Nintendo reveals Wii MotionPlus -- 1:1 motion control add-on

Neat. It'll be interesting to see how well it works. Now why don't they redesign the Wiimote with this doodad built in?

Sounds coo, it think it will be interesting to see how it works :)

Nintendo Wii's N64 expansion pack?
This is what i also thought about :) I wonder if this Wii expansion sensor (what i shall call it) will be required to be used with some games of if its just an enhancer in some sort of way, like the N64 expansion pak were with some games. Some N64 games required the expansion pak to work while some N64 games had optional support for the expansion pak. I wonder if it will be like this on the Wii too with this new Wii motion sensor :)

now it will be interesting to see if MS brings out the newton or if sony splits the DS3.

sony might be in a better position because they can go back and add similar functionality to the splitaxis if its not already there

wtf?!

They must already have games developed for this new accessory to release this information now. Damn, Nintendo don't rest on their laurels.

Yeah, Nintendo needs to A- bundle this with every Wii sold and B- bring out Wii Sports 2.

Edit- I hope 3rd parties knew about this before now..

Not to sound like a dick, but this is annoying to me because the controller is supposed to exist to do this very thing already. It's like an admission that the controller sucks at the one job it has beyond a standard controller.

I agree totally.

Brian Crecente recently said on Bonus Round that he was starting to think Nintendo's direction was based on selling more peripherals then anything else.

Looks like he was spot on.

Can a tech-head please explain to those of us who are a bit confused why this is so significant? And why couldn't this (1:1) be pulled off with the standard remote?

This is an interesting concept, but I can't help but wonder why this wasn't part of the Wiimote in the first place. >_>

Wow, they preemptively just attacked Sony and Microsoft's rumored controllers, (presumably) increased the chances of 1:1, and had a huge announcement before their conference actually started.

I can't WAIT to see what games they show off at the conference that are going to take advantage of this.

Hopefully this isn't like the Nintendo 64 upgrades.

I think we all, to varying degrees, have wanted 1:1 control potential for the Wii. This is pretty huge. Drop it in a Wiiware 2 that shows off the technology and you'll have very high userbase penetration.

I expect a lot of new demos from nintendo using this.

I can see the Microsoft keynote people hitting their heads of a wall and scrambling to change their "We beat the Wii Remote" wording of their huge speech. They have to be a bit pissed considering it is only 2 hours to go!!

I'm guessing the MS controller will have this capability built-in, it always seemed fairly obvious to me that 1:1 was the goal for motion controls.

c-c-c-c-c-combo breaker!
to MS

This will surelly come with a game (like the Whell, the gun, Wii board... I think Nintendo is getting a little crazy on the add-ons, even though they warned since the Wiimote was revealed)

I think you already know the answer to that question

mo money

I wonder if this was uploaded early due to a miscommunication/mistake. If so, did the Nintendo conference just lose all it's punch?

If it was on purpose, does it mean something MORE awesome is coming?

GAF!!! WHAT'S GOING ON HERE !?!?!?!?

Thats pretty cool. Cant wait to see what games will make use of this. Now I'm starting to think that a FPA Zelda game would be a good idea.

Just as I thought. If they bundle this with a Wii Sports 2 or a Starfox/Pilot Wings title that includes the functionality of the accessory it pretty much is a HUGE slap in the face for MS who are guaranteed to be like a raging bull now.

Hmm, even imaginary (?) competition breeds improvement...or maybe not so imaginary if Nintendo has taken it that seriously!

They'll need a very tangible demonstration of how this improves above and beyond the standard 'mote too, though. And the same issues of peripheralisation apply to this as would to any competitor offering.

Microsoft's conference just got that bit more interesting.

No...he said that Wii owners bought it for the peripherals and not the games.

I'm afraid Nunchuk less games means more non-game applications.

But it could be interesting depending on what demos they show for it.
There's a little port on the end of the Wiimotion Plus covered by a little hatch, you can most likely plug the nunchuck in through there.

Edit: Dammit beaten by mere seconds!

no no no....with their current roll you could do

M-M-M-MONSTER COMBOOOO!

This is seriously quite amazing. I'm actually really, really pumped for what's to come of this. With Wii's momentum this could be absolutely gigantic. Bundled with the next Zelda it could become the standard afterwards.

Prolly a pre-emptive response to whatever MS has cooking. Why is everyone thinking this will succeed as an add-on peripheral when everyone yells how MS's idea won't work cause it's not the main controller?

The basic Wii experience gets a lot added to it (in the eyes of consumers) when more peripherals are released.

Look at how popular the Wii Zapper, Wii Wheel, Wii Fit, etc. are for the system.

This will be bundled with a killer app, I believe. If it's Wii Sports 2, Zelda Wii, the Star Wars lightsaber game, Red Steel 2, or whatever, expect it to be huge and catch on fast.

I'm only speculating, but as I said before it's probably simply a second accelerometer. Using 2 some distance from each other allows exact mapping of rotations and twists.

I think that's at least part of their motivation. The profit margins on these peripherals must be phenomenal.

So, now games will have like ten different control schemes?

With the motionplus
Without motionplus
With balance board

What else? :)

Gamecube controller
Classic controller
Wiimote
Wiimote+nunchuck

Almost 10 ;)

Wow, completely unexpected.

This should have been in the controller in the first place, but I'm sure Nintendo will be smart enough to package it with a high-profile game (though it probably won't be bundled with the system like it should). If it's only sold separately, very few developers will bother supporting it.

This does have a pass-through port for the nunchuk, though?

It seems everyone is taking an MS Wiimore rip-off for granted. I thought they had shot down that rumor after the Banjo video with Ken Lobb?
