They're probably using an invisible simple volumetric mesh to create those shadows in order to save/enhance performance.

They need to do something about the weird textures. The courts themselves look fine, but the players don't fit in so well. I like what they've done with the faces, with the exception of Iverson who I can't make out properly (though the first pic, even with the funny angle, looks nothing like him).
