Nintendo Sets Release Dates for Q1 for 3DS/Wii U

So basically for WiiU:

Q1:

Rayman
Monster Hunter
LEGO City Undercover
Aliens

Q2:

Pikmin
Wonderful 101
WiiFit U
Game & Wario

That first-year lineup is no better than the Wii U's. Maybe we fancy different genres, but no game on that list interest me.

I guess we'll see whether or not that's true later this year, Microsoft capitalized on the 360's first year very well. I also didn't list 3rd party titles that were on other consoles and the 360.

360's launch/first year:

Elder Scrolls Oblivion
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter
Dead Rising
Saints Row
Chromehounds
Rainbow Six Vegas
Gears of War
Kameo
Condemned
Fight Night Round 3
Viva Pinata
Amped 3

Most of these are 1st party games or were exclusive at the time.

Most of the notable games in the first year, saying these games were crappy at the time in 2006 seems very disingenuous. These experiences were fresh and new for console owners, I don't know if the same will be said about Wii-U's first year.

Seems like this is pretty disingenuous and predicated on the premise that nothing announced or released is noteworthy. We already know that Wii U will have the following in its first year:

NSMBU
ZombiU
Pikmin 3
W101
Rayman Legends
Bayonetta 2
MHTriU
Lego City

And we have absolutely no clue what's coming later in the year. THAT is what's causing all these asinine "I feel bad for Wii U owners" posts. If those are the only noteworthy exclusives we're getting in its first year, then yes, it's sparse in comparison to the 360's first year, but we know that's not going to be the case. There's also going to be at least a handful of multiplats worth looking into as well.

Now, that lineup is a very different set of games than what the 360 got. But just because it's not your particular cup of tea doesn't suddenly make it pathetic like many are pretending.

I do agree though that in comparison to the current competition, Wii U is going to have a comparatively sparse year.

This is just... wow. I imagine that they're aren't many Wii U only owners out there but still, this is pretty poor for an after launch period. There's usually a bunch of games that can't make the launch window that would be coming out now, I guess Rayman qualifies as one of those, but what the hell is going on otherwise?

How could Nintendo have hoped to meet their shipment targets with so few new games to spark sales in Q1?

I only buy exclusives when I buy console games too. Every multiplatform title I always purchase on PC (and well, those AAA games will be nice and cheap by the Steam Summer Sale). It's the main reason why i'm pretty pumped about this lineup.

While I abandoned PC gaming many years ago, if Steam can get a well priced plug and play box I'll probably start doing what you do. Keep Wii U for exclusives and go PC for everything else.

That first-year lineup is no better than the Wii U's. Maybe we fancy different genres, but no game on that list interest me.

Um, that's pretty suspect. There's nothing currently released that's been as critically acclaimed as Oblivion, Gears of War or Viva Pinata, and whether we see anything on the level of those games is also in question. That's fine if you don't like anything out of that lineup (I didn't care much for it, either), but it's apples and oranges.

I have no doubt that Wii U's first year lineup will blow 360's out of the water.

It's just the fact that they hold so much information from us (we STILL don't have a date for Pikmin 3) that is the most frustrating fucking thing.

Also, launch day to Pikmin 3 launch has been/will be grueling.

Looks like I'm going to be busy for a while after Feb 4th. :) I'll take these.

3DS
Fire Emblem
Monster Hunter 3
Luigi's Mansion 2

Wii U
Monster Hunter 3

...but gears of war came out a year after launch and oblivion was in March

Viva Pinata is critically acclaimed and NSMBU can't compare?

Viva Pinata was a unique game that scored high across the board, I enjoyed it a lot.

NSMBU is more of the same 2D Mario that a lot of people feel burnt out on. Most people won't be able to tell it's any different from their Wii game at first glance. It's definitely not a system seller, but people will buy it together with other games.

Is this new? Not sure if I like it...

Lol WTF Nintendo. So much for the 'Bu bu but its too early!' excuse makers for Wii U's horrible launch.

Nintendo rarely delays games because they're not done, but to fill release date gaps. Bad omen for Wii U in 2013. Watch Pikmin and/or W101 get pushed to July or August. Nintendo is a plodding developmental company now. Disasterous.

Whoa. Slow down with the facts. You're gonna kill the vibe.

