Tbh, my top 6 is more solid and easier to assemble than my last 4.

I feel like my last is pretty interchangeable. Tried to have some variety in there.

Oh boy, I know more or less how to rank other mediums, but films... What metric do you even use? It's so diverse that it's pretty much impossible to rank them.

Try looking at it as an artform (filmmaking)

Not trying to sound condescending or anything but once you know what goes into the craft it might make it easier. Or you can just go with what you enjoy the most- I guess. Not everyone is looking for the same things when watching a movie.

I'm not the best with lists but I gave it a shot! Mine often change, at least the movies on the lower half of the list.

:/

Films aren't more or less diverse than other mediums.

And I don't think anybody is asking for a definitive ranking, just a rough estimate of either your favorite films, or what you consider to be the best films you've seen, or some combination of the two.

They most definitely are IMO.

They combine just about every art form/medium.

it's not hard, all movies are made by using the same fundamental elements, just like any other media, although obviously more multifaceted. the only thing that varies is the quality of said elements

in my opinion though, it's not possible to have only one best movie of all time, so in a sense you're correct. there are too many of them

2. The Magnificent Ambersons
3. High and Low
4. Vertigo
5. 2001: A Space Odyssey
6. The Godfather Part II
7. Casablanca
8. The Best Years of Our Lives
9. Taxi Driver
10. The Road Warrior

Honorable mentions:

Alien
Sunset Blvd
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
The Godfather
The Big Country
A Clockwork Orange

This was so tough I could have easily made the honorable mentions 20 films, but decided to limit it to movies I put on my list then removed (and put back on again). My top 3 is pretty set in stone, though.

I feel like I'm not enough of a film buff to make a "real" best of all time list. It has to be personal one. So I chose films that I love and want to watch over and over again. I am sure there are in many ways a lot of better films out there, but for me, these are the ones I always return to.

1) Sunshine
2) Children of Men
3) Terminator 2: Judgement Day
4) The Last of the Mohicans
5) Alien
6) Aliens
7) Blade Runner
8) Watchmen
9) The Dark Knight
10) Mad Max: Fury Road

Not the most original list, nor am I 100% happy with it, but apparently you can only cram 10 movies in a top 10. So this will have to do.

I haven't updated my top 10 in years. Let's see if anything from the last decade made it in.

01- 2001:A Space Odyssey
02- Apocalypse Now
03- Aliens
04- Alien
05- Blade Runner
06- The Shining
07- LotR: Return of the King
08- Terminator 2
09- Tron Legacy
10- Drive

Look at that, two movies from this decade. It's hard putting more recent stuff next to timeless classics. But it makes me wonder if I'm really being honest when I put stuff like T2 up there. I've seen it so many times I'm kind of sick of it. But on the other hand, these movies helped shape who I am.

Anyway, I know there's no points left to give but I'm gonna continue the list for the hell of it.

11 - The Matrix
12 - District 9
13 - Under the Skin
14 - Kill Bill
15 - A.I.
16 - Fight Club
17 - Jurassic Park
18 - Clockwork Orange
19 - Saving Private Ryan
20 - Stalker
21 - Eraserhead
22 - Robocop
23 - Stalker
24 - Barry Lyndon
25 - Once Upon a Time in the West
26 - Mad Max: Fury Road
27 - The Blair Witch Project
28 - Dredd
29 - Gerry
30 - Eyes Wide Shut
31 - Interstellar
32 - Watchmen
33 - Beyond the Black Rainbow
34 - Gravity
35 - The Hitcher
36 - Gattaca
37 - The Thing
38 - Titanic
39 - Touching the Void
40 - Starman
41 - The Elephant Man
42 - Seven
43 - Starship Troopers
44 - Taxi Driver
45 - The Terminator
46 - Cast Away
47 - Schindler's List
48 - Vanishing Point
49 - Paris Texas
50 - Forbidden Planet

1. The Empire Strikes Back (1980) ; Best action adventure, had to cut Indy for it.
2. Fight Club (1999)
3. Seven Samurai (1954) ; I might have had the most fun with Sanjuro from the Kurosawa movies, but I'm not sure whether I'll ever be able to rewatch that one anywhere, anytime soon.
4. Inglourious Basterds (2009) ; toss-up between this and Kill Bill Vol. 2.
5. Léon (1994)
6. There Will be Blood (2007)
7. Batman Begins (2005)
8. Men in Black (1997) ; toss-up between this and Rush Hour 2 for buddy cop comedies which are generally cool and I could laugh about even after dozens of rewatches (and humour usually already loses me the second time).
9. The Thing (1982) ; toss-up between this and Alien. Unfortunately, the sequels and Prometheus kinda harmed the latter a little for me.
10. The Third Man (1949) ; Last decision boiled down to either this or One flew over the Cuckoos Nest.

Thinking of doing the same. Hah. Right now I'd put it at #9. Need to see it a few more times to be sure. I don't think it can touch The Road Warrior, maybe it's too fantastical. Not sure. The fact it cracked the top 10 at all is pretty amazing.

It's hard to separate the objective from the subjective; there are films I love watching over and over, have great personal attachment to, or find certain qualities in them breathtaking, but would not in good conscience put them in the Top 10 of all time. Having said that:

1. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (Gondry, 2004)
2. The Seven Samurai (Kurosawa, 1954)
3. Tampopo (Itami, 1985)

Holy shit, cutting it down to just ten was agonizing.

I've seen it come up a few times so if you have trouble making a list, just list your favorite movies to watch regardless of their quality. It's much easier to do. Just think about which movies you have watched the most for some good ideas. For some people, favorite and best overall quality are the same but for a lot of people they are different. I actually think it's way more interesting to see people's favorites to watch. More diverse and not populated with a lot of the same movies that appear in these types of polls. I personally chose to go with my favorites and several others have as well. My list would be different had I chosen to base my selection on quality but it would have been more difficult for me to make choices so I went with the other option. There's nothing wrong with the guy who put Transformers down. It's a fun blockbuster to watch. Also, people's favorites can be affected by outside factors. Maybe there was a time in your life where you were watching movies and those experiences really stayed with you. I can identify with this. There's also nothing wrong with listing only current movies. Some people have a hard time identifying with movies that were made before they were born. I have seen thousands of movies and even owned a video store at one point in my life but I generally don't care for any movies pre-1980 (born 1979). There are tons of exceptions (and I own several from before 1980) but as a general sentiment, they are not my cup of tea. Nothing wrong with that. So don't feel discouraged by some of the people in this thread. Post what you like and don't worry about it.
