Ni-Oh gameplay (PS4) - It's Dark Souls x Onimusha x Ninja Gaiden

The orbs and setting give off a bit of Ninja Gaiden vibe but the gameplay seems more akin to Souls than NG.

Some nice potential to build on. Hope they take out those damage numbers flying on screen, though.

I'm very much looking forward to this game. More than any other game coming to the Quad.

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?

Well, I finally watched all of it. Truly looks like shit but I'll probably buy it anyway solely for the ract that I'm action adventure starved.

This was the first time I've ever heard of the title, but the gameplay and atmosphere had me hooked immediately. Can't wait to play it. In the meantime, though, I decided to translate some of the information given in the video in the OP. Some of it is explained in the VG247 article, but not everything. I'm far from an expert in Japanese (but I'll be going there for a year to study in a couple of weeks!), so please bear with me if there are some slight inaccuracies. I also couldn't make out the name of some mechanics.

  • On the bottom right are four icons that determines fighting stance.
  • Your Offensive and defensive capabilities are dependant on stance and can be changed on the fly.
  • There are bloddy katanas on the ground where other people have died.
  • Apparently you can active them and fight against them for good loot.
  • (I can't make out what word they used to describe them so I'm not sure if you fight them in PvP or if you fight AI units that look like the players.)
  • You can change armor and weapon in real time, so make sure you're in a safe area when you do.
  • There are also spears in the game that are good against groups of enemies.
  • There are guardian spirits that William can see and infuse into his weapon for a limited time like the flame wolf and the blue owl.
  • Guardian spirits appear after you die. (I guess as a helping hand?)
  • You will have to decide when to use it apparently, so there might be a limit.
  • There are shrines where you level up with the experience you've saved up, and where you can change spirit.
  • In some locations you might come across some strange flimmering (can't make out what they call it), which when you approach will spawn a youkai that drops good loot.
  • The boss shown is called an onryou (revengeful demon), a powerful oni.
  • You heal in realtime so it's important to look for an opening to do so.
  • When he heals he infuses his weapon with what looks like a blue owl spirit, different from the fire wolf from earlier.

Sweet, thanks for this but... William? Really?

Are you going to be irrationally pissy about this game because it takes some good ideas from your precious Souls series?

I see lots of influences in this game including onimusha, souls and ninja gaiden. But I don't agree with the "souls clone" comments at all. Just because it has slower methodical combat doesn't make it a souls clone, cmon.

Wow thanks for all that. Some really interesting details here.

Thanks Pricken for taking the time to translate and write out those details!

This game looks to be a great hybrid of Souls and Onimusha, along with it having the visual flare that Ninja Theory is known for in their games. Imo...William is a pretty generic name for one who hunts demons and ghost. Hopefully they'll change it to something more fitting..lol.

60 FPS would be ideal, especially with how fast the enemies hit. Need that fluidity in frames to react accordingly.. Lol

I am sensing some anger in this post. I have a very polarized opinion about the Souls games, so I think my answer to your questions is... no :).Here's my Lords of the Fallen summary to give you some perspective how I see games that are inspired by the Souls games! I encourage developers to make Souls-inspired games because more good games in my world is just a positive thing.

I missed the NicoNico stream, my post in the other thread reads like nonsense after watching this video. At least I got the 4 stances right.

Looks great! Really cool art direction and I can see the many influences of this game. Very promising. We need more games like these.

EDIT:

Your sensors are miscalibrated. But I couldn't help but notice you said it looked like shit without further explanation. No one else is saying that, and you're Yoshichan, so I put two and two together and took a stab at an explanation for your opinion.

I'm not calling it GOTY or anything, but it looks to be at least competent based on what little we can see for ourselves.

For some reason this game just went on the top of my list of games I must own. I loved NInja Gaiden for XBox, onimusha, and even Blood will tell.

Hopefully the game pan's out, what I see so far has be excited.

that looks really good, maybe a bit more action-y compared to souls (maybe not bloodborne though)
get a feeling it's loot based, there's blue, gold, purple colored loot etc
the ink fire effect on the demonic enemies looks really cool as well

Eh, he's fuckable in that DILF kind of way.

Well, we are, aren't we? I said "blonde boy".

Oh... I'm just confused now because I said "can we leave Geralt out of this?" and you said "hell NO" but you want to talk about the blonde boy (who isn't Geralt) so now I don't really know what we are talking about...

The highlight of Sony's conference for sure.

Good to know they're making it 60FPS too. It looks really good.

I wonder if there will be faster weapons than the katana.

Also, thanks for the translations.

It still looks nothing like Onimusha.

I'd relate this more to Otogi to Dark Souls, even.

have you seen the gameplay video? not the trailer. It's basically onimusha with a third person camera and the soul absorption is straight up onimusha.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuY6R-iF3XU

Which to me is a good thing. I have been waiting for an onimusha game for ages. Even a HD collection would have made me happy.
Hope it makes it to xbox one

So far the best game and biggest surprise of the TGS. Looks like a game that I would really enjoy (I love Onimusha, Souls and similar titles^^). Looking forward to more (and less pixelated^^) gameplay footage.

The game is specifically designed for trial and error. Developers expect players to retry segments multiple times.
William can swap between different weapons in real-time. He starts with the katana. Other weapons include a spear. Every weapon has their own traits to differentiate from the other.
A stamina meter limits the number of actions that can be preformed at a time.
Armor can be found and equipped. It customizes William's appearance.
Spiritual energy drops from fallen foes. These spirits can fortify William. (Hi, Dark Souls)
Shrines are scattered across the map. Players can access these points to level up William. (Just like Dark Souls, too)
If players are connected online, they can revive other fallen players when they see a red glowing sword in the ground. This is where other players have died. (To battle against, they drop good loot)

This looks pretty badass. Probably gonna pick this up.

Judging from the icons on the right, it looks like you switch between Jo-dan, Chu-dan, Gei-dan and Iaido stances.

EDIT: Those sheathing animations are so good.

Looks pretty cool - though I don't like having execution animations interrupt combat.

but ffs, I get tired of how quickly "journalists" like to whip out a Dark Souls comparison - "it's hardcore" is such a generic and uninformative statement. I think Dark Souls comparisons should really be about things such as the atmosphere and story-telling of the game, and we haven't seen nearly enough of NiOh to make any evaluation of it.