If Nintendo gets it's act together at E3 and announces that Bayonetta 2 and a couple of their marquis franchise games will be ready for Christmas, and that Smash Bros will be ready for release mid 2014, a lot of people will forget their grievances overnight.

I don't know, people might have decided on a different next gen system by then. If they pick up their output though, I might consider buying it as a second console further down the line.

Imagine if the WiiU had been on target and actually released in like Spring 2012. Can you even imagine the drought?

I do believe some third party games were shitcanned (Crysis 2) because by the time LATE 2012 rolled around, they knew they'd be too late, so maybe that woulda been a thing. Who knows.

Speaking about this objectively, software sales are the only to determine what will have had the better first year, so will see in the end who wins that game.

Will knowing that make you feel any better about your PS4 not having any real good games for the 1st year?

Haha calm down buddy, I probaby won't own any of these systems at launch. You did ignore my comment about both Durango and Orbis having a much better 3rd party backing than the Wii U .

I don't know, people might have decided on a different next gen system by then. If they pick up their output though, I might consider buying it as a second console further down the line.

It really depends on what we hear from Sony and Microsoft at E3, and also the economy. If Nintendo is able to shave a bit off the price of the Wii U and have a better library of games ready for the Holidays, I think they can be pretty competitive. If Microsoft and Sony land at $400+ and rely on big budget franchises that are still available for the 360 and PS3, it could be a challenging holiday for them.

I would love to know how many Wii U owners only own a Wii U as there sole gaming option.

I would hazard a guess that its a very low number. Probably just casuals if any, who are not that bothered when stuff comes out.

The lack of appealing software doesn't help to sell the system though granted.

As an owner of multiple consoles/handhelds I'm spoilt for choice.

Hardcore gamers who only own a Wii U must be miffed. Does someone who only owns a Wii U get classed as a hard core gamer? Conundrum.

I would like to see more support but its early days really.

I'm really annoyed with Nintendo's WiiU software strategy, or lack thereof. I can completely understand some delays here and there, or untimely first party software, but how are they not securing more third party content? Stuff like The Walking Dead for download would help fill in some of the calendar... And if they see there's still large gaps between software, then make Virtual Console on WiiU a high priorty. Get that endless supply of legacy content on the store.

Doesn't really look like they're trying to make Q1 appealing at all.

Nintendo trying to be different while its 2 main competitors are on par with each other is really burying them. It forces third party devs to half ass games for the Wii U or just outright not develop for the Wii U.

I saw the Monster Hunter date, but nothing else floating about

Wii U
Capcom
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate March 19

Nintendo 3DS
Konami Digital Entertainment, Inc.
Castlevania: Lords of Shadow – Mirror of Fate March 5

Nintendo
Luigi’s Mansion™: Dark Moon March 24

holy wow, pretty baren.

I'm a maybe on Luigi.

The Wii U is not the Wii or the Gamecube. It's the N64.

This is the point I was trying to make above. Nintendo really needs to get momentum started NOW. Looking at the sales, that's not happening. A lot of the upcoming games are great for me, as someone who already owns Wii U, I don't see much that makes people think they need to go pick up a Wii U (especially with PS360 releases).

Edit:

The thing is, they shouldn't be waiting for the Holidays. They should be trying to build momentum now, before all the MS/Sony PR-Hype Machine starts, IMO.

lineup looking bleak on the Wii U, but I still think I'm going to love Monster Hunter and LEGO City Undercover. I don't regret buying mine. Wish it had more to offer but I'm patient. I prefer PC anyway :)

I said the exact same thing when the 360 released. I ended up picking one up the following Christmas when the library had expanded enough for me to want to pick up a few games. I'm kind of suprised that so many people expect the Durango and Orbis launches to be unstoppable juggernauts. Given the spec rumors, we know they will likely be more expensive than the Wii U next Christmas, and we have absolutely no clue what the software lineups will be yet.

A buch of people here are acting as if the WiiU is the only console they own - i see a couple of nice titles on this list, more than enough considering what will be released on PC,Ps360 and Vita the next months. Sucks for WiiU onlys but its not as bad as the amount of tears in this thread would let you believe.

I don't know if current owners of a 3DS are excited but as someone who has waited all this time to find the right time to buy stuff, I can say I am quite excited to buy a brand new 3DS together with

.- Etrian Oddysey IV
.- Castelvania: Mirror of Fate
.- Luigi's Mansion

I am preparing my wallet right now, March will be awesome.

