Nintendo E3 2017 Spotlight Thread: Not my problem. [Over]

What game are you most excited for?

Mario Odyssey seems really inspired, but I'm hoping you aren't required to mess around too much to get to the interesting platforming bits.

What a worthless E3 this was. I at least wanted Nintendo to make me excited for the future of the Switch, turns out 25 minutes really isn't a whole lot of time for announcements.

And I certainly don't want to hear "Sony always hypes stuff that is far off!" from anybody who is excited for Prime 4 and Pokemon Switch. Sony at least provides trailers instead of "we're totally working on stuff, promise!" How fucking sad is this.

It definitely reeked of assurance.

But honestly. This is a pretry damn strong launch year for a new system, especially a new Nintendo system.

Zelda
Mario
Mario Strategy Game
Mario Kart
Splatoon 2
New IP: ARMS
Rocket League
FIFA 18
Fire Emblem Musou
Pokken

That's... pretty strong.

Where the fuck is the Switch port of Smash Bros 4, though?

I WAS PROMISED A PORT OF SMASH BROS ON SWITCH.

Pikmin and Animal Crossing also MIA.

You got Metroid Prime 4 for Switch announcement.
You got Pokémon Core RPG developed by Game Freak for Switch announcement.
You got a few surprises as Kirby and Yoshi for 2018.
You got Xenoblace Chronicles 2 for 2017 and not 2018 as rumored.
You got an amazing Mario Odyssey trailer.

And still GAF wanted even more.

Never change, GAF.

Suprised by GAF and the lukewarm reception of Nintendo's E3 Direct. I think it was amazing,it had a fucking Metroid Prime 4 announcement in it! And a Pokemon too! And Rocket League! Plus Mario and Xenoblade 2 are coming very soon. Come on GAF, this was a dream Direct

Yeah, literally all this needed was Smash and this would have been legendary for me. Odyssey alone looks incredible and MP4 and Pokemon Switch are MASSIVE deals even if they are just teasers. They also didn't dwell too much on Splatoon, Pokken, or ARMS, or only show 2017 stuff as some worried.

I kinda feel the art style of Mario is a little bit off. The world seems a bit empty and plain, and lacks a bit punch and color. Reminds me a little of Sunshine.

Agreed. Sunshine vibes. The style has some awkward juxtaposition. It's the total opposite of 3D World where everything fit together seemlessly. I guess that's part of the idea behind the travel theme - it's supposed to be stylistically all over the place. Still feels kind of odd.

Who would have thought Breath of the Wild would lose its GOTY, eh? My mind is absolutely blown by Super Mario Odyssey, I need it.

I'm being blown away by Nintendo this year, if Odyssey is as fun as my mind imagines it we'll be getting two unforgettable experiences in one year. Damn.

I don't blame them, they probs added the Pokemon bit because people were dumb enough to think the main games were going to continue on the 3DS for eternity.
Same with Metroid. Morons would have thrown another tantrum this year screaming about how Metroid is dead if they didn't announce it. It's unfortunate Ninty needs to announce things this early to calm people down but it's nice to have those games confirmed.

Pretty much what I expected from Nintendo. Not too concerned that there wasn't a massive amount of info everything they showed, as I'm sure there'll be directs later in the year to really flesh things out.

Just knowing what they've got in the pipeline is enough to satisfy me. I can wait for the details.

GAF has premium standards for Nintendo.

That was about what I expected, but of course Metroid prime 4 was an amazing surprise, but still a ways off from release apparently. Retro really been working on this for 3 years?

Hard to get excited about another 2D Kirby and Yoshi platformer, they're all starting to look like the same game to me.

Mario Odyssey looks like it's going to be fantastic as expected, loving the ability to posses objects and enemies, lots of interesting new game mechanics shown here, although New Donk City continues to look hideous.

I think the lesson to be learned here is that companies should just reveal games with just titles. No development resources put towards trailers or showing the game, and then next year, I'd up the game with the reveal of the subtitle.

Given that they just gave names of stuff they were making like pokemon/metroid without showing anything, I really wouldn't expect an animal crossing on the switch.

Not a content-filled event but one that, other than Ubisoft with BG&E2, managed to bring some real excitement. Metroid Prime 4, Pokemon Switch, Rocket League and Kirby were all amazing surprises even if the former two didn't show anything. I think the best descriptor here is "short but sweet."

