Nixxes wasn’t acquired for PC ports, It was acquired for ‘Spartacus’

Since sony has announced the acquisition of Nixxes who are known primarily for their PC ports in the past it’s likely that wasn’t the true motive for their acquisition but maybe it was the backward compatibility program.

The exact statement issued by sony is:

“I highly respect Nixxes and am excited for this very experienced team to become part of the world-class development community at SIE,” Hulst said in a news release. “They have a passion for improving games and for delivering the best possible experience for gamers. Nixxes will be a strong asset for everyone across PlayStation Studios, helping our teams focus on their most important goal, which is to create unique PlayStation content at the best possible quality.”

No where does that mention anything about PC ports. This is the statement from the head of Nixxes:

“excited to bring our technical and development expertise to an IP powerhouse like PlayStation Studios.”

Again, nothing to do with PC. And since they were acquired in June, the two big PC ports Sony has announced aren’t even being handled by them. Uncharted Legacy of Thieves collection is being brought to PC by Iron Galaxy and done on PS5 by Naughty Dog themselves. The other big port God of War is being done by Jetpack Interactive in collaboration with SMS. Now tell me why if a big company like sony spent that amount of money for a studio to bolster it’s pc ports why their two big pc ports aren’t being touched by them? What are they saving them for?

I think Nixxes is working with sony the way microsofts BC/FPS Boost team works on their hardware to scale older backward compatible games. I think Nixxes are gonna help be bring native emulation of ps2/PSX games to ps5 with similar upscaling tech and trophy support. What better studio to do it other than them?

I think sony will continue outsourcing it’s handful of annual pc ports to external studios for the foreseeable futre

I think you're going to be disappointed.
Sony has an infrastructure to stream both PS3 and PS4 games.
That means they can run the PSone, PS2 and PSP emulators they already have on the same hardware/infrastructure and stream the classics library already available on the store.
I doubt the whole classics thing will be more than this, streaming emulated classics to justify an expensive subscription tier.
Nixxes will do technical support to speed up development of new games and will be a PC porting specialist.

Agree! People are going to get very disappointed if they announce this and it's not even a fraction of what they are hyping it to be.
Lol they haven't announced and they're not hyping absolutely anything.

Nah.

I think people are overestimating what Spartacus is going to be. Sounds like a rebranding exercise more than anything.
They’ve already confirmed they are bringing PSX and more ps2 and ps3 games onto the service. I’m not really hyping anything, thats the information we were given.

They will be like ICE Team but in Europe. Helping with tech and engine optimization.

The ICE Team focuses on creating core graphics technologies for Sony's worldwide first party published titles, including:
  1. low-level game engine components
  2. graphics processing pipelines
  3. supporting tools
  4. graphics profiling
  5. debugging tools.

Information? You mean "Rumor" ? I hope it comes true, but don't overhype yourself. If we've learned anything this generation it's that we don't always get what we want. haha

Why would one instance of this be a mere ‘rumor’ and the other parts be accurate. It’s either bloomberg/jason got it also right or got it all wrong

And for the record I’m not hyped for old games, i really don’t care about this service.

Yeah a rebrand, plus some more legacy games.

Not sure it will require Nixxes support. Let's see what happens.

To me this reads like Nixxes will allow their studios to focus on the PS5 versions of their games while Nixxes handles the PC ports. That way the teams can focus on a singular version of the game for their vision, instead of a scaled version that varies based on specs.

There's nothing saying that Nixxes can't help with BOTH PC ports and Spartacus. Also, Uncharted and GoW PC ports were already in the works long before Nixxes got acquired. In addition, Nixxes contractually would've had to finish their existing projects even after being acquired. I wouldn't expect to see 1st party PlayStation PC ports from Nixxes until later in 2022 at the earliest.

And what would Nixxes have to do with that? They already have PS3 games on PS Now, they already have a working PS2 emulator, and there's no need to buy a PC port house to have them write a PSX emulator since they already have one of their own they used on the Via and PSP.

Your story is bit of a stretch OP. Nixxes core competency is PC porting. Sony had a clearly strategy to expand to PC market. Sure, nixxes can help with BC work I guess but to assume that BC is the main reason for the acquisition needs some proper mental gymnastics.

They are probably finishing up whatever contract work they were doing before they got bought. In fact, they probably did FFVII Remake since they have done so much work for Square.

My guess is Forbidden West will be their first project but even that may already be deep in development already since it was in the Nvidia leak.

