Am I remembering incorrectly, or did they delay another batch of results a few months ago? I feel like I remember there being some other delay in the recent past.

It was a four-day delay to a Monday a few NPDs ago.

i guess sales-age will just have to play games and have fun instead
This is such a stupid myth. Sales-agers play just as many if not more games than people not interested in sales. Stumpokapow and I both went through over 60 games in the 2009 calendar year and we love watching the sales data. I don't know why guys like you can't understand that it's possible to have more than one interest and be able to give them both appropriate amounts of attention.

Not-uh! You guys haven't even seen a game since 1994.

I'm gonna speculate that the "significant change" is restructuring their entire database to allow numbers low enough to accomodate PSP sales in their monthly figures.

Segata

Have you become so obsessed with sales age that you are watching what games Stumpokapow buys

The real reason for the delay is NPD is still counting all the copies of SMG2 and the $149 Wii's that were sold.

NPD has confirmed with Neogaf today that it's not releasing its May video game sales data until early July. Apparently a "significant traffic" is expected during E3 week and in order to avoid traffic jam at the Neogaf forum and "better serve all of our clients and Gaffer", data will not be released until later.

Does this mean we go back to getting a full top 10 and PS2?

Fuck, i hope so.

we'll get a generic top ten and a randomly selected number that relates to one game and we'll have to guess which one. Also, due to budget cuts, we will no longer get PSP or DS sales either.

at first I was like ;lol who cares' but then I remembered how angry I was when the latest Gaga video didn't premier on the first of june and I understood

In fairness, counting the Go must be incredibly difficult. They are likely not equipped to deal with sales numbers under a hundred.

Michael Gallagher, president of the Entertainment Software Association, has said that the games industry needs its own form of top ten sales chart just like film and music.

Speaking during a press conference earlier in the month, Gallagher said that NPD figures only reveal so much to the public and something more transparent was needed.

“I do think that the movie industry has a significant advantage over other forms of media because on Monday morning… whether you are driving, or looking at the newspaper, what’s there: The top ten movies. What’s next to that? Numbers,” said Gallagher.

“I don’t know if they are completely accurate, but we’re trained to believe they are. And that helps the movie industry.

“I think there is thought, because you now have significant revenue, and growth and investment and where that flows you tend to get better information. Reporters ask for it, investors certainly do and then there are consumers. There is an advantage to the companies to figure out a way to report that.

“We are looking forward to that evolution, I’d like to see it move faster,. I think this industry is accomplishing great things across a far great reach, than is traditionally reported.”

Digital sales are gaining steam and NPD keeps track of the sales, but it only releases comprehensive data to its clients – game developers and publishers.

Using Zynga as an example, Gallagher pointed out that the companyÂ’s worth was in the vicinity of $4 to $5 billion dollars, yet the firmÂ’s sale are not tracked by NPD.

“It has a phenomenal rate of growth that is not captured,” he said. “So there is a disconnect.”

NPD released a report earlier this month that showed $4.5 to $4.75 billion spent on digital content in 2009 compared to $10.5 billion on boxed titles, and according to the firmÂ’s David Riley, NPD doesnÂ’t plan to release digital figures publicly any time soon.

“Will NPD be releasing comprehensive digital sales tracking insight into the public domain? We will probably issue some research on a regular basis, but it won’t be at the level of detail that you may be expecting,” Riley said. “This is information we will keep close to the vest. Remember, we are here to serve our clients.”

While a more detailed and accurate list of numbers would be appreciated in the public sector, no list will be entirely complete without sales numbers from Walmart – which doesn’t share its data with anyone, said Riely.

When asked if the ESA had thought of providing a more reliable set of data, Gallagher replied: “Someone had better do it or you’re going to have a trade association doing it. It has got to be done.”

More and more open numbers are the way of the future if we want to accurately talk about video game sales numbers instate of:
"NPD top 10 of 1 month ow no game X only sold 60.000 copies across 60% of physical USA retail stores and the game bombed".

I really hope that Alan Wake did well. Red Dead Redemption, too.

Red Dead is a given, but Alan Wake? Not so much. Funny because I bought Alan Wake and skipped Red Dead.

I'm with you though, hopefully it's a surprise hit.

I think people are going to be disappointed with the lack of insight offered by the May 2010 top 10 NPD list. Red Dead Redemption x2, Pokemon x2, Mario Galaxy 2 and NSMB Wii will eat up 6 spots. May is Mother's Day, so Wii Fit Plus will likely be in there. That doesn't leave room for much else.

That said, I'm looking forward to Galaxy 2 and RDR sales numbers.

I thought we already figured out that Alan bombed. :(

Pahcter (lol) mentioned it as one of the key titles in his monthly predictions ... so I imagine it'll be a top 10 title at least.

That doesn't leave any room for anything else: NPD only gives out the top 5 now, not the top 10.

We only get numbers for Top 5 now, remember. Did we ever get a Top 20 (no numbers) for April?

Doodis said:
Do we actually have a date as to when the numbers are being released, or is it still "early July?"

15-20 minutes.
