No seriously, why is my PS4 so goddamn loud?

Is it a 30+ fps thing? I had no problems with Wolfenstein.

Never had the PS4 be loud and right now Uruks are in their dozens chasing me in the rain while lightning strikes and lots of stuff is happening in Shadow of Mordor. Gorgeous game and lots of characters on screen with no noticeable framerate dip whatsoever.

I don't own one but I borrowed my friends a few times and it starts out quiet and after a bit it turns into a jet engine.

Please describe how your PS4 is set up. If it's still loud on an open shelf in a cool room then you may have an issue. If you're enclosing it in a cabinet then you only have yourself to blame.

Neither my X1 or PS4 makes any sounds. They are super quiet. Might be a problem with your console. Got both at launch. Also I have them in my room so I sit very close. So it's not an issue of distance or space making the noise seem less loud. They really are very silent.

Everyone who calls their ps4 silent is a liar.

Everyone who said their ps4 is silent when they turn the tv up high enough dpesnt seem to realise that same argument could be used for a 360/PS3.

The neighbours cant hear Don Mattrick crying in the basement when he turns his music up loud enough, but I can assure you that doesnt mean hes silent.

You do not run such visually intensive games with tech in a box the height of a european cheeseburger and have silence unless you drown it out.

There is no way rhat people who have their ps4 on a desk in front of me like I do, who have played with the volume right down late at night could call the system silent or even quiet.

The background music while browsing the OS (aka the time where the PS4 has no reason to make sounds apaer from bleeps and bloops) is there for a reason.

My point is, quiet =! I cant hear it because im too far away and/or the tv is too loud.

I may ne wrong though.

I've heard others say this. But I've had my PS4 on for 7+ hours before and any time I've played heavy intensive games where things really ramp up I've never had it raise in sound level. Sounds to me like it's possibly:

I. Faulty consoles (certain consoles for whatever reason are louder than others)

II. Lack of ventilation or some other factor regarding the room and space it's in.

III. Climate? Maybe in more humid areas where a room is really hot?

I really have no idea what it could be. Thing is, clearly it's an issue with some owners as enough have said their PS4 or X1 gets loud after some time. I just don't know why for others they stay silent.

Yeah no. I sit very close to my PS4 and it's very quiet and doesn't ramp up in noise. And I have no reason to lie as I own every system and don't give a shit about brand loyalty or defending brands. I acknowledge that clearly it's an issue for some people. Or they wouldn't be complaining about it. But it seems that this isn't the case for everyone, as folks like myself don't have systems making noises (let alone jet engine noises as some have said when the game gets graphically intensive)..

You have a point about the TV or surround sound possibly drowning out the noise. But I've played with the noise level down very low as my room is next to people sleeping when I play past midnight. And I'm not hearing noises. And again my PS4 is close to me in my room. Don't know what else to say.

I can agree that "silent" should not be taken literally as everyone's perception of sound levels are not the same. But having owned every system each gen, the PS4 and X1 are easily the quietest for me. So again, don't know what else to say. I do think that people should not be dismissive of others with loud PS4s. Just because you don't have a PS4 that is getting loud doesn't mean it's not an issue for someone else (and as we've both stated, there can be many factors that impact noise levels such as the room/space and the audio level of the TV that could explain for the varied experiences).

But I still think these consoles are quiet as hell. And I've not experienced the systems ramping up in a struggled noise after x amount of play time. Sounds like an issue with the fans or the ventilation. I wonder if their systems are caked in dust (if they opened up the shelling).

Edit: Important to note I've gone all digital this gen. That might explain the difference in sound, as I'm not using the disc drive. Although I did buy a couple games on disc for both X1 and PS4 at launch and wasn't getting substantially loud noise.

Mine was loud as hell right out of the box, making me think I had a bad egg. All it needed was decent ventilation on its right side, which is where the console is doing all its work. It's now a whisperer.

You may seriously have a faulty unit, or lack of ventilation for your console

Mine sits on top of a table with plenty of room around it, and sometimes i forget its even on. The light on top of it is the only reason i know, its that quite.

I had a loud one too, then I sent it back to Amazon and got a quiet one. If it bothers you, don't hesitate to have it exchanged.

Mine is silent pretty much except on really hot days when the fan has to run full on all the time to keep from causing a blackhole , it gets hot here in Australia and electronics dont like it. Maybe get yours replaced I dont think it is normal.

I'm almost certain it changes on the game you play.
When I play BF4, its pretty much silent. When I play FF, its a like a Jet.
Same here. Whisper quiet in most games, small jet during certain maps in D3 for example.

The Act 5 bounty "The Lord of the Hill" is an easy one to reproduce it.

I'd be interested in hearing if the silent PS4s and the loud PS4s were made in China or Japan. Didn't Sony run factories in both this time around?