I don't give a fig for critically acclaimed. For my tastes that list elicits nothing but apathy. Note that I don't like the Wii U lineup either but at least I have MonHun and Wonderful 101 to look forward to.

I'm of two minds on that subject. I can see the benefit of that strategy, as you would think it would help push back against the anticipation that people have for the new consoles. On the other hand, I can see doing what I think Nintendo is doing, and that's hold off on trickling out game announcements, and then blow them off all at once in an orgy at E3. That way, Nintendo has an entire keynote event to announce a bevy of software titles that are playable on the show floor and available for sale in the coming months, and you leave Microsoft and Sony to spend most of their events detailing new hardware, and maybe showing off a few demos and teasers for the new consoles for late in the year.

A bunch of games I want on 3DS... won't be able to get all the ones I want....

Feel really bad for WiiU owners right now. OUCH!
Went through that with the 3DS. Enjoy MiiVerse.

So basically for WiiU:

Q1:

Rayman
Monster Hunter
LEGO City Undercover
Aliens

Pikmin
Wonderful 101

When put this way, it isn't all that bad (considering I won't buy more then 4 games this quarter on ALL systems), but the list is just so.... Barren.

3DS is shaping up nicely.

I think it has more to do with people wanting to justify their purchase.

Usually, when I buy a new console, I tend to neglect my other consoles for a period of time while I enjoy my new console. Everyone wants to try out their new console, and no one likes to feel like their expensive new toy is gathering dust.

So I can understand people's disappointment in a way, even if their time could be spent on other systems.

The Wii U is not the Wii or the Gamecube. It's the N64.

The N64 had few releases, but at least the ones that released were fuck awesome genre changing classics. For Wii U all you get are minigame collections and one of forty Lego games.

You could almost say it's an...apocalyptic scenario.

You could end up with a situation similar to the Dreamcast and PS2 though, where everything the PS4/720 show off blows away anything the Wii U is showing off. It might make people hold off on buying a Wii U.

That'd be a very bad situation for Nintendo to end up in.

Monster Hunter aside - and I'm likely picking up the 3DS one of that anyway, especially with the lack of some basic features in the Wii U version - there's still absolutely no reason for me to pick up a Wii U. It's disappointing, and it's the first console since PS3 where a system-selling game - for me, personally - hasn't been released within launch window. Let's see what Q2 brings.

No Pikmin 3? :( Hope that and Bayonetta 2 comes out in April or May like it's listed (but I doubt it).

Good stuff for 3DS! My Vita's crying in the corner right now...but I still love it!

When put this way, it isn't all that bad (considering I won't buy more then 4 games this quarter on ALL systems), but the list is just so.... Barren.

Yeah your early comment seemed to be pretty harsh. The overall lineup may be barren when compared to the 360/ps3 lineups but when I look at the games I really want to play on the Wii U and compare those to my other devices, I realize it's pretty much the same number. I've made a list in StreetsAhead's thread and the total was 7 games bought or are a sure buy until Q2. (Nintendo Land - Zombi U - NSMBU - Rayman Legends - MH3U - Pikmin 3 - TW101). These are games that fit my taste and not just something I'll spend an hour or two on, think it's pretty fancy and move on. I am pretty sure I won't have time to complete all of these in this window of time.

Now of course more choice is better, and I totally understand that most people would consider it bad if they're not interested in even half the games I am interested in but I thought I'd weigh in with my opinion to balance out the posters calling it "shit". I agree that the console doesn't offer right now enough games that fit in different genres and if you are going to make one and only one gaming console purchase then it's probably not the best choice. But for people like me, it's a pretty great purchase and I'm pretty sure there's a few on this forum.

Many boxarts

haha quote please :p Thanks

Yeah, that is a risk. I don't think Nintendo went into this thinking that they were going to compete in the hardware arms race. Their task at E3 will be showing us ways to use the gamepad that nobody has demonstrated yet, and blowing us away with what they can do with their franchises in HD. I'm actually in agreement with Iwata that I don't think the difference in graphical fidelity between the consoles will be so great that mainstream gamers will be turned off by it, at least not as much as the difference between the original Wii and the HD consoles. Time will tell, though.