I'd give this a 7/10 for sure.

Now for the final bingo! Not a single Bingo in any of the three conferences but I don't mind. So damn glad I was able to cross off the Metroid space:

I still can't believe how fucking frontloaded this first year for the Switch is.

Zelda, ARMS, MK8D, Splatoon 2, Fire Emblem Warriors, Mario + Rabbids, and the actual mad men are still sticking to Xenoblade 2 for the Holidays.

This has to be the most exciting first year I've ever experienced for a console.

Fucking major props that they didn't dwell on games like Splatoon 2, ARMS and Pokkén for this spotlight. They were laser focused on this. New Yoshi, Kirby were also incredibly welcome surprise announcements.

In general over the past decade, I have come to the conclusion that Nintendo fans are far and away the easiest audience to appease for these showings. Nintendo has to fuck up hardcore to get a negative response. This was an okay-ish conference, certainly an improvement after the shitshow yesterday.

Was an alright show I guess. It's weird that this is probably the best year this gen regarding great releases yet the entirety of E3 was a snoozefest

Add Rocket League to that.

Anyone thought this was super disappointing? Like Pokemon and Metroid was cool, but it was a logo and an announcement that Pokemon is in development. :/

I thought it was alright. Better than Sony and MS. Didn't expect any earthquakes since they said e3 would focus on 2017, but the Pokemon announcement comes across as trying to calm the people that got worked up over a rumor.

Glad I set my expectations so low for new announcements, because they were handily surpassed. Nintendo did a nice job of managing expectations this year.

Big question is, with Mario arriving earlier than expected, what's their big November title? Are they just withholding a Smash announcement until closer to release?

Xenoblade 2
Kirby Switch
Yoshi Switch
Pokken Tournament DX
Pokemon Switch
Metroid Prime 4
Mario Odyssey
FE Warriors
Mario + Rabbids
Rocket League
Skyrim
Zelda DLC
Mario Odyssey

A very solid and good presentation and easily at the same level as Sonys or MS presentation.

There where some very early announcements for 2018 games, like Pokemon and Metroid Prime 4, but that seems to be common these days. Never forget Sonys last e3 with announcements for games that are many years in the future.

The 2017 line-up for Switch turned out to be simply amazing.

Overall an interesting line-up, but at least two notable absences: SMT HD and Monster Hunter XX, and the Metroid and Pokemon bits were quite literally "there is a game in development". No FE 2018 footage/teaser makes sense if Warriors is coming out soon, but the amiibo proliferation was also somewhat offputting.

Good to see Xenoblade didn't get delayed, and they didn't have any overly long focus on ARMS or Splatoon.

Odyssey looks like it mixes 64 and 3D World

Oddly enough, it does feel like it's blending some elements from the course-clear games (like 3D World) with the sandbox games (like 64).

It definitely feels way more sandbox/collectathon Mario to me though.
Like those short-burst, somewhat simplistic platforming challenges scattered around New Donk City feel like they were ripped straight out of 64 or Sunshine.
Also that one mission in the sand kingdom involves no platforming, you just have to change your clothes to get the macguffin. That action adventure-esque stuff is straight out of the old sandbox collectathon Mario platformers.

But then again...the second mission they did in the sand kingdom felt like it came right out of Galaxy or 3D World; it was basically a big platforming obstacle course.

I'm really interested to get my hands on Odyssey.

I think you're just harsher than most. Nothing about yesterday was a shitshow. At worst, underwhelming, and that's just talking about Sony.

Definitely. Normally I play a console in the launch window and then there's a HUGE lag. With the Switch it's been my primary console ever since it came out. Pretty amazing.

Seriously, I haven't been as interested and bought so many games for a new system since Atari.

I agree it was good not great.

This is a pretty disingenuous because it wasn't like they were just random games. They specifically announced a console Pokémon RPG, something people have wanted for twenty years, and Metroid Prime 4, a return of a beloved series.

So in summary:

- Kirby
- Yoshi
- New Pokemon on SW, what a surprise
- Metroid Prime 4

The last one is very early, with nothing, not even a CGI trailer to show. It was expectedly bare. Honestly this whole E3 feels a bit bare.
