Nintendo reveals Wii MotionPlus -- 1:1 motion control add-on

Nintendo is going to pack this in with Wii Sports 2 or an equivalent must-have game, charge $50 for the package, and sell a goddamn fuckton gazillion.

Also, :lol :lol :lol at the announcement timing. Already e3 is hilarious this year.

I guess I never realized 1:1 was just not possible with the Wiimote until now. I always assumed it was just a software limitation not hardware.

1:1 controls could certainly be interesting. This is good news for us Wii owners.

I agree totally.

Brian Crecente recently said on Bonus Round that he was starting to think Nintendo's direction was based on selling more peripherals then anything else.

Looks like he was spot on.
Not to say this isn't a dick move by Nintendo, but it sucks for a company to always have to put out new hardware. I'm sure they'd much rather sell software.

Jesus christ, Nintendo brings the thunder before E3 even started. I'm predicting alot of awesome software to go with this device.

This is an interesting concept, but I can't help but wonder why this wasn't part of the Wiimote in the first place. >_>

Because motion controls had never been successfully done is a good guess

Some of the reactions are great, Nintendo is now getting hit on trying to upgrade their own hardware....there is no win for them on gaf I think :lol

This has to come with a game (or with a new Wii Play or something), I cannot see them just releasing the adapter by itself

Wow, 5 pages in 15 minutes. As expected from E3 GAF.

Hopefully they show off some new games that use this.

I really look forward to seeing the games and consepts that use this, hoepfully we will see some cool new stuff at the press conf.

Also... is the Sixaxis or DualShock3 capable of 1:1? Or is it apparently "gimped" like the standard Wii remote?

Nicely timed just before MS's conference. :lol

This is cool tho, devs still have to implement it well for it to work but Nintendo will nail it no doubt. 1:1 controls is what we all want from the Wii rather than just having it replace a button press. Good stuff.

I think we all, to varying degrees, have wanted 1:1 control potential for the Wii. This is pretty huge. Drop it in a Wiiware 2 that shows off the technology and you'll have very high userbase penetration.

Definitely. I just wish it wasn't coming in the form of a peripheral; I think a lot of us were initially sold on the system with the notion that the controller was already capable of this.

Either way, I guess I'm glad to see they are at least moving forward with the motion controls instead of letting them stagnate due to insufficient tech to support it. Hopefully they at least make this thing available in game pack-ins (like Force Unleashed).

Hmm which is better...announce this before the possible waggle MS controller or after?

I would've done after. Would'v been much more dramitic imo...or release a pr during the MS conference.

The more I think about the possibilities of us coming closer to a true 1:1 experience, the more excited I get.

I can't wait to see their demonstration tomorrow.

This is fantastic news. Wasn't expecting this until next generation.

With this Nintendo fixes the only real problem with the Wii remote. If this attachment contains say, a 3-axis gyro, that should be enough to get very reasonable position estimates out of the controller. A gyro in combination with an accelerometer would allow for separation of lateral and rotational movement, so that's your 1:1 estimate right there.

Hopefully developers will be all over this, and poor gesture recognition will be a thing of the past. Bring on the better games! :)

How does this even work? If its just another accelerometer 1:1 still isn't possible. For 1:1 to occur the controller has to read its position in 3D, not just measure jerking the wand around.

.... does this mean I have to buy 4 of these things now?

Shit, forget Wii Sports 2.

This has to come bundled with every Nintendo title for a year :lol
Including Mario Party, Redsteel 2, Wii Sports 2, etc, etc.

Stupid having to pay for something that should have been included in the first place; but I'm all for technologically updating, its just unfair that it could split the marketplace and we have to pay for it.

I can see the Microsoft keynote people hitting their heads of a wall and scrambling to change their "We beat the Wii Remote" wording of their huge speech. They have to be a bit pissed considering it is only 2 hours to go!!

that's why Nintendo revealed it now, before the MS conference.

I appreciate that Nintendo is willing to admit that its first go at motion controls wasn't perfect and make an attempt to improve the experience for gamers. That's commendable.
So is their timing.

I wonder if all new Wii Remotes will have this included within a single controller? Can't wait to see what they do with it.

Yea, I think Evilore is on the right track. I'm betting on this being included with the whole Wii Play package. Wii Play 2 I guess now :D.

Jesus people, Nintendo took a hell of a gamble releasing wii-mote as the standard controller. And you were bitching because they didn't add 20$-30$ to the cost of the controller right out of the box?

Now that they have showed the tech, they're ready to advance it to the next level. Let's wait until they demo the game to this wimote 2.0.

They MUST know something we don't know about what the competition is up to.

I'm kind of surprised they would respond at all though! Unless microsoft or sony aggressively pushed a new controller as the new standard for their systems, the Wii has nothing to worry about (and even then might not given the price differences and the image Wii has cultivated very successfully).

I'm thinking Wii Sports 2 or something similiar will be the bundle, but I'd also expect at least 1 core 1st party game to demonstrate it tomorrow. Zelda? Retro's game? Something..
