New build of Killzone Shadow Fall shows improvements

This looks really nice but the shooting mechanics look a lot like KZ3 to me, which is a disappointment. Killzone 2, for all the complaints people seemed to have about it, had some of the best and most unique shooting/combat I've ever played. I was hoping for a return to that. Still looks alright though.

Ok Arnie, I get where you're coming from about feathering shots now. But to clarify on that point, firstly, GG have already stated they are still sorting out recoil and that it is unfinished. Secondly, the main weapon in the video is an electric pulse rifle of sorts, it's unlikely to have much recoil, and will probably just have less damage or something else to counter that. Thirdly, excess recoil does not always necessarily mean you have to feather shots, without being overly boastful, I was a very good CSS player, played with clans in proper leagues etc. And even in CSS you can still spray, you just have to control the recoil by way of counter movement and balance (something that's almost impossible to tell on video, since it all occurs at a control input level)).

For example, there would be many a moment where you're surrounded by enemies that burst fire (or feathered shots) are simply not ideal and waste too much time, and instead you would do one long burst, but control it with a particular spray that would hit all targets. The great thing with CSS is that every gun had different recoil characteristics and it took skill to master them.
I know absolutely where you're coming from with that. Sometimes, with the AK for example, you had no choice but to spray and try and control it by aiming contrary to your interpretation of the spread in this specific situation. It offered, as you say, continuous depth to the mechanics that could be learnt and mastered.

Crucially, however, it was satisfying because you knew opponents were also wrestling with the mechanics to kill you. If the core mechanics in Shadow Fall make encounters so, to put it bluntly, mindless then you won't have this result. If three players in Shadow Fall corner one player, it appears to be borderline impossible for said three to not drop the one because of how mechanically shallow the encounters appear.

If a player can hold the trigger down with an LMG and barely miss a bullet from eight feet then I just can't see this game having much depth. This is the core of my complaint, and why, despite it being a visual feast, and despite me saying it's a must purchase title for anyone buying a PS4, I can't see it gaining much traction months down the line when the initial aesthetic anaesthetic has faded and people are drawn back by how the game plays, not how it looks.

As I've said several times over, I really would not worry about that side of things. If devs themselves have stated that they're working on it, and the franchise itself has a flawless track record with it, there is really no reason to assume Shadow Fall will drop the ball on that front.
I know you've reiterated it, and I know they've said it, but it's October and we've yet to see a video demonstrating it. I'm just commenting on what I see. When I see mechanics as deep as Killzone 2 I'll be the first to applaud.

And I believe there's a huge difference between Killzone 2 and 3 regarding what we've been discussing, so I absolutely don't agree with your 'flawless track record' comment. I felt they CODified (such a horrendous term) Killzone 3 and as such I'm frustrated with what I'm seeing from Shadow Fall because it doesn't appear to be reversing this.

What are those particles in the air?

I think they're the glowing bullet hits against the wall burned into the viewer's camera's CCD for a few frames (this looks like off-screen footage)? Or maybe that's an effect within the game like the video distortion tom-foolery in Kane&Lynch 2?

I'm not really much of an FPS player but I'm diggin' the look of this. Cautiously hype-temistic.

I made a transcript of the conversation going on in the background during the video (as best I could). It appears to be between two broken-english interviewers and what sounds like Herman Hulst.

Herman Hulst:
There are several objectives and I can do them in whatever order I want. So, pick one. Do you want me to go here first? The smoke? Or you want me to go to the [something]? Smoke?

Man 1:
Yeah. So, is this Vekta or someplace else?

Herman Hulst:
This is Vekta. This is the Helgan side of Vekta.

Man 2:
So the Vekta was separated? How..

Herman Hulst:
Yes. There is a huge wall and they have divided the planet in two.

Man 2:
So, how many RAM does the game use at this moment?

Herman Hulst:
Uhh…no comment. I wasn't one of the programmers on this. I couldn't even tell you.

Man 2:
Because I heard that the game were using 4GB of RAM in the old builds.

Herman Hulst:
Uh, again I couldn't say.

Man 2:
So you can rappel up to everything?

Herman Hulst:
Yes, as long as you are in a higher position. So if you're higher than the point you're repelling to I can even repel… close… a small section. As long as you are a higher position and a range of about 50 meters.

Man 1:
So the Drone has a life meter?

Herman Hulst:
It has [a lot of life?]. I can choose the [something] by swiping the d-pad… sorry… by swiping the touch pad and activate it by pressing the d-pad.

Herman Hulst:
At the top you can see the health, the white bar. If it gets damaged it will go to your back and recharges.

Man 1:
Did [something] survive after Killzone 3?

Herman Hulst:
What was that?

Man 1:
Uh, did the [something] survive after the..

Man 2:
No, I think they will no want spoilers. Okay, we will ask very politely. [laughs] Will we see any old characters from the previous Killzones?

