what are you saying, there? are you implying i have a sony bias or something?

well news flash....i actually have a good amount of money in microsoft.

if anything, i should be biased *towards* microsoft. but as you'll see from my posts, i remain as neutral as possible.

we're talking about total software spend. the ps4 has a greater digital presence with more digital games, and more f2p games.

so it's natural to assume that the greater retail spend on the xbox one would be at least partially offset, given the ps4's greater installbase.

No, but it's a strange post as there is no evidence to suggest higher digital sales on PS4 than Xbox One. Many people say otherwise that Xbox One has a greater digital presence than PS4. EA for one has said EA Access has surpassed their internal expectations in sales, which offers discounts on digital goods. Games like FIFA, which EA online revenue increased year by year helped by Ultimate Team is more popular on Xbox One for example. PS4 has more games than Xbox One and a greater install base yet the latter sells more retail units; your thinking is nowhere a correlation let alone an assumption.

This also makes me wonder if the X1/PS4 will peak next year or 2016?

Last gen. peaked in 2008 it seems, which was the second full year for PS3, and Wii, and the third full year for the 360.

Thoughts anyone?....Next year does seem to be loaded with good software....

2016's possible.

The third or fourth year of a gen is the time in which most core gamers own at least one of the current gen consoles; Hence why companies go after the more casual/mainstream audience late in a gen (cheaper system redesigns with cut features, "casual/kiddie" games and/or accessories, etc.).

From August-December, PS4 moved 50M+ piece of software. XBOX1 moved more consoles during Nov and Dec, and there were a bunch of games on sale from both MS and retails. Of course they are gonna move more software. People that bought the games for the PS4 pretty much already did. So if you look at 3rd party games besides CODs, PS4 had the higher LTD.

Gears of War and Gran Turismo will both likely be fall 2016 titles. We all those games REALLY move systems. Combine that with slim models and a $250 price tag and that could be the largest fall in history.

That is more logical to me than PS4's digital presence lol. It'll be curious to see what the game sales are ahead.

WiiU number is AMAZING for a system that has no 3rd party support. :-O

HOLY SHIT! If you put that in perspective...

So did the PS4 get its ass kicked in Dec?

It seems like XONE dominated software on titles that I assumed would sell better on PS4 (GTAV)

Because more people buy games at a higher rate than at any other time during the year? I'm not saying any other month the ps4 won isn't important or doesn't "count." I'm saying there's no question as which two months are the most significant.

Implying otherwise is almost like bragging that you beat team A in the regular season, and have the superior win loss record and team stats, but not caring that you lost the superbowl.

It is not like one sale in either November or December equates to two normal sales. I fail to see how the end of the year is similar top the Superbowl, really. Unless you are 2013-2014 Microsoft, a company that had to double down on these two months to recover...

nah. both the xbox one and the ps4 have very healthy software ecosystems. all three systems experienced healthy hardware and software yoy gains.

overall, xbox one was stronger than the ps4 in software sales this month. it wasn't by an extraordinary amount...but xbo's win was still enough to note a difference between the two.

it's impressive considering the 0.5 million ps4 + xbo installbase discrepancy.

and, of course, both ps4 and xbo sold significantly more software than the wii u this december. that's not from first-party weakness, but rather, from a lack of a real third-party ecosystem on the wii u.

as a caveat, in terms of relative % software change, ps4 yoy software had a significantly greater relative % increase than xbo yoy software.

Why cant everyone just be happy that both consoles are doing well. Hell even Wii U did decently. I hope this is the trend. I could care less who wins this Gen, as long as both continue to do well.

Couldn't care less.....ugh.

I want the PS4 to win because it is the more powerful system.

Last-gen peaked when Wii peaked, which was 2008. Since Wii U is out of the picture, looking at just PS360, they peaked much later (2011 for 360 and PS3). In my opinion, that was at least partially due to Wii overshadowing early gen, though, so with that out of the way, they should peak earlier this gen (and make this gen more "normal" as far as peaking/length). From that perspective, this year seems like a year for growth, for sure, and maybe 2016, too. We'll see. Price dropping is always helpful there. :)

*sigh* The thread is starting to go downhill. Ah well, at least we had nearly 60 pages of mostly reasonable discussion.

Last shipment numbers we got was in dec and that was 10 million

Must be 10-11 millions by now...

I think it'll be between 10-11m.

Shipments should be closer to 11 million. I still think the sold through numbers have not passed 10 million, maybe >9.5 million

Somewhere between 10 million and 11 million.

Thanks guys, so it's 18.5mil vs 11mil...

Wow.

I think some of you are going to be suprised at how well The Order does.(at least initially)

I think a lot of this hinges on how well it reviews and is perceived. Unfortunately I think it's going to get docked for being too familiar, despite being really good at being familiar.

New IPs are difficult. InFamous and Killzone had the benefit of being established franchises.

I'm really expecting MS to announce a new, cheaper model for the Xbox One come E3 to compete with an oncoming PS4 price cut. When it's 18.5 mil sold vs 10 -- MS really needs to play that price advantage.

Also why is Xbox software still outperforming PS4 software despite the gap?

I will be surprised if The Order isn't a flop tbh.

Sony or Nintendo being the market leader is really the best case scenario (not that I think the WiiU will even get 2nd place this gen) for the video game industry

Seeing that the Wii was in first place last gen and we got the WiiU because of that, I don't see how Nintendo being first is good for the market industry. o:

Care to explain?
Have you forgotten all the DRM shit Microsoft tried to pull on gamers? Had the X1 sales exceeded the PS4's sales, there was no way in Hell Microsoft would have done a 180 on all their policies

At least Nintendo didn't pull any crazy DRM shit

Actual sell through is probably like 18.5 million vs 10-10.5 million vs ...9-9.25 million?

I'd say 18.5m vs 10.3m vs 9m, but that's just my opinion.

If the Xbox One had actually exceeded the PS4 in sales numbers with the original plans, then that's where the gaming industry would've gone because that's what gamers would've wanted.

It won't receive positive reviews imo (70 Metacritic seems a fair expectation considering how most of the press has already openly decided against it before its release when it became apperent that the game is not Gears of War but a very cinematic and story driven third person shooter), but that has nothing to do with sales these days, it's not like bad reviews stopped Destiny or Watch Dogs from selling million units, nor positive reviews made Bayonetta or other niche games commercial successes.
I see The Order doing well for a few reasons, it's being marketed as (and at its core is) a third person shooter which is a genre with a huge group of fans, the game also features many fancy and cool weapons which is an other attractive point, it has a very interesting setting/story with amazing graphics and that alone will help a lot in making people wanting to play it to know what it's all about, on top of that the release window is really good and gives the game a nice spotlight in February.
I would be really surprised if the game struggles to sell at least 1m units in US+Europe during its launch period also considering the PS4 installed base.

I think The Order will sell alright, it won't shatter any records and I have no idea how reviews will go (probably quite split like some other games this gen) but they have picked a good time for it to release imo and Bloodborne's small delay will give it a little bit of breathing space, not a whole lot else releasing around it.

Looks fun, i'll get it when I get a PS4.
