New DmC: Devil May Cry gameplay [Dante Redesigned Again]

Blue and orange are complimentary colors on the color wheel. Art 101. If it looks nice, why change it? Offhand, LA Noire is the only other game I can think of it to use it, and that's set against a black backdrop, so surely there can't be that many boxarts using the motif. Though for my own entertainment, I'm ready for someone to post a huge lineup of example boxarts showing otherwise. :)

Still can't get over what appears to be DE:HR's art director modeling Adam Jensen after himself. Reeks of douchiness, if true.

Also, all you people looking at the angel's ass, and I'm drooling over her legs, soles and toes.

Looks pretty cool to me. I love the concept art stuff too. I never thought original Dante was anything special anyway. And yeah.. dat angel girl ass.. and legs.. and maybe her feet since someone else already perved out before me.

Also for those keeping track of Dante's transformations:

Rihanna TGS Dante (also known as Twilight Dante):

I guess I'll be calling this design Rihante from now on, to distinguish it from the later redesigns of Dino.

Ok, some people are calling him Dante, just to make things clear.... HE'S NOT DANTE (maybe on another universe) but the DANTE we all know has white hair, he looks like a real man (not a emo)... so this piece of emo crap it's not Dante.

I was going to post that I still wasn't happy with the emo "wanabee" Dante, and other things... that's when I saw your post, read the quote and saw the gif... well I'm laughing to the point of crying in front of my PC since then... thx man you made my day :)

trust me, if i wasn't at work i'd grant you a gallery of all the box art that uses it. not just games either, movies too.

and just because it's a valid color wheel combo doesn't mean it should be whored out so often. why not pick something else that is in the color wheel? or hell, pick 3 colors? i'm not trying to overly bitch about it specifically with DmC, but while we're on the topic, it's extremely irritating seeing it used so much. especially when a dev talks about how it's trying to do new fresh things.

THIS PARTY'S GETTING KKKKKUUUURRRRRAAAAZZZZZZZZYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Dude has Rainstorm again. YES.

I'm as big a fan of DMC as the next guy, had my doubts, but this looks good. Count me in.

It's funny how, even though the later redesigns have brought Dino much closer to the tone of original Dante*, the same people cheering for the Rihante design, and lamenting how little they liked the original, are still cheering it and talk about the design being improved.

*)To clarify, there's still an abyss between the two, now it's just not a dimensional rift anymore.

You know, I'm looking at that trailer objectively, wondering what, if anything, Ninja Theory is bringing to the series gameplay-wise.

The answer is nothing. It looks like a DMC knockoff.

I always assume they reboot because they think a 'new angle' will... help sell more? Is it just because they think the game could reach more people? They don't seem to be changing anything that would have stopped people from buying it anyways.

I agree with Kimosabae on this. As an outsider Devil May Cry fans are pretty, uh...passionate? It sucks to be Ninja Theory, I wouldn't want to deal with this level of frenzied hyperbole. Not sure if I've seen a fan base like this before. (Not just this NeoGAF thread - some of the reactions/commentary on other sites.)

Odd, I'd consider any person who defends Ninja Theory equally fanatical given the utter shit they've consistently put out. Also the whole statement is utter bullshit, if any franchise with a strong following had a developer known for creating terrible games in that genre working on a title in it you'd get this reaction on GAF. On top of that you can just look at Megaman Legends to see a worst reaction to a game in recent history.

Anyway I'm not sure why they waited so long for this reveal when it looks like the same shit we've seen in other trailers. Framerate alone makes everything look sluggish and terrible because of it.

But... but the name of the series and game is DEVIL may Cry. Not... not HALF ANGEL/HALF DEVIL MIGHT SORT OF CRY. i think my brain is bleeding.

Another Cole McGrath fiasco.
They did the right thing with him in the end, though.

Sad that won't happen this time. Inexplicable character redesigns are a BAD thing.

Not to mention the slow framerate will kill this game.

We share the same mind my friend.... ;-)

Plus the really good atmosphere... the soundtracks... the script... and the cut scenes... the amazing art direction .

NT... what an underrated team :-( .
I notice how you didn't mention game-play. lol

To be fair, the half-human/half-demon back story is a cliche as well. I'm intrigued where they want to take this though. It's different and it opens it up to new possibilities.
This is way more cliche'. DMC never chose to delve too much into the back story and the ambiguity was welcomed in many regards. We just went from a rather opened Sparda interacting with a female human in some capacity to surely some battle between forces crap. That's what a ton of Japanese media does just to set the setting for action scenes piled up. The former was way better and had a mysterious touch.

I wonder if Dante will have an angel trigger... lol.
I'm guessing that his normal abilities will reflect his angel side and the devil side will be as we know it. I think this because the story is alluding to some cross-dimensional or dream-esque back-story. Typically, this is where Dante uses one of the angel/devil sides to escape the world or changes existences, etc...

