Absolutely terrible.
When they go through with this, I'll probably delete my Windows 8.1 partition and install ChromeOS or Ubuntu instead.

I :lol at people who think the desktop is going away and who think that the appstore is an attempt to get rid of the desktop.
I'd like to :lol at the people but I just can't get over the sheer stupidy.
And I will continue to use W7.

I refuse to believe that people still don't recognize MS's powerplay to establish an Apple like control over the PC platform. There's a reason many PC users stuck with Windows even during the times when Apple's OS's were clearly better, beyond the shortage of games. The only reason the desktop still persists in Win 8 is how shit the adoption of Metro apps has been. It's already been relegated to being just another app. Getting rid of it is simply a switch away. And if you think that MS won't throw that switch when they're able to you're deluding yourselves.
It's Win 7 for me until MS stops supporting it. After that, Linux. And if Valve fails and there are still not games on Linux, I guess I'll stop gaming. I refuse to reward MS for trying to kill the PC.
Why are people seeing this as a bad thing. Holy crap.
You forget that this is a company that was willing to alienate at least a third of their userbase to implement Always Online DRM, right? Nothing is too insane/stupid for MS at this point.
I don't think you're very familiar with Chrome OS.
AKA Microsoft is going to dump RT
the article uses terms like "cross os" and "three oses". Where are you getting this "same OS" from?ITT I learned that two devices need to run the exact same OS in order to run the same code.
Come on people, the only reason MS is unifying the OS is to lock windows like it does the xbox. There is no other reason to do this. App store unification can be done easily without unifying the OSes.

Sure, but unifying the OS is what makes it easier for developers, and consumers when there is more uniformity in the interface. Everything works the same; ease of use and efficiency go up.ITT I learned that two devices need to run the exact same OS in order to run the same code.

And it is obvious the reason they are doing this is because they are suck of being dinged in reviews for a lackluster app store, and to give businesses a larger install base to develops on.
Desktop apps are as open as ever.

From the thread title probably. Need more info. Although I don't understand why unifying the appstore would require an entirely new OS to make this happen. Virtualizing phone apps should be a windows 8 update and not a new OS, unless they are planning on putting all kinds of phone style data mining hooks deep into the new OS.
Fun fact: The XBOX division is a separate thing from the Windows division. The Windows division has business sense.
Windows is not going to be locked down like the FUD slingers say. There is exactly zero evidence of that.

It's pretty fascinating how differently people are taking Microsoft's vision of the future of OS on multiple devices from when Apple postulated the same thing years ago. MS just got there in a fraction of the time.

I mean really, if you think this is all about being good for the consumer, then I have a bridge to sell you. I pretty much guarantee that there is some asshole somewhere at MS that furiously faps 24/7 over the idea of a locked down general purpose PC OS.
You will be happy to know that is exactly what the op says.
I read "the next major update to the Windows family" as meaning a new OS, not a service pack to Windows 8.
Just because someone had a vision of the way things should be (in order to maximize corporate profits) does not mean that I cannot bitch that it is yet more stupid ass MBA concocted shenanigans.

shhhhhhThe new Windows Runtime is already locked down. No, they're never going to lock down the old APIs, but the status quo is not acceptable.
Appstore purchases, which were previously separated, will be unified. Suggesting: Purchase Angry Birds on Phone --> no need to purchase on Tablet.
There is also the App Platform. This consists of OS functions and hooks that allow access to, say, networking or graphics libraries. Or maybe controls like the Windows Phone Pivot control. These are the 'tool sets' that allow developers to target the platform. Unifying all three tool-sets sounds like a good idea, right?
But this isn't even talking about the app platform. It's talking about features, like Internet Explorer, or Skype, maybe Xbox Music / Video, or Calendar, or something. Unifying the experience around that would seem like a good thing, right?
I think you have a basic misunderstanding as to what the article is talking about. It isn't talking about a new OS. Why would you virtualize phone apps if you could make them native and targeted towards the form-factor?
Why would you not virtualize phone apps? What kind of idea is changing your OS to be more phone like in order to run shitty phone apps? My PC is not a cell phone and I don't want it to behave like one.

Fuck off with this, Microsoft. Proving time and time again that you're simply unable to learn.
It's about time they do this. They get docked for their ecosystem every time in reviews. They should've merged app stores a long time ago.
You didn't read the quoted text beyond the title? Would have saved you anxiety and prevented misunderstanding.