PS4 = Out in the open, well ventilated office flat surface loud as fuck when playing graphically intensive games

Xb1 = silent as fuck whatever we do (kudos to MS, we run tv through that bitch for 6-8 hours then go to game, instant resume no change in noise)

The PS4 is uber sensitive to positioning. I had mine pointing under the TV and it would crank up, it's now sideways on my cabinet infront of the TV so it's pointing outwards to the left where there's free space and it doesn't seem to ramp up as much.

It isn't a quiet system though when playing certain games, every PS4 I've heard when I've been over to multiple friends houses is exactly the same - it's just individual perception, room conditions, distance from the machine and various other factors. OP you don't have a 'broken system'. It's slightly concerning because games are only going to get more demanding.

Returned my one just the other day because it was so loud. I could hear it over my PC and my PC is nothing special in the silent department.

Hmm. And yet I sit close to my PS4 and X1 and have played with the sound off. I legit have never heard the PS4 ramp up in noise like a jet engine. *shrugs* I remember the 360 doing this (the older models) so I know what that sounds like. Actually my PS3 started doing this after 3 years.

Mine is super quiet. Sometimes I can hear the fan crank up but it's very, very quiet. It does make the buzzing noise due to the uneven foot placement, but sticking some business cards under the front right foot stops that.

just got my PS4 yesterday evening, and thank god it's not as loud as some people describe it here. It spools up for DC, but then it goes down.

so far it's an amazing console!

If there are genuinely super quiet ones out there then there's a bigger issue going on with the amount of consoles out there which aren't. Most of my friends have PS4s and I'm yet to hear a 'silent' one.

My console has ramped up like a jet engine when I first bought it, downloading/installing (digitally, not the disk drive) whilst playing Killzone seems to be a bad combination. But for months now it's been pretty normal, but not silent.

Yeah, why the hell is it so loud with content that isn't locked at 30fps like Metro Redux, First Light, etc.?

Loudness has nothing to do with 30 fps... it has to do with cpu/gpu utilization. Your game can be running at 10fps and it could still be running 100% cpu/gpu.

I mean, I know why in the sense the system is working harder to pump out more frames, but how the hell did Sony think a CONSTANT high-pitched whirl was acceptable as soon as the system actually had to work somewhat?

I'm getting a White XboxOne at the end of the month. Is it anywhere near this loud?

Unless it's defective the Xbox One should be way quieter. You barely hear it with the volume turned off.

Mine is quiet, but got LOUD as all hell a few days ago, all of a sudden.
I quickly realized I had pushed the console too close to the back of the shelf it is sitting in while doing some cleaning earlier in the day, and promptly fixed my mistake: in a matter of a few minutes, it went from boiling-hot-loud to warm~ish and quiet again.

So, yeah, people, first of all make sure you are giving it enough space to breathe. It needs quite a lot.

PS4 is very flimsy, too. I had to replace one from Amazon, but the replacement was the same, so I just didn't bother returning it.

It made a really loud noise when the disc was in it. It seems to not do it when it's vertically, so I mostly leave it like that.

Mine goes jet engine from time to time, but only on certain occassions I can reproduce (like going into photo mode in Infamous and TLOU, going to the OS while a game is in the background (Metro Redux has this), playing goddamn Transistor). I wondered a lot if I have a faulty system, or if it's normal... Some games are whispering quiet though.

My system is well ventilated and the room I'm in isn't to hot usually (in summertime it still was the coolest place in my appartment). I'll see if he still tries to take off during winter, when the room should be a couple degrees colder.

Yep, I used to get all sort of hatred directed at me when I suggested my PS4 was loud so I just thought I had a defective unit. I returned mine and exchanged it and the second one was loud from the get-go, the first one was at least quiet that first week. I thought about returning a second time but then my brother got a PS4 and his was loud as well.

I have all the current and previous generation of consoles hooked up and they all are in the open and get great air for cooling and whatnot. Out of all my consoles my PS4 is easily the loudest and that includes my Slim 360 and an original launch PS3. My Xbox One is the quietest.

Edit: I also have a lot of issues with the power and eject buttons that are on the box itself.

I play with a headset on and don't even notice the sound most of the time. I think TLOU is pretty much the only game where it has bothered me because the fan gets unusually loud and it's a pretty quiet game most of the time.

My PS4 is pretty silent too.
Sometimes the fans ramps up a lot and you can hear it, but usually only last for about a minute, then it goes silent again. Its happening to me more now that I have it on a desk (I had it on a table in the middle of the room before) but still its way better that my old 360.

It depends on the softwarte its running.

last of us is loud but nothing im not used to having a ps3 and 360 for so long

destiny is silent though. nothing is as loud as my wii u.

Mine is now dead quiet after I covered the vents with some hand towels lying around :)
/s

Only time the thing is audible for me are first time installs or when I'm playing Killzone Shadowfall, Infamous SS or TLOU Remastered.

Does it say in the manual not to enclose in a cabinet ?