Who knows though. Maybe we will be able to glide like Kratos now with dem wings. ;)

I think they're trying to find a medium. Something not immediately offensive to DMC fans, and something that is different enough to capture people put off by OG Dante design. People who liked Rihante are easier to please in general, as they share a communal optimism. As long as it's different, they'll appreciate.

I dont care how much still art and screenshot look;

if the in-game in motion looks off, it looks off.

edit:
Devil May Cry 4 sold very well and was considered as a financial success;
rebooting on top of a financial success is nonsensical and this is a reason why I think that nothing about this new DMC makes sense

More like a new angel, amirite?

The thing you guys are missing is, you know there are going to be costumes I would bet. And one of those costumes will be OG dante. Just to piss most of us off.

We at Capcom felt that the previous Devil May Cry games weren't resonating with our core angel demographic so we decided to give the series a stillrebirth while keeping high quality combat DNA the franchise is known for.

You are correct, in fact it now seems to be some sort of middle ground. What I found funny, though, is how those changes are seen as improvements.

This looks, um... meh. Kamiya is probably shaking his head lol.

I'll wait for Bayonetta 2.

It's barely the character design that makes people hate on this, I point at DMC4 which had an entirely new character, it didn't get this kind of pre-release hate. It's Ninja Theory being in charge, it's their attitude towards the fanbase, it's Capcom treating us like idiots, it's Unrealfuckingengine, it's the game itself not looking too hot, its a clusterfuck of terrible community management and PR.

And yeah...it's also the character redesign!

This is still my main issue with the game.

A few people defending the game are saying that they are glad to see Ninja Theory taking it in a new direction, but I'm not seeing what this new direction is exactly. It just appear to be trying to imitate the old DMC games except now we can expect Ninja Theory's trademark unresponsive controls.

EDIT: Fast typing this on an ipad so bear with me.

I liked what i saw for the most part. I think the visuals and use of colors is great. The animation in the combat can look a bit jerky, they need to smooth those out a bit.

But the important thing is that there you see dante cancelng in and out of special moves, freeform, which is the basis of dmc's combat, and its great that ninja theory gets that.

Also, the themes that ninja theory seems to be basing off from is more from Kamiyas dante, not Itsunos dante. Kamiyas dante, from the novels, to the bavkstory, even from interviiews with Kamiya way back in 2000, resembles more of a anti hero, a grimy dante tht " visited brothels and whore houses." later, in itsunos dmc games, ou get more of a pure hero, an over the top comic based character, teenage mutant ninja esque of sorts. Go back to the original devil may cy, dante was a lot more grounded, only really saying brief one liner to more insult his enemies. In itsunos dmc games, we get more speeches than one liners.

Ninja theory has been improving each and every time thy show this game, and if anyone from them is readng this thread, then keep up the good work. Color me intereted.

Ps: as for the devil and angel theme, that isnt much of a departure thematically. Sparda was a devil, and Eva, although human, wasnt painted as this angelic like person. A person pure, of no faults. Its really just an analagoys extension of an exsistent theme in Kamiyas Dmc.

In all, Kamiyas Dmc and all the related stuff that was released, ie artbooks, novel etc that never made it stateside showed a lot more backstory that nnja theory is using now, ten years later.

Maybe it because i still think the real dante s the Dmc1 dante that kamiya made, not the one in Itsunos combat simulators.

* Who is Dante – Explore Dante’s early years in a gripping narrative featuring familiar faces from the series alongside all new characters.

THIS WILL BE GOOD.

cant wait to see how they ruin redesign other chars

I thought the point going with western studio was to make something new for the series that appeal more to the western market, but now it's just shitty DMC clone that from the videos look slow as a headless turtle.

And they are even not sure about their redesign of Dante, and they just changed their biggest shit they have done and the new new dante is pretty boy again (so why they changed him in the first place?),to me it just seems that Noob Theory do not know what to do with this game at all.

Hey guess what Dahbomb.... Virgil is half-angel too now :D :D :D

Excited for this, both Heavenly Sword and Enslaved were better games than the last Capcom developed DMC (and 2)... so this should be a great improvement. I am also a fan of the look. The original look stopped been relevant after DMC3.

Enslaved was in no way a better action game than DMC 4. Your expectation that this will be a great improvement is completely unfounded.

Re: the angel thing, did they ever explicitly say what Dante's mom was before (or hint that she might be an angel)? I can't remember specifics about her.

Angels? Doesn't making him half demon, half angel completely demolish the story? Removing his human side removes his strongest connection to humanity, his mother. So there will be no struggle between human and demon sides (since he has no human side)? No Vergil/Dante split? No Eva as a human mother killed by demons?

So instead of being a bridge between super powered demons and humanity he's just some connecting force between one super powered side and another super powered side? People point to the story as the one thing that could be improved but I have to say the broad strokes so far seem much less interesting than the original series.