Herman Hulst:
Uh… you will have to play the game to see that.

Man 1 and 2:
Okay [laughs].

Man 2:
It looks really nice.

Herman Hulst:
Thank you.

Man 1:
Yeah.

No, it's dust. It's very dusty so there is a cloud of dust particles floating in the air.

I can't tell if you're joking, trolling me or just have issues with your eye sight. Please everybody watch the two links I posted of the two weapons with recoil and tell me those ADS sights aren't bouncing around all over the place.

I honestly think you have no idea what you're talking about. Add to that, you think 64 player multiplayer gaming is a "next gen gameplay" addition. It's like you started gaming yesterday....

I just watched the first video and there's literally no recoil, especially when they ADS, those guns are like lazers.

Game looking mighty fine with the new little additions. Looking forward to playing it myself eventually.

This is an old build. Devs have already stated that there was little to no recoil in this build but in the final game there will be more recoil.

Because all RPGs have great stories, right... Companies can hire people to do work. They could have recruited people with RPG experience. They probably have.

Have you tried Stalker games? They're pretty unforgiving.

No I have not and I'll take a look at them...

But its not just about unforgiving...its about that special sauce that DS games have...you get screwed in the ass but you still come back for more cuz its just addicting and you want to play and see what's beyond the current point. Its a unique balance of unforgiveness, reward, intrigue and exploration.

Looks really impressive graphically but it seems to be just more of the same. It's hard to get excited for it..

Never change GAF.

Fair enough. Out of curiosity, I noticed you lumbered BF in with Killzone and Counter Strike with the recoil mention. I realise it's better to feather shots with many weapons in BF4, but is this really that much more recoil? Doesn't seem it.

I played Shadow Fall MP at Eurogamer and it is has more weight and recoil than KZ3 has.

Oddly enough, their are no shadows cast by the gun shooting if you notice. Something that was in Kz2, was largely cut out in Kz3, and does not appear to be in this game.

I really thought was pretty cool in Kz2. The only other game to really do that was Metro 2033, even last light does not do that (no idea why not).

I think Crysis also does that.

Yeah, the next time I get to the GameStop where everything is preordered, I'm switching from BF4 to Killzone.

Playing Mercenary also got me itching for more Killzone.

Honestly, I think this will be the best received launch title. We all have nothing to go on but hunches, but I think Killzone will be the most pleasing to purchasers and will be regarded, in time, as the best title of both consoles launches.

I think it and F5 will likely be the highest rated exclusive games on both platforms

My exact expectation as well. It seems like they're going to be delivering a fully featured game that pushes the series forward on day one, which is a real feat if they pull it off. Graphically the game is insane too. Only Ryse is even in the same league on a technical level.

I know Call of Duty will sell well but most gamers I know are starting to get burned out on the series. Of course, my little world might be some pocket universe out of sorts with the rest of reality. If I had to predict I would say this one sells will sell about the same, if not slightly more than the last title but after that it will slowly trend downward as better developers begin to challenge them on next gen platforms.

My tune could certainly change but my core group of friends that used to get COD every year are skipping this one for KZSF and potentially Battlefield.

My brother and friend were going to get KZSF but are now just going to play Blacklight Retribution until Destiny comes out. :-/ I told them to at least try my copy of it before making a final decision, which they both agreed to.

Thats smart. Retribution sounds really fun too.

I have nothing against shooters, only that there's so many every year and they all seem to play the same. A new generation is coming and I'm a little frustrated that they seem to be the same still but with an admittedly really fucking nice new coat of paint.

Also does the game in that picture actually exist? Jesus.

Looks fucking amazing.

I've said it before but I'll say it again, Killzone being a launch title is the absolute best thing that could happen to the franchise. So many people are going to be buying it (it's the #1 pre-ordered game) and the community is going to blow up in size and popularity.

I think that's why Sony is getting both Killzone and inFamous out there early on. Neither franchise has huge followings but they're good and will get a lot more attention since they're going to be the only purely next gen FPS and open world games for a while. I think Sony wants to turn them both into flagship franchises.

is there a super duper hq video im missing. i can never see shit in these off-screen videos. at least not enough to comment on how something looks better... :\

I'm playing 3 for the first time right now and besides the resolution, the game just looks awesome. If it can smooth out the jaggies and artifacts...goddamn. I won't buy it since I don't buy any FPS for full price, but I'll probably rent it or snag it cheap when it hits $15 or so. FPS tend to be way too short and linear for my liking, and I don't play multiplayer. But I always enjoy the ride while they last.

Awesome!

Also, the video in the OP does look considerably improved.

I'm not sure if I'm imagining this, but I noticed the way the tree branches sway has changed from the E3 build. It seems like individual clusters of leaves sway independently now. In the older videos that I checked, it seemed like the entire branch swayed in one direction. Anybody else notice this? I could be seeing things, but a couple of frames in this video really caught my eye, unlike before!
