I miss old NPD....just throwing that out there.

Will be interesting to see if Wii takes off again this holiday season like it did last.

killzone, the halo killer as it was labeled, all the screenshots still don't come close to HALO SALES, how am I crazy? killzone in no Halo or even close. halo is a better review, played, game. you saying otherwise should get you banned. or should one of us be banned for prefering a game.. really?

Now these are the glorious posts of old NPD threads. 10/10.

If it would only do another 3.8 million.

/salute Ardox...if there was ever a great way to go out....it was posting porn gifs in the greatest NPD thread of all time.

(Covering myself: I am in no way supporting the posting porn on neogaf)

both killzone 2 and 3 look and play better as well.

won't deny that killzone is doing more graphically, particularly killzone 2. personally i think the gameplay and controls in resistance are far superior to killzone. resistance 3 is also a great looking game. the effects are beyond any console fps i've played. i like both games, but if i had to choose one it would be resistance all day.

Damnit... those Resistance 3 numbers are disgusting. A very, very good game but totally ignored by so many people. Pathetic really...

As aside to the idea, given the history of PlayStation 3 exclusives sales numbers and the fact that no one seems to buy them, Uncharted 3 is going to do very poorly.

Thus, I hope it shatters the trend of terrible selling PS3 exclusives and nails out more than a million in the first few days, just so we know that people who owns PS3's actually buy some of the exclusive stuff...

The only problem (for me) is that x axis should have been sorted by either year or platform and -not- value.

sony is doing what i would do, putting out quality exclusive games. it's a shame that the north american market isn't really buying them. i hope resistance 3 is a slow burner because insomniac deserves to reap the rewards for this one.

ever heard of God of War 3? If your franchise is consistently good they will come over time, the Resistance franchise is anything but consistent, same with Killzone

I'm not surprised at all at Bit.Trip's sales.....they didn't have a strong retail presence for it and relied on online stores. From the official forums of Aksys:
http://www.aksysgames.com/forums/topic/1409

"How mainstream will the games be stocked at? Specifically, can I find the games inside a Wal-Mart? Or is this just gonna be mainly game-specific stores like Gamestop?

Akselziys
It's a little too niche for mainstream stores like that, so you'll have to most likely focus on specialty stores or from us directly XD"

and you know this how? Besides UK, it's really hard to get accurate EU sell-through in a timely matter and that's traditionally where a lot of Sony exclusives do very, very well, as SCE has been localizing for lots of territories and has big inroads in those FIGS++ markets

EU (minus UK) is strong but NA and Japan are weak for exclusive game sales on the system. In Japan, GT5 has yet to pass GT5Prologue's numbers over there for example. Also, the majority of first party funding is to Western developers which don't tend to move that many units in Japan with a few exceptions of course.

It's crazy how much the Japanese market has changed. Once upon a time, it was USA 1, Japan 2, Europe 3 for our games. Totally reshuffled now with Europe on top and Japan last.

Heck, we haven't sent anyone to TGS to do press since RFOM/PS3 launch.

Nobody cares what your opinion of a good FPS is, bro. There is a reason everyone is calling it a flop; it sold less than 250k (<180k~) based off comparing Deus Ex numbers. And the game is hardly anything special, to boot, which seems to be the general consensus.

Anyway, Gears only selling for a bit more than a week did good..the rest of the sales numbers should trickle into next months NPD. Lol @ Dead Island :O
Hardly anything special? Joke post? The R3 thread is filled with positive praise...very few dislike it.

It's unfortunate that dude bro gaming is taking over peoples minds...maybe R3 needed more zombies and f-bombs? Then it could've been "special".

The first person shooter market is completely saturated. Even if Resistance was a multiplatform title I couldn't imagine it doing that much better considering it takes a lot more money and resources to do multiplatform development. I'm not trying to be negative, but I can't imagine Insomniac's next game doing well whatsoever. I just don't see it resonating with audiences.

That makes as much sense as assuming Gears 3 would do poorly based on Alan Wake, Splinter Cell Conviction, Bulletstorm etc.

Some games just don't make it to mainstream levels, and franchise fatigue is very real especially with franchises that are in that borderline zone of popularity (without being breakout hits) like Resistance, Killzone and Splinter Cell were.

I think UC's popularity is increasing not waning

Though I think that what disappoints some of the PS3 fans that track NPD/sales, is that for all the hype around the big releases; outside God of War III; "they" never see the games selling as much as they expected (compared to the Xbox 360 at least).

For example:
-October 2009: Uncharted 2: #1 NPD with 537k
-November 2009: Uncharted 2: Missing from the NPD Top 20

Compared to:
-October 2010: Fable III: #4 NPD with 580k
-November 2010: Fable III: #5 NPD with 551k

Still, in general...
People need to get the idea in their minds that just because a game is "not charting" or "is not high" doesn't mean is not selling.

Heck, didn't Nintendo shipped over a million copies of Super Mario 64 DS last year...which was a launch title to the DS in 2004 and it hasn't been in the Top 10 for years? or how Kinect Sports for the Xbox 360 never was in the "Top 10" yet it did 1 million copies in around 2 months in 2010? Or Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, which never made it to the Top 10, yet outsold SoulCalibur IV which had both versions (PS3 and 360) on the Top 10.

