NeoGAF's Essential RPGs - 2013 edition - Top 100 results posted

Pokemon Fans just consolidated their votes this year. Pokemon Gold/Silver (and remakes) narrowly missed the Top 10. Last year's top 50 had two Poke titles, but they were both in the #30-50 range.
One of these days I need to ask what's so jawdroppingly amazing about Gold/Silver/Crystal/HeartGold/SoulSilver compared to Gens 3-5.
Is it the whole "unlock all of Kanto, face another 8 gym leaders, confront Red" aspect of it or something else entirely?

May need to peruse some of the comments folks have made in their ballots about it.

Damn, I was working on a list and just forgot to finish it and get it up. Oh well, going to broaden my RPG-horizons this year based on this list, thanks for the input everyone!

Skyrim being number 4 last year will forever be GAF's greatest shame to me.

Yep, I'd even accept Oblivion over Skyrim.

Just finished P4 true end, my top 3 RPGs would be Valkyrie Profile > Persona 4 (just the original) > Tales of Vesperia. I feel pretty good about that placing them like that.

Here is the Top 10 for this year:

1) Chrono Trigger - 165 points
2) Persona 4 - 141
3) Final Fantasy 6 - 137
4) Xenoblade - 111
5) Dark Souls - 101
6) Planescape: Torment - 76
7) Final Fantasy 9 - 75
8) Final Fantasy 7 - 72
9) Baldur's Gate 2 - 69
10) Final Fantasy Tactics - 68

It's a shame Suikoden 2 dropped out of the top ten. Sadly, until Konami/Sony get the game on PSN, it's not likely that support for the game will grow.

I am shocked at FF9's placement. It's not a bad game by any means, but is everyone else playing some hacked version I'm not aware of -- one that makes the battle speed tolerable?

On a less snippy note, I've been working through my backlog over the last couple of weeks, and I am excited to say that one of the games I'm playing is very likely to make my list next year, at least as an honorable mention. It would be the second western RPG on my list. Best of all, my decision to finally play the game was largely inspired by this thread.

It is going to take me awhile to finish the OP, but you can see banners for the first 5 games (plus summaries for the first two) in the first post. Thanks to Dark Schala for the summaries.

I will be adding quotes from people's personal lists to the aggregate top 50 after I finish up the banners and summaries.

Instead of the three screenshots for each game (like I did in previous years) I am thinking of including Youtube links to gameplay samples. That may be of more use to those interested in the games. If you know of any decent (spoiler-light) gameplay vids for the top 10, let me know!

Also, would a few links to songs from the soundtrack be of interest? Say 2-3 standouts per game?

EDIT: I will also add a banner legend to the OP explaining what the cost icons mean.

Tallying is done for 320 games. The 40 titles remaining are all 1-2 vote games that won't make the final list.

7) Final Fantasy 9 - 75
8) Final Fantasy 7 - 72
9) Baldur's Gate 2 - 69
10) Final Fantasy Tactics - 68

16 wrpgs made the top 50, and 28 made the top 100. Almost the same proportions as last year (although some titles are different).

I will start working on the OP tomorrow, starting with those games.

Grandia and Trails in the Sky tied for #49

Guess now I should continue my P4 playthrough (up to the bathhouse) instead of sitting around reading this thread! Also can't complain at Planescape: Torment being the highest ranked western RPG either. It's definitely one of the best I've ever played. Only game I never played on the top 10 is Baldur's Gate 2. Never got around to it for some reason.

Now that right there is an embarrassment to gaming :(

A decent amount of people posting here may not have grown up with RPGs on the PC. Fallout 3 and a few hours of Vegas (I need to get back to that soon) are my only exposure to the series, unfortunately. I still greatly enjoyed my time with Fallout 3, though!

Spoiler-lite will be difficult for the gameplay videos, but I can put you on some songs! :D

Now I feel kinda embarrassed for taking 90 hours to beat Dark Souls :<

Never feel embarassed beating a Souls game. That is not a forgone conclusion.

Completion times are based on HLTB averages for Main Story and Main Story +. If you did everything, your times are going to be longer than what is listed. If you rushed through the game with little to no restarts, your time will be shorter. I just wanted to give people a guideline. Sometimes you want to play a 90 hour epic, and other times you don't.

I consider anything from the first hour or so to be spoiler-lite. I'm basically looking for the stuff that would make it into a demo, but not ruin someone's gaming experience.

I wish I could have willed the Witcher 2 in the top 10 but I know for many people it's not even the best game in the series. I feel like they made that game for me.

It's in the top 20.

EDIT: I will eventually be posting the Top 100 games in the OP, but I am selfishly holding it back for now while I work on the banners and summaries for the top 50. If I posted the whole list now, no one would bother looking at the final OP, and that was sort of the point of this thread (along with everyone's individual recommendations) :P

Nah, don't feel bad. It took me a little over 100 hours to beat P4, and I didn't even do everything. Some of us just take longer than others.

So I guess that based on this thread, I should probably play FF6 and Planescape.

Very happy to see Persona 4 get number 2. I highly approve of the top 5.

I should probably give Final Fantasy 9 another chance sometime. I never got into it for some reason.

This is a pretty good top 10 list. Glad to see Skyrim getting knocked out, totally not deserving of the slot it got last year.

