No Man's Sky Spoiler Thread

What if the reason why the game hasn't gotten weirder or that there's no space battle going is because it hasn't been influenced by the community and their actions?

One thing that's been worrying me.

One some trailers\videos they showed planets with areas surrounded by huge trees and vegetation. Like forests or at least small forests.

Yet I still haven't seen that on any of the streams.

Any of you saw anything like that?

Edit: In example this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nLtmEjqzg7M

As soon as the player gets out of the cave.

Unless this trailer is a lie then there are planets like you want to see

I have to disagree strongly. This was never going to be some hardcore survival sim or space combat simulator. Sean and the team have been very honest and up front about what is in the game since the beginning.

It doesn't have to be hardcore or be focused around just the combat, but it can still carry a challenge. To my knowledge, nothing Sean said indicated that the game would be on the far easier side of the spectrum (insofar that you have to try to die).

The community can't influence either of those things.

Well, people have been attacked by pirates and have had space battles, I think I saw pirates attacking another ship once too?

Also, this weirder thing gets said a lot but... What does that mean? Not to say that it has or hasn't, but when are we going to be like "oh yeah, that thing is weird!"? I say that all the time as it is, and I'm not sure if I'd even notice if it crossed into a new level of weird.

I saw a stream where the guy's life support ran out and was damaging him a lot faster than normal. I think we're just going to see a ton of variance in that regard.

Who knows, maybe it's a bug and the difficulty will be fixed in the patch. We'll see.

I think it'd be fine if there was more to the survival. It's like you actively have to try to die.

I have no problem with a chilled out exploration game like this, it's definitely the sort of game I'd like to have in my rotation, but it's not what was described in interviews or the early previews.

It's especially weird when the temperature never goes out of the -100/100 range, the planet descriptions are outright contradicted by what's on the planet and the game makes a big deal of how long you have survived for, like it's some sort of achievement to last for 8 Sol's or whatever.

Very odd.

I've very nearly died a few times because I lost track of my environmental/life support stuff and had to scramble to find the right materials to recharge them. I honestly think it's one thing to be watching a stream and another entirely to be wandering around and forget that you need to stay alive. You don't have enough inventory space early on to carry everything you wanna carry. Especially when you're making fuel runs.

Or you wind up on a planet with constant acid rain. That depletes your shit really, really fast. Or you go diving to check out an underwater facility and run out of oxygen because you decided to futz around in some caverns.

...Or you get into a fight with a ton of sentinels because you tried to blast your way into a sealed station. That was a bad time.

I've also been attacked by pirates and a single pirate brought my shields down to 25%. If 2 had intercepted me I'd have dead.

Overall I think it's a lot easier to die than most people think. It sounds like a lot of streamers are just bouncing around planets a lot and going back to your ship refills your life support. When you've wandered 15 minutes out from your ship things get a little harrowing.

I'll have to disagree with you there.

"the kind of sci-fi we want is exploration filled with danger. The universe is adversarial; it's like a scary, difficult place to be and you're quite vulnerable in it"

I'm hoping that we'll see more planets that are so tough that you need to put a lot of effort into your protection to survive comfortably on. Maybe we find s planet with +/-200c temperature.

The community can't influence either of those things.
yeah I think you're right but what if it's one of those secret things where through our uploads and actions we influence the different factions? Idk would be cool.

Don't know I just expected it to be easier to find life on planets or more complex life forms the closer we got to the center. Doesn't really matter though, I'm gonna enjoy the fuck outta the game.

One journalist found a planet with 750°C temperature in a preview play. I haven't seen anything like that.

Consider this. If you played a few runs of Spelunky or Enter The Gungeon, would you assume the game doesn't have other areas or secrets or bosses because you haven't seen them yet?

This is a similar situation. Just because streamers haven't encountered aspects of the game doesnt mean they're not there. Sounds like some are taking those 5-6 playthroughs and extrapolating.

Well local mom & pop shop decided to release the game early I guess. Was told I could pick it up tonight. . Now debating if I should wait for the day one patch or just start it...

But its an indie game so there wont be any backlash. Wait till a Ubisoft game comes out with one texture being different from the one in the trailer tho...

Every NMS thread has had a significant percentage of people shit posting, so there's already plenty of backlash for a game that's not even out yet, and it's only going to get louder after next Tuesday; but that's fine since I'm going to be cruising around the galaxy by then. Most of the backlash seems to come down into two camps: those that want to hate on the popular thing and just spurt out contrarian wankery; and those that have projected their own unrealistic expectations of what the actual game is and are disappointed that it isn't living up to the (self-generated) hype.

