NPD Delays May Data to "Early July"

Honestly though I won't mind if this kind of delay for the public release of the data becomes a regular thing. It'll get people to relax more around here once they get used to it.

Nah, it'd just mean an extra month of fanboying. NPD runs far behind Japanese/PAL sales to begin with and certainly isn't calmer.

woot i won't be heart broken till next month, so until then woo Alan Wake sold 4 million units and a sequel is coming next year woooo

Somehow we can ge weekly B.O. Numbers, daily TV ratings, and weekly music sales, but games sales come on a monthly basis and are much less informative.

That'll learn those highfalutin sales agers! What, I never much cared for their tomfoolery or shenanigans anyhow. When I was a young man we used to talk about the sales of ball and cups, and yo-yos, and the discussions were always civil! Those were different times though. Besides, patience build character and...

Wouldn't May's NPD ran right in the middle of E3?
Exactly what I was thinking. Gaf would have been no more. The servers would have burst into flame the moment the npd thread went up.

Surely May numbers scheduled to be released right in the middle of E3 had something to do with this.

It is rather ridiculous that we only get the top 10 spots, and now only numbers for the top 5. And its monthly rather than weekly. Why the heck is sales data so secretive?

NPD Day isn't quite as exciting as it used to be. It's become pretty predictable really.

Dammit! Now how will I fetishize stupid sales figures that I shouldn't give two fucks but do because of stupid armchair analysis and trivial fanboy arguments?

NPD Just shot themselves in the foot. They are a cookie cutter moist as entity. Also, did you guys know that NPD stands for Narcissistic Personality Disorder? We should all reflect on this.

BRING THE GIFS!

Some has issues with sales age.

I have worked 8 years in the market research industry previously, and for companies much bigger than NPD. I cannot fathom any change that's so significant that they have to delay delivery for a month. Even if it was a complete upgrade to the software and database, they could still do the upgrade while using the old platform at the same time.

This is unacceptable!!! Who do I phone to complain??!!

P.S. Can we still create a thread and post .gifs for the lulz on that day?

But what if its:

Nintendo DS > Nintendo Wii >> Playstation 3 = Xbox 360 > PSP

How will we know when to celebrate?!

That is so fucked up. Numbers only for the Top 5 is one of, if not the, greatest failures of the gaming industry this year.

Am I remembering incorrectly, or did they delay another batch of results a few months ago? I feel like I remember there being some other delay in the recent past.

I hope so.
I'm not sure that any change in methodology means all that much without some kind of significant increase in market penetration.

Without WalMart or ToysRUs, and numerous other smaller retailers, NPD's coverage of the market may very well be down below 60%, maybe even approaching 50%. At those levels, very significant errors in their data start to become unavoidable. Especially with respect to the smaller titles.

I wouldn't be surprised if a number of subscribers have started having doubts about NPD's accuracy and started canceling their subscriptions. Such a small market coverage can (and often does) result in huge errors in games on the lower end of the sales spectrum. The NPD subscriptions start losing their value when their data is known to be suspect.