Nice to see Chrono Trigger and Dark Souls regarded so highly. Feel like I did my part. I feel bummed out I didn't add Skyrim to my list though. Such an amazing experience of a game I am only now just discovering on PC.

Also, something is telling me I should finally start playing P4G. I haven't even touched it yet and I'm on vacation so now seems a good enough time as any.

Did KOTOR even make the Top 50? :(

In the top 15

I added banners for the rest of the top 10. SatelliteOfLove provided me with soundtrack and gameplay links for the top 10 so I will be adding those in as well (thanks!) I'm waiting on summaries for a handful of games, but I am hoping to have most of the top 20-25 up tonight. I will get to the rest tomorrow.

Like the updated graphics on the top 10 list especially with how each game has moved since last year but where are the total points and bonus points stats?

That will likely be in the Top 100 list, which we won't get until after the full Top 50 stats are uploaded.

You got it. Add to that the fact that they took away night/day in Ruby/S/E. I also innocently completed Sapphire near launch fully expecting both Kanto and Jotho to be on there.

In the top 15

YES!

Game needs to be played by everyone. Graphics/optimization aside, I'd argue it's a perfect game.

EDIT: Wow, your OP is looking REALLY good. Nice work.

EDIT 2: Just fyi, looks like you have the wrong art for FF9.

EDIT 3: Man, Square really killed it with this list. So sad how far they've fallen from grace.

Man, as much as I'd like to play Persona 4, I absolutely hated the Highschool parts, and the pace and dialogue seemed a bit off to me.... I couldn't get into P3 either. I liked both Valkyria Chronicles a lot and pray I get to play 3 one day, but the highschool stuff repelled me in Persona 4. I really did not like Xenoblade at all either... But both will get a retry from me.

I really did not get into FFVI(My favorite is Kefka-less III) either, so I will retry that again too at some point.

Does The Last Remnant appear anywhere? I bought it because people here said it is better than Lost Odyssey... I

I've never played a Persona. I don't get it - at all. I've watched quite a few videos and followed some OTs, but it still doesn't click. Is it a high school simulator? What is the story about? Is the story good? Why are people so drawn to it?

I need to give it a shot - maybe I'll buy my Vita a new game here soon.

Is the Vita version that much better than the PS2 original? I don't get the love either but was only willing to try and run it on PCSX2; with all the Vita price drops and the PS+ goodies I could very likely push for one for my birthday coming up quite soon. Especially with more Trails in the Skies stuff coming.(Although no hope on localizations?) It is also a lot more reasonable than the TMZ-H1/Occulus Rift I was planning on trying to collect funds for.

Well, reading through the thread might give you a better idea of why people like Persona 4 (bear in mind that the Personas before P3 are a different beast all together). The story's premise is pretty cool: a high school student moves to a small town to stay with his uncle; just after he arrives, a series of gruesome murders occurs; meanwhile, there's a rumor going around at school that on rainy nights the television will tune to a mysterious station that can reveal your true love.

The gameplay is part social sim and part dungeon-crawling RPG. The traditional jRPG elements are pretty strong - fast-paced but challenging combat, a good strategic layer with demon fusion (have you played any Megaten games?). The social sim side of things can be fun too, but if you really hate that sort of game, then I would hesitate to recommend P4 to you.

I think The Last Remnant is loved by a very small minority so it might not appear at all. Who knows.
The Last Remnant did not make the Top 50 cut but I believe it does show up in the Top 100 and did fare better than some other noteworthy current gen JRPGs including Lost Odyssey, Blue Dragon, Resonance of Fate, all of the Tales games not named Vesperia and both Final Fantasy XIII installments. That's not such a bad showing.

Especially with more Trails in the Skies stuff coming.(Although no hope on localizations?)
Still no word on more Sora no Kiseki game releases... BUT I can pass along that the Trails in the Sky anime OVA hit DVD and BluRay just a couple weeks ago.
You can find it on Amazon here.

Thanks! I don't mind the social sim stuff - it just seems so, so... so weird? I guess it's just an odd-mashup, and I feel there must be something more to it, and I'm missing that piece that connects why a JRPG with strategic combat would be mixed with a dating/social sim. But I suppose that piece I'm missing doesn't exist - it just is what it is, and that's why people like it.

No, (it's actually lower), but it is still great.

It's funny you mention TitS, that and Persona in my mind are at the forefront of quality light-hearted dialogue for the genre, it's just that they're not ushering in an age of better light-hearted dialogue like I'd hoped, though...

I'd like for Resonance of Fate to be more appreciated, the battle system is amazing and I love the setting. It's such an unique game... It's too bad it does such a poor job of explaining the battle mechanics to the player, but once it clicks and you start exploiting the little subsystems within the battle engine, it's so rewarding.

Probably this gen most underrated (and best IMO) JRPG, SEGA sent it to die when they released it so close to FF13... Wtf were they thinking?

I'll post the next set of games shortly. I just have a bunch of ties that need to be broken.

Ties will be broken as such:

1) Number of times a game received 3 points
2) If two games are still tied after step 1, the game with the lowest number of Honorable Mentions will be listed first.

EDIT 2: Just fyi, looks like you have the wrong art for FF9.

The Artwork is correct. Amano's stuff is a bit abstract, but the tiny characters in that pic are Zidane and Garnet. Here is a bigger version:

Persona 4 just needs to be experienced, it's hard to put into words why it's so good because it's a combination of a lot of stuff. There are no rpgs like it that's for sure.
