No, I think everyone who reads this thread will be aware that any accusation of racism or perception of a insensitive remark about a culture is going to be met by emotions occasionally - that's one of the characteristics of people who are being overly sensitive. He won't be banned.

As I said, I'm willing to put the discussion aside like I said pages ago. There's no need to argue about it, since I use the word sparingly as it is. We can agree to disagree, that's the best we're going to get.

Serious question, would going in and saying the game was a bit too "Japanese" change anything at all with your feelings regarding it?

I wouldn't say that either, but "Jappy" would get a rise out of someone.

Personally, and this is being honest, I'd just say the game was weird and I didn't like it.

Probably not - Japanese culture has different taste than NA culture.

See the popularity of dating sims in JP compared with NA.

Jappy is a deragotary term for said culture though.

It doesn't SOUND like another racist fucking term, ITS THE SAME FUCKING RACIST TERM YOU IGNORANT BIGOT.

I still think context is important here.

If the comment made is in referrence to a game style, AND has been used ON THIS FORUM dozens of times before, I don't see why it should be an issue now. If it was aimed at the Japanese as a market and what they buy on a console, then maybe then yes, it's being used in a racist fashion, but notthe way it was intended.

The word fuck offends people, but we still fucking use it.

I'm not going to ban PantherLotus, don't worry. I can discuss this subject, realizing that some people are frustrated, because it is clear people want to find a reason to be angry.

If you find it warranted, by all means. I do wish we could take this entire thread sans NMH comments and see what the OT thinks. There's a rational group of people just waiting to give their opinion. Apologies for calling you names, too -- I know you are coming out of a place of ignorance and not out of malice. I just find it particularly grating that you seriously can't understand why the word is offensive. As speevy mentioned, I can't seriously imagine anybody using the word in public and not being embarrassed.

We can agree to disagree, but it still isn't up for debate -- it's racist.

The only reason anyone has presented as to WHY it is racist, is that it SOUNDS like another racist term. That's literally it. When asked if there should be no wordplay on "JAPAN" or "JAPANESE", the answer is "yup, there shouldn't be."

That's not going to win any arguments, nor should it. That's being politically correct. Overly sensitive.

The phrase, as it factually means, is merely a type of game from japan with a wacky or absurd style. That is all. Making it into something else is trying to create a racist word from nothing.

If it is collectively offensive to Japanese (the only people who have the right to say so in this matter) then it shouldn't be used. Period. End of story. You don't have to understand why it's offensive. Just know that when you use it you should be wary of your audience.

If we can get someone in the know to testify to it being offensive to Japanese, not Bill in Texas who is just assuming it is, then you should stop using it and that should be the end of it.

The word fuck can be used by people of different ethnicities with almost no consequences given the context.

Try this with racial slurs on friends who have different ethnicities and see if you can get a rise out of them, even in the proper context.

I thought, and still think he was insulting japanese culture. If that is racist to you, then yes.

No, no and no. "Niggy" is fine though. ;p
Can all the racist bullshit end, I really want a review/preview on NMH. If you guys gonna be dicks about this fucking derailment please pm each other.

Its an abbreviation of Japanese. How is that deragotary? Is calling someone a "Jap" deragotory?

What the hell? We're to the point that calling a Japanese person a "Jap" isn't considered derogatory? That's like saying "guys, what's offensive about the term negro? I mean, isn't that just a mispronunciation of the spanish word for black?"

FYI:

Some historical usage of "jappy."

Personally, no. I also don't think people who had "Chief Wahoo" avatars during the baseball season were being racist. But that doesn't mean there isn't a problem with the term or that mascot.

Oh god. you're even worse than Amir0x - at least he was purposefully being ignorant, you're just really truly ignoramous.

No, he wasn't being racist - but he was being purposely ignorant of what the word implied to some people since he knows he can get away with it.

There's a thread started by Sporsk that is either on page 1 or page 2 that has as its sole purpose impressions of the game. You might want to check that one out, as even if this gets back on topic somehow, the on-topic of this thread has nothing to do with reviews of NMH.

So it's the abbreviation alone that makes it offensive - saying "Jappy game" instead of "Japanese game". People seem to be implying that it has a history of being a derogative term - I haven't known this, and from a few Google searches there is no well established history of it.

The derogative term is the one from WW2 times. Is this the same as that? Is any shortening of "Japanese" disallowed now because of that?

