No Wii U version planned for Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate

In what world does MH4U on Wii U make sense? The one where it sells enough units to justify it? That is not this world.

The world where MH3U on the Wii U was said to have sold well for Capcom near the Wii U's launch. The install base is even higher and they know MH is more popular on consoles then on portable in the west.

There is a market for a console version. MH3U clearly showed that. If you can move your save file, many would double dip for graphics, control, screen size etc.

Ah man, was only really looking to get this if it hit wii u. Never played the 3ds version of the last one, spent all my time on the Wii U version.

Well, so much for a version that alleviates some of the graphical concerns of the handheld game. It would've been nice to finish up 3u and have 4u waiting for me.

Capcom will never release the mainline MH (or portable) to any platform that has MH Frontier released. I mean, that would literally kill the already-small subscriber base.
If they put mainline MH back to monthly subscription model then they may port it to the platform with Frontier already released again, though.

I don't think the Wii U 3 Ultimate was anything special graphically myself aside form the resolution. It has a worse framerate than the 3DS version and it's missing a bunch of details from Tri.

"Smash hit" @ 500k.

A port of a port of a game that was released a 100 times already, and is a niche title outside Japan. 500k sounds pretty okay, specially considering the size of the user base.

yeah I meant target lock, I got used to it REALLY fast and found it more effective that moving the camera myself.

Really? I used it briefly and found it incredibly frustrating, particularly with the need to use the touch screen to activate it. It just seems baffling that it couldn't actually LOCK instead of constantly having to re-center the camera.

I'd venture to guess if you're a Wii U owner, you already own a 3DS.

I read this really often, but this is not what I am experiencing at all.

I know 3 people who have Wii U and they don't own a 3DS. Another one is intereted in buying one since he played Nintendo Land and Game & Wario at my place, he doesn't care about a dedicated handheld gaming device, he plays on his phone.
I talked about this on an other message board, and someone agreed with me.

This is of course anecdotal evidence, but I think that a lot of people simply don't really like playing on a handheld, including me (I don't own a 3DS either).

So there is an audience for Wii U who is not interested in 3DS. Well the reactions here show that people care about "the big screen", so MH4U could make sense on Wii U in the West.

This would be interesting to have the rate of Wii U owner who don't have a 3DS device really. Some hints could be find by browsing Miiverse profiles since last Miiverse update.

I'll be pissed about this when they shut down the MH3U servers. Until then... yeah.

another thing is that if you own a 3DS you don't necessarily prefer it to play MH. I own both versions of MH3U and haven't fired up the 3DS one in months. Much more comfortable on Wii U.

I didn't like it at first, but believe me, it works pretty well. It became the way I played even on Wii U.

I don't want the game to change the camera direction for me.

In this game proper positioning is very important, knowing when and where to attack is pretty much the essence of what makes MH so fun. Because of how the monster move and the concept of monster parts that are more desirable to hit than others, you rarely if ever want to target the center mass (where would constantly camera point). The orientation/angle of your attack is thus extremely important, where in most action game you only need to attack toward the center mass. That orientation is controlled by direction of the pad relative to the camera. If you mess my camera, you mess my orientation you mess the very fun of MH. Same thing with dodging (albeit in MH3U there's an option for dodging with the orientation based on the character not the camera, but I find it awkward kinda like the old tank controls of RE).

I really really don't like monster hunter type games on hand helds and really really like them on TV consoles. This is disappointing news.

Given the reportedly small size of the Monster Hunter team, I wasn't expecting news of any sort of Wii U version until after 4G ships. Maybe they'll put together another quick MH3U-style up-port for the non-Japan audience later, but there's been no evidence of that happening. So we just have to assume it won't until there's an announcement otherwise.

You just have to activate it once on the touchscreen. After that you just tap the L-Button to focus on the monster. It's far from great controls but it works after you get used to it.

Underwater sections are pure frustration, no matter what though.

Yeah, I know how it works, but it's frustrating. Having to pull out the stylus and tap the screen and put it back before the monster attacks you sucks, and constantly holding your hands on both L and R is uncomfortable, I prefer to keep them under the 2ds/3ds and use them when necessary. It fucking sucks. I don't dun into this problem with any other hunting game because they all wised up and either got decent control schemes or came out on platforms where you have a built in second analog stick.

Since they announced MH4, I was hoping for Wii U version. The visuals in all HD glory would be even better.

I like to play on the 3DS, but if I had the possibility to play on WIi U, all my online matches would be on it.

... So? Don't get me wrong, the Wii U version was superior, and not just because of the online. But the 3DS version is way more traditional, fun, and every bit as good, now that it has multiplayer. Sorry, but in the case of Monster Hunter, gameplay matters more than graphics.

Then I better start looking for that circle pad pro for XL T_T

So you're saying gameplay matters more than graphics, so don't make a version that would have both? It makes no sense. Are you implying that the WiiU version would have worse gameplay despite having better controls and visuals?

The only thing that bugs me is the contraction and limited focus of the main series

We go from 4 platforms with Mainline games down to one.

Everything else gets the MMO, China gets the crytek experiment, and IOS gets an old port

When is this series going to break out of its shell? It seems like they decided it was better to be just like Gamefreak with Pokemon

I really don't understand why Capcom chooses to forgo localizing more Monster Hunter titles and releasing them on more platforms. Releasing MHFU on iOS is absolutely nonsensical, because the number of people with those devices that have appropriate controls to play it is probably going to be very tiny. I think those choices combined with poor marketing of that IP are large parts of why it doesn't have more market penetration outside of Japan.
