what gets me is, WHY are people here so resistant to the idea that, damn, sony may actually pull it off.

yes, there have been some hiccups, but these videos tell a story of a company that looks to be defying all the naysayers who thought they'd never match the e3 demos.

i don't get some of you...do you not want an amazing next-gen experience?
 
I'm surprised that F5 presentation impressions haven't been typed up anywhere (it seems). I'd like to know if they something a bit more fleshed out than the two dragons deal from last year.
 
Yeah it took place

The lecture was on Thursday morning, and it went over really well. The talk description hadn't made it into the conference schedule (not even the white sheet addendum they add to the bags!) and I was worried that not many people would come. I mean, would you get to the show at 9 in the morning for something you didn't even know existed? But surprisingly I had a full house and people had to be turned away at the door. Okay, it was a small room. But it's still a nice feeling to have. I showed two Lair demos on my PS3 devkit and looked at various production assets in detail, fielded questions and even managed to finish on time (that's a first for me!). From what I hear the feedback has been very positive, and Softimage seemed to be happy with it, as well.

which, admittedly, has gotten me into trouble, seeing me banned twice in just the past few months.

i think sony is going to pull it off, and i'm not ashamed of saying i'm pulling for them to do it.

i'm not impressed by what's currently available, so i'm hoping sony delivers everything e3 promised.

If it's one thing amazing about PGR3 it's riding the Brooklyn Bridge especially towards NYC with that delicious skyline.

Regressing how? GRAW and Oblivion got their due props (only two truly next-gen games I've seen), and I'm very excited about the PS3 games which look equal or better.

Given how awesome GRAW and Oblivion are, I see nothing wrong with being excited for the PS3 launch games. It's definately a little difficult to go back to playing PS2 games now that Oblivion is in my 360.

My thoughts exactly. It may be superficial in some ways but the only PS2 games i'll be playing this year are FFXII and Valkyrie Profile 2. The visuals have definately been spoiled due to Xbox360...

you really think graw 360 looks next-gen?

i've spent a few hours with the game, mostly just kicking back brews and watching my co-worker and his roomie play it, and the game screams.....not so "next-gen"

haven't played oblivion, but graw suffers from really poorly modeled environments..some very inconsistent texture work..and framerate drops..not to mention the screen tears

i totally agree with your last paragraph....aside from graw, of course..lol...

it's pretty clear that sony stands to silence so many haters come e3, come their launch.

what is my opinion of the PS3? Are you saying that when my PS3 game comes out that I don't want it to do well? I was very pro-Xbox when I worked for them, but that didn't mean I hate PS2 at the time. Hell, I own more PS2 games then Xbox, and play PS2 more way more then my Xbox. Call me a fanboy for supporting and cheering the things I worked on.
I personally was disappointed in the motorstorm demo, the framerate flickered, the ground texture was pretty low res. I really went into the keynote expecting to be blown away, and Sony didn't deliever. They do have lots of time left, and I would expect the game to improve. I never said the game looked like shit.

Everyone I talked to agreed with me that Motorstorm was the biggest let down, and the R&C demo was easily the most impressive thing they showed.

I'd really love to comment on these pics extensively, but they're simply FAR too dark and the quality is too shitty to be even somewhat accurate.

The Warhawk pictures are especially bleak... really no way to tell WTF is going on there.

RC is what this thread should be about. I keep looking at those pics! 360 is sorely lacking in the good old adventure genre and has like nothing lined up either.
 
This thread gives me a headache. E3 is going to be such a blast on GAF if these blurry ass cellphone pics can cause this much of a debate.
 
This is ultimately the effect of showing off CG at E3 (in whichever games were pre-rendered). I think it was DCharlie that said it or someone else but (i'm putting it in my own words now) the biggest problem with showing CG is that its NOT unnatainable but the fact that it creates an illusion that the games are farther along than they really are.

In this case, your comparing CG to a game thats still being actively built. Until you see the game a month or the actual day of release, your going to be letdown.

Note: I'm was surprised to hear that these builds are from December. E3 should be interesting. That would be about 5 months of more development time on everything shown.

This place is going to melt down one way or another when people finally see what real PS3 games look like regardless of what they look like. :lol

i agree with you.

i think, considering they have several months to improve upon this, it's a very nice showing by these developers.

gdc isn't for gamers..

it's for developers, an attempt at showing interesting procedures they've perfected in their design of games.

i think they succeeded.

e3 should knock our socks off.
 
Oblivion and GWAR both have fantastic lighting during intense daylight. Unfortuately both games look far worse when things get darker (significant portions of both games). Most of the Oblivion character models are pretty bad too(compared to the rest of the game at full glory), unless you get the exact perfect lighting conditions for a particular character (exceptions being Khajiit and Argonians).

R&C and Warhawk don't look like they belong on the same gaming console. It is worrisome. If that R&C shot is CG then... but even Sony couldn't be that reckless. Still, I'm going to be extremely skeptical of any game footage until I see videos of people with Dual Shock 3s in their hands.

I think its kind of a tough spot for developers, especially those trying to establish a brand new IP during a transition period. A game in early production with nice tech and concepts behind it that the team is confident in, but may not be quite ready for primetime on early devkits. You can risk being buried by other hyped up games by either revealing a rough looking alpha build or dont show anything at all until its good and ready. Or plan B, roll out a target render, set the bar high for some buzz and risk the final product receiving some backlash for not meeting expectations during the long course of development.

Heavenly Sword may be a good example to watch for. Ninja Theory's seemingly ambitious title they had in the works on PC before getting picked up by SCEE. Last year it was in a pretty unoptimized and early state of development, transitioning to brand new hardware and running at a very low framerate at the time. Thanks to some candid commentary we know for their E3 trailer they chose to post-process their current (slow running) game engine and assets, adding new fx like motion blur and even had the main character's closeup rendered offline because it wasn't ready yet. And all made to look a stunning 60fps @ 1080p. Technically what we saw is a polished, cinematic look of a game that wasnt very polished or cinematic yet at all. Does the fact that its based on the real game's assets and engine make this "psuedo-CG" any less subversive?

Im kinda torn there. I'd rather see a game when its good and ready to be seen, and this kind of "trickery" should be old hat by now. But buzz and hype is what drives this business. In the end all I care about is how the final product stacks up. If a game falls way short of a trailer and/or comments the developer has made that got me excited, bummer. But if it brings a quality experience to the table once the game is actually played who really gives a shit besides the corporate sycophants keeping score.

Now if a game falls way short and it sucks...well then you're in trouble in my book. :)

I agree with everything you've said. Its going to be interesting to see how the final builds of eachgame look. The builds of each game we're seeing now are in pretty good states though (in my opinion of course).

On the same subject, another effect of the CG and the Media Blackout from Sony is the turning of GDC into a Mini-E3. This when its ultimate purpose is not to wow and showcase ones games to the actual public but to show new technology and aspects of games to other developers. No matter, its clear that if GDC can garner this much attention...then E3 is going to be explosive.
 
I think it's just clear that some people won't ever change. Even if developers come out and say directly that the 360 and PS3 will be just about evenly matched graphically, it won't matter when you're wearing fanboy glasses. :lol

These pics are way too blurry to judge one way or another IMO. And even if they were, I wouldn't bother wasting my time discussing them or making any kind of comparison to current 360 offerings as they are still works in progress. Only when there's playable versions of these games will it be time to draw some comparisons.

I'm sure there will be lots of people eating crow this E3.
