NBA 2K21 PS5 Trailer - 3 'free' myTeam packs a month with PS+

This is Bluepoint we're talking about! not FromSoftware.

a from game by design just isn't typically going to impress like that, that's what I mean. Upgrades visually typically will just look like textrure, particle and lighting enhancements.
The game doesn't usually lend itself to facial animations, or anything that requires alot of CPU prowess. hence why ratchet looks more next gen for example, alot more going on on the CPU end

There seems to be a haze in the PS4 version. Never noticed that before.
Not a haze, it’s a more limited lighting model. Can’t be 100% sure, but I believe it’s due to the use of a fake minimum ambient light vs dynamic lighting. Most current gen games have this washed out “haze” in darker areas, including technical marvels like doom eternal and TLOU2.
We should be seeing a lot of improvements like this next gen. DMCV special edition already shows a similar de-hazing effect with its ray traced lighting:

It looks great, but they might want to tone down the specularity on the sweat. It glistens like grease, instead of water. Transition animations might need to be smoothed out too, but that might also be a product of the framerate. Get the locked at 30 or 60fps. This game is gonna be dope. Hopefully they've ditched the casino bullshit.

Personally, I'm seeing a mixed bag.

Some amazing stuff, but also some bad frame rates (some maybe due to finalizing code, some maybe due to they uploaded a 30fps video?)

And still, somehow, it looks kind of cartoonish. I was hoping the lighting change might fix this......

Still excited to try it.

I wouldn't say it is the best expression of next gen but we have some good stuff here, definitely players 3d models are on another level as well as illumination and players animations that are really close to reality thanks to the perfect blending between them, public is still meh but improved as well, definitely 3d meshes are improved for npcs like coaches and referee, probably some Raytracing on the parquet. To be a lauch game is a good start, for sure it will make a step further in 2022 version whereas it will be more focused on next-gen and will come to pc too where thanks to mods will get REAL

Why people say it's not coming to PC? Is it console exclusive? I don't play those games. It looks wonderful in some parts, gamey on others. But it's a good start.

The current gen version is available on PC, but not this next gen version apparently. Unless they update the current PC version to match this one, PC won't see a version on par with the PS5/SeX one until 2K22.

Is that ray tracing on the court?

There could be some for select areas but there's quite a few occlusion artifacts common with SSR (Screen Space Reflections), particularly in the cinematics. Given the camera angle, distance and surface roughness, SSR would probably make sense for most of it in terms of reflection quality and performance. SSR with RT as a fallback for occluded/off-screen stuff would be the best approach imo.

I think RT would be better utilised for Emissives and Shadowing/Ambient Occlusion here, to better plant assets in the world.

Reminds me of NBA Live 06 in creating a big next gen moment (360) granted this is 10x better than Live.

Dang, I never thought about that before but TLOU2 does have that haze effect. Interesting.

I'm not trying to be a douche but what were your expectations?
For reference I play on PC. To me it looks like updated textures, better DOF, same bones.

My unrealistic expectation was better animations. The trailer is hype, but playing current gen, the focus on faces doesn't excite me too much. I know these great expressions will awkwardly transiltion into resting faces. The fps during cutscenes being a bit chincy is also a turnoff. To be fair, it's probably not final. I don't mind playing on PC but would rather play on console. At this point, I'll see how 2k22 goes. Despite sounding maybe negative, I want to reiterate, nothing bad with what I'm seeing, but also - nothing amazing.

Now that I look back at these trailers for NBA2k14 I think NBA 2k21 next gen actually looks better than this and the gameplay looks smoother from what we have seen so far.
The player models and faces are definitely much better now, but there's something about the lighting in 2K14 that just makes it look amazing.

Also, some more next-gen gameplay info/gifs/short vids here;

I see where you're coming from. Come to think of it at some point during the video i thought to myself "it might look good but they still have to slide and teleport models around to get them to fit into the game of basketball", which i guess is pretty similar to your points~ i guess it is a hectic game that must be really hard to blend together.. but yeah, it's not perfected, as you say
