Pretty cool, OP, thanks for sharing!

The first and fourth Big The Cat sketches are amazing, that whimsy on the first, that stoner Hannah Barbera-ish look on the fourth.

Everyone post SA1 went with the best design for sure. Blaze is the only one with some alternates that could be ok besides the actual look she has now. Those Shadow, Big, and Cream prototypes are straight garbage and disrespectful lol.

Shadow's isn't too surprising if you remember the very first images/promo for SA2. I'm happy the design changed, but that's all I'm happy about concerning the history behind that mess of a game.
Nah, the very first SA2 images showed basically his final design.

And thank god. It's remarkable that, despite how much shit Shadow's design has gotten over the years, it could have been so much worse. The final design is downright fantastic is comparison.

Why does Big have a belt if he's not wearing any pants?
It's mainly a flotation device.

I'm talking before those, even. This was back when the game was still in development and there were only 2-3 playable characters planned.

EDIT: Actually I might be misremembering if that version of Shadow was shown off during that time. I think that was shown in later concept art, so I probably got my timelines mixed.

Eh the guy apparently is still the most popular non sonic character in the entire franchise, and he isn't even around that much anymore. So he isn't getting that much shit really.

That said though I like how his concepts were like " Wow we almost fucked that up "

Like seriously , these are the best . Like this was literally you almost fucked up your pile of money.

That second shot is from the very first footage ever shown for the game, haha. If there's anything earlier I neither remember it (despite following the game at the time) nor can I find it online.

Catalix

And on the sixth day the LORD David Bowie created man and woman in His image. And he saw that it was good. On the seventh day the LORD created videogames so that He might take the bloody day off for once.

Good lord those early Shadow designs. Hard to believe, but we really did end up with the lesser of evils.

Blaze is still one of the few cool looking modern Sonic characters, though. Both in the concept and final forms.

Check my edit, I goofed. :p

Since I'm traveling down memory lane, this is the post I touched upon that explains the tumultuous history behind SA2. (TL;DR - blame the fans)

The problem was that Sonic Team refused to confirm whether or not Tails was in the game, and apparently there was enough people out there who pestered Sonic Team at conventions and such about Tails not being in the game that Sonic Team announced they would be going back and putting in more "friendly faces" in the game, notably Tails. While not directly confirmed, there are suggestions that this signaled a pretty significant change in the whole entire design of Sonic Adventure 2.[...]
[...]Tails and likely Amy Rose were shoe-horned in (think about it: Amy contributes almost nothing to the story), and the overall plot was lightened up a little bit. But most importantly, the roster of playable characters went from 3 to 6, and the "team rivalry" system was born. Shadow was now playable, as was Rouge, to make up for the fact that Tails was now Dr. Eggman's rival.

It is somewhat likely that Shadow, Rouge and Tails were given levels that were intended for the branching path system. Whereas you would be presented with a choice that would either lead to LEVEL A or LEVEL B, now LEVEL A would be for Sonic and LEVEL B would be for Shadow. Unfortunately for Shadow, there probably weren't a lot of LEVEL B's to go around.

CRAWLING IN MY SKIN!!!!!
THESE WOUNDS THEY WILL NOT HEAL

with a concept like "telekinetic hedgehog from the future" im surprised his earlier concepts arent more wacky and weird
They all look like shit fanfiction, jebus

It's like they tried to keep Eggman's goofy aesthetics on his robots but realized that just wasn't going to work.
Now I'm really curious to see how Adventure 1 would've been if all the E-Series guys looked Disney robots.