The bolded are either untrue and already seen in streams, or not things you can't say when we've seen maybe 100 planets out of 18 quintillion.

Right! That's another thing, given planet and life variation, basing assumptions on what you're going to be seeing and doing on a couple people's streams isn't going to get you very far. These streams are great for helping us get a better handle on the general gameplay loop however-- but again, only the gameplay loop that lines up with how these streamers are playing.

Honestly, I'd just wait at this point knowing that a Day 1 patch is inbound.

This is probably part of the 90/10
10% interesting
90% not as interesting

There's more variables I think that go into the 90/10 than most people here think.

This is genuinely my concern for the people that are taking what streamers are seeing as gospel. I spent over 2 hours on a planet last night because I kept running into settlements, colonies and old bases. I started crafting my own narrative because there were clues in place, but nothing was stated outright. As an example: I found an abandoned settlement that was covered in a thick, red vine-like substance. When I went to interact with the panel inside of the settlement I got a short entry log that made it sound like these settlers dug a little too deep and a little too greedily. It was eerie as fuck.

Then I wandered so far to see if this was still the case. Was this planet home to a sentient, volatile breed of plant? Eventually I was so far from my ship I nearly died on the trek back. From the surface it looked like it was relatively barren but looking around after landing quickly proved that false.

And that's only in playing for 3-4 hours and seeing.... 6 planets. Maybe?

Rewind bro...tell me more about what you found

Wait, wait, wait? Settlements, colonies, and old bases?

Yeah! They're the "primary" things you find planetside. Some of them have sentient races living inside of them and they can give you things like new words for that language or restore your shields/health. You'll often find blueprints and new guns in these settlements.

And sometimes they're totally abandoned and you just find an outpost signal of what once was.

I kept finding these red vines and they were basically consuming each of the settlements I came across. There was nobody alive and the local wildlife seemed to keep their distance. I didn't have the tools to dig downward at the time, but I'm absolutely going to go back once my mining laser is upgraded a bit more.

Just because the surface of a planet looks barren doesn't mean there's absolutely nothing there. Sometimes it will be a boring planet. Sometimes you'll find C'thulu-esque bullshit inside of a cave or devouring abandoned colonies.

Agreed. Why people just want to spend their spare time walking around an empty planet in a fictional universe is beyond my level of understanding
Because it's fun, interesting, adds variety and provides contrast which is necessary to making discoveries feel like they mean something.
Most animals you find in this game add nothing to the gameplay, they're just background decoration and their absence wouldn't change a thing about its core gameplay loop.

So not just the traders/single NPCs we've seen in stations? Multiple NPCs in a place?

That sounds amazing. Alien kudzu

Any screenshots? Not doubting you, but sounds hard to believe

I can see if I took any when I get home. If not I'll hunt some of the outposts down. These did sound rare from what my friend that also got the game early was saying, but it's definitely something. My favorite is when I have to blast my way into an outpost/old settlement because the door is locked and the local sentinels come after your ass.

You usually have to do a little numeric puzzle to get the benefits of those outposts. If you have enough of the words in a language you get some additional lore about what might have happened.

I really do think a big problem with the streams is that the majority of them are just bouncing from planet-to-planet until they come across one that's immediately visually appealing. Your health and life support are refilled upon boarding your ship, so that immediately takes the risk out of exploring. When you wind up 15-20 minutes out from your ship things start to get a bit more harrowing unless you happen upon a landing pad.

Yah what's up with this? Have any streamers ever had a difficult time staying alive on a planet??

Ok, this does sound promising. I guess this game wasn't meant to be another Don't Starve or even Minecraft in regards to struggling to stay alive...

Sean always did say to expect Star Wars-style frontier settlements when asked about populated areas

Hrm, missed that bit. Id love there to be small settlements here and there..and yeah, most streamers tend to spend 10 minutes on any planet before leaving it. Im deffo gonna take time on my first planet..

Pretty sure they changed their view of the universe during those years

Well maybe. But someone said it was their plan 'from the beginning'. Also nothing has been officially said to contradict that description in the interim, so people are still using that to judge the game.

From BT's stream:

Just loaded up $60 on my PSN account.

I've stayed clear of this thread cause I wanted to go in completely unsullied.

I was/am still on the fence, so I decided to venture into this thread to find something last minute that pushes me off the fence, either way.... and this photo right here... it just amazes me.

I think I'll take a chance on Sean and HG.
