y'all, Im oppressed y'all, My manager made me change my ringtone!!!"

Don't do it

People who have their ringers on during the work day are the worst. I couldn't care less about what song you play.

But then he'd become the workplace snitch that he dislikes.

OP either dies a hero, or lives long enough to see himself become the villain.

how so? Even taking his previous thread into context... he wouldn't be doing the same thing? OP wouldn't be going to HR but daring his manager to go to HR... who would more than likely laugh in his manager's face and tell him to stfu because they would not want to touch this (potential) mess w/ a 10ft pole. xD

in fact OP's manager would probs get a write-up/or fired just to be on the safe side.

This is an awfully stupid hill to choose to die on.

Taking this to HR isn't going to end favorably for you, either. For those of you who haven't interacted with HR in a real investigation before, take heed: HR isn't there to help you.

Change your ringtone to Lupe Fiasco's The Coolest. Take it all the way to HR and if they don't do anything about it, call your local news station.

Im at a job where we require the use of our cell phones. Everyone has their own ringtone. I recently changed mine to this.

My manager pulled me aside and said that it makes him uncomfortable and to have to change it or risk a write up.

Gaf what are your thoughts? Is my ringtone offensive? Should I fight or comply?

Are other people's ringtones singing w/ lyrics as well or just chip tunes?

If it's the former, then he's likely singling you out unfairly - make a mental note and move on. Not a worthy battle IMO.

If the latter then turn that shit off and get back to work bro.

Lodge your own complaint to HR about him being a racist ass.

Don't do this. Just change your ringtone or set your phone to silent. This is not worth the hassle and more than likely the company will not side with you. Your manager didn't say anything specifically racist. Being uncomfortable because of a ringtone that is fine but a bit unprofessional is not grounds for proving racism.

It's obviously inappropriate for the workplace you complete and utter idiot, I mean imagine that ringing when you're talking to senior management for god's sake.

This is a problematic ring tone. Because I'd never pick up the phone so I could keep listening.

Seriously, it's hilarious. lol

I guess it's inappropriate if you work in some serious office. nofunallowed.jpg