Hey, we'll agree to disagree on what is and isn't up for debate as well for all I care. The end result is still the same. No, I don't find banning you warranted. You know, every time I get into discussions with people they say "DO YOU WANT TO GET BANNED?" as if I am going to ban people. I've never done that before. I think the reason this is an issue is because I am a mod, and everyone is always responding to my comments because of this. Before I became a mod I was a vocal poster, and after I am still a vocal poster. Now people think my comments have more weight or something. I don't speak for all neoGAF, I only try to ban and lock threads when warranted. I do that just fine, and don't let my personal feelings interject.

And my only intent here is to find a logical and legitimate reason why all of a sudden something that for two years nobody ever commented on is suddenly being considered offensive. And for the first pages, the best someone came up with is "it sounds like JAP." That's why I disagreed, since that does not seem like a good reason to me.

I can understand the social implications, that it's best not to use it if other people want to feel it's racist, but for me to stop using a phrase or word I have to be given good reasons and I don't feel I have been.

So at the end, if you guys think I am racist or ignorant that's fine. I'm not, but again my posts are not meant to defend my honor. I merely wanted to find out what the reason this was suddenly becoming an issue was.

It must be a culture thing then.

I mean, down here, the word WOG is used to describe people of Greek or Italian origin, and when it IS used, regardless of who has used it, those communities don't batter an eyelid.

Yet when it comes to most other races, most get upset like alot of you guys are now.

I mean, as a Greek myself, I couldn't give a rats ass if someone says wog. I mean, it's words. Whether someone calls me an idiot, an idiot wog, or an idiot Greek, they're still calling ME an idiot.

I don't know if that means anything. Just what I was thinking at the time.

Well it's been pointed out but really the only people who matter are those who may or may not be offended. Amir0x, would you honestly describe a game as "sucking" because of its "wacky Jappy" nature in front of a group of Japanese people?

I hearby coin the term "WACK-A-NESE" to settle this argument once and for all.

Example of usage: "This game is Japanese, and it's also wacky. It's wac****se."

Edit: (It's an Aussie movie)

funny movie. My dad went to school with all those guys.

BUT Maybe it's just me, when you grow up with racism, it kinda becomes water off a ducks back. Not to mention I hate political correctness because it has become out of control these days.

I agree that it's offensive. Hoping to bring some others around to this way of thinking.

Yes, hello, I know there are many Japanese people on these forums and I've used it before, and so has lots of other people for over 2 years and nobody has made an issue about it ever.

If I thought it was offensive, I would never have used it. I think that people here are just being overly sensitive, but again we can agree to disagree.

I am black and I don't mind the N word but some people fly off the hook over it. Especially white people, damn. See that closed Gamestop employee thread.

JESUS CHRIST this thread has been derailed. would you people stop with all the PC talk? its like some sort of stupid crysis, the dx10 of stupid comments

anyway, it seems that the boiz at IGN have similar issues with the game that sp0rsk did, but it's not like it takes away from the entertainment value of the game. its not like people stop splooging all over Mass Effect just because of the gameplay and technical problems. the story is amazing. i don't know why NMH can't get a similar "pass."

Amir0x, I think the reason the term "wacky jappy" upsets people is not because it's racist in itself, but it extends from the same basic attitude that results in racism, namely, being dismissive of an entire group, regardless of the uniqueness of individual members.

Like you said previously, there are a large number of games that fall under the "wacky jappy" umbrella, Katamari Damacy, No More Heroes, Oneechanbara. None of these games really have anything in common with each other, except for the fact they were all made in Japan, and they are all pretty distinct in presentation or gameplay. But just because you don't like a certain class of game (or a certain class of people) is no reason to be dismissive.

There's nothing wrong with noting the similarities of a group of people or a group of games, but it's not right to dismiss them all as being exactly the same without noting their differences. Overgeneralizations are unhealthy.

This pretty much hits the nail on the head and went entirely unnoticed in the discussion.

Quoted for justice.

Forget the internets -- would you feel comfortable using the term in front of a group of Japanese people?

This thread has gone off topic for so long, so if anyone wants to continue this discussion PM me. If anyone was genuinely offended I apologize, and like I said I agree to disagree.

I think your message about being 'offended' gets watered down somewhat when you refer to people as 'fuckers'

Ugh, everyone being so uptight about the use of a word as insignifcant as Jappy does more to hurt racial relations than Amirox saying that No More Heroes looks "wacky Jappy".

Bloody hell people. You're acting like retards.

oops that might be offensive i mean mentally challenged