OP actually quotes and cites ‘create unique PlayStation content’ and then goes on to claim that they’ll be working on BC of decades old games.

the meaning of the word ‘create’ hasn’t changed in centuries…

not sure why the OP also uses lack of explicit mention of ‘PC games’ as supporting evidence. PlayStation games on PC are still described as ‘PlayStation content’.

I'm not sure to understand where you get this evidence between Nixxes and a BC enhanced...

Yeah, this whole "it's Sony's Game Pass" thing is a media narrative to help fuel console war nonsense and get clicks. Sony doesn't need a game pass, they make a lot more money from PlayStation than MS does from Xbox so until that changes it would be stupid for Sony to copy a less successful formula. Not to mention the fact that Sony can't lose money for years the way MS can on a service.

Look....I don't disagree in you wanting BC, but I don't see that the information here really solely suggest that.

I agree it doesn't state PC ports.....it also doesn't state BC program either lol

In terms of the PC ports you bring up, those are also projects they already had in the works and ready to ship soon. So what they have in store for them might simply be just PC ports based on what they've done in the past, as its not like the ports you named was all PS4 titles that came out by Sony last gen, they have tons that can still be put on PC that this team will likely handle as oppose to Sony just outsourcing it to another team.

What better team to do some complex BC type emulation? The actual damn people that built the architecture in the first place, vs some port team lol

As a massive PS fan that still owns all the classic systems, I want it to happen too, I hope you are even right....simply I don't believe what you are stating means that is really the case as not enough is really suggesting that is what that team was bought for. I'd say more evidence suggest they were really bought to just port to PC, then do some BC thing.

This reads more like "hopefully Nixxes doesn't port too many games to PC, specially PS5 ones"

BTW little trivia: Spartacus was a gay stripclub in the 90's in my country, some federal judges were caught off guard there. I think this new initiative may be more alligned to such ventures, taking into account recent events from Sony higher ups...

Of course they haven't announce anything, that's why I used IF. Also, people are the ones hyping it to be something close to Game Pass, and it probably isn't, so they'll get disappointed (and blaming Sony).

Oh ok, this is why people are distressed. Which is weird cause i never once suggested that playstation was gonna stop porting games, i just suggest that Nixxes won’t be the ones solely doing it.

I feel like people think having them staffed means games are just gonna be rapid fire porting machine. They are still gonna use external studios to port games so i dont get the butthurt

There is absolutely motivation for Sony to spend money to work on offline BC games.

It costs money for Sony to offer PS3 games through streaming in its service. The PS3 used are still in 90nm and it's not efficient. I'd like to believe some things are definitely being done about it in Sony.

That requires what? My understanding is they run these old games on native hardware and then stream them. They already have that working.

I thought the PS3 streaming was running on native hardware?

PS3 emulation is still in its early phase, and won't be great for a while. Maybe PS6 will have it. Maybe.

According to Jim Ryan Nixxes will help them bring their games to PC : "We are also satisfied with our efforts to provide our IP to PCs, although it is still in the early stages, and we look forward to working with Nixxes (*) to help with that." https://www.famitsu.com/news/202107/28228409.html

In the past, in addition to ports, Nixxes also did work as support team for some Guerrilla games. Specifically on the tools & engine side, helping them to be more productive. I assume that in additon to directly port games, they will implement PC related stuff in Sony's engine, so future Sony games will already have them there.

Sony already has a separate team who works on PS Plus and PS Now, so they will handle Spartacus without needing Nixxes.

I thought the PS3 streaming was running on native hardware?
Yes, each PS Now server rack has the native hardware of 8 PS3s modified to work for streaming instead of with a pad and tv. These are the ones who run PS3 games. They also have other ones for PS4 (so PS2 too) games that are basically the same but using PS4 hardware.

the meaning of the word ‘create’ hasn’t changed in centuries…
In this case Nixxes will 'create' PC ports. Plus pretty likely add PC related stuff to Sony's engine to make future ports easier, cheaper and faster to port.

They’ve already confirmed they are bringing PSX and more ps2 and ps3 games onto the service. I’m not really hyping anything, thats the information we were given.
It's a Bloomber rumor/leak, Sony didn't confirm anything. In any case, ports aren't needed for that: they already have PS2 games running in an emulator on PS4 and PS5, and PS3 games are streamed from PS3 hardware (which btw could run PS1 games too, and I assume they'll use it for it).