I would think problem #1 is that Sony has sold far less consoles in Japan and the US this gen than they have previously.

From the outside it seems like one of the most stressful parts of developing games is that you not only have to worry about making a good product, you also have to sit back and hope that the hardware manufactures do a good enough job of exposing your product to as many customers as possible.

If R3 really is 180k at least it means DX:HR didn't fall off a cliff sales-wise. That would be good.

Sony should retool the Resistance franchise so that it appeals more to the dudebro crowd.

Maybe make it about soldiers shooting the shit out of alien monsters.

I'm glad R3 flopped,it's what they get for copying cod with multiayer and not being themselves.uncharted 3 will sell over 1 million guaranteed in nov.

Why do you think Japan hasn't been as attracted to PS3 Ratchet? Also I like Resistance but I believe the release date screwed you guys over and I feel that All 4 One is in even worse shape. Maybe Resistance breaks 1 million (when and if it does Insomniac will be onto bigger and better things) but it will probably be drawn out over a longer period of time than expected. As for All 4 One, the previous PS3 Ratchet games were good for at least 1 million but this one isn't looking so sure.

Why would it? Uncharted games have never exploded out of the gate like that. PS3 exclusives rarely do. But they do well world wide and have legs.

Also, you must be new to sales age to think that 180k is a flop.

Why would you doom them to failure over the multiplayer when the Resistance series has been more about single player?

I should mention that I am more so referring to the numbers from NPD and not the European numbers or Japanese numbers. Also, "poorly" was meant as "not as good as everyone is expecting."

Marius_ said:

First of all, my comment was fairly tongue in cheek. I would've put the smile face with the tongue sticking out, but I seriously hate that shit and I would end up hating myself if I used it. I suppose I seriously suck at sarcasm through an internet forum... sorry.

I have nothing but faith in Uncharted 3 and the reception it will get. It most definitely won't flop (as in not sell anything)... of course not. It will easily make a million in the first month, for sure.. However, we have seen that a lot very, very good PS3 exclusives are almost brushed to the side (sales wise) regardless of quality, hence my hope that is sells past that elusive mark for million + sales figures in the first few days. I really want to see Uncharted 3 be that massive, massive game that Halo and Gears of War are to the 360. God of War 3 was extremely successful, but for one of the most recognizable and largest PlayStation franchises, but it didn't really hit that massive plateau that other franchise exclusives on the 360 can hit - multi-million selling in the first few days on sale - plateau. It did something like 1.1 million in the first month, which is amazing. But for a game like that and a game so highly marketed, that is fairly low compared to something like Gears of War 3. Hopefully, Uncharted 3 can be that game.

Also, Killzone has been steady in terms of consistently good quality since the release of Killzone 2. Killzone 3 was still received very well by the press and still maintained a level of quality... Sure, it has a few issues, but as does every game. Of course, a few on GAF will obviously disagree, but the point remains. I maintain that Killzone 3 should have sold more for being a very good game, but I know people will argue and cry foul at that...

Regardless, my point is that Resistance 3, for being the much, much better game than Resistance 2, should have sold more than it did. ~180k is absolutely terrible for a high-quality PlayStation 3 exclusive. It just seems to be fairly reflective of high-quality PS3 exclusives not quite hitting the level of commercial success they should be.

Yoboman said:

Yes, Uncharted's popularity is growing, I agree. So of course I don't actually believe that Uncharted 3 will do piss poor and just flop.

However, Uncharted 3 still has a bigger hill to climb because of the reception of the second game despite the sheer critical acclaim... 537,000 in the first month isn't exactly blowing the doors off the sales number room. Yes, it has some great continued success in terms of sales figures, but it didn't blow the door off the place... which is what I hope it does when it releases in a few weeks. That is all I am trying to say. Gears of War 3 also had a massively commercially success prequel which sold something like 2,000,000 in the first weekend? That changes the dynamic a little bit. Where are the almost universal midnight launches for Uncharted 3? Has anything even been announced regarding that stuff yet?

Also, Bulletstorm wasn't a 360 exclusive if that is what you were intending to point out.

Syphon Filter said:

Wait... what?

I've seen people claim that Naughty Dog is following the trend of "copying cod" with their multiplayer as well... so by that logic, are you actually hoping Uncharted 3 flops too? I am just confused.

Essentially. Especially for the effort Sony will put behind marketing some of these very same games... I wonder what Sony think of these numbers. Uh oh...

This logic is a bit broken. UC3 faces much more competition in November than GoW3 did in March which is the basis for the uncertainty in UC3's numbers for the people in this thread.

Plus even "back then", God of War II launched with relatively high numbers; even when "next gen consoles" were already out:

March 2007
  1. PS2: God of War II - 833k
  2. 360: Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter - 394k
  3. 360: Guitar Hero II w/ guitar - 291k
  4. Wii: Wii Play w/ remote - 273k
  5. PS3: Motorstorm - 199k
  6. NDS: Diddy Kong Racing - 189k
  7. NDS: Spectrobes - 165k
  8. 360: Major League Baseball 2K7 - 165k
  9. PS2: MLB '07: The Show -164k
  10. 360: Def Jam ICON - 148k

I'd love to see Uncharted 3 with at least 1 million, but following a similar "bump" from 2-3 like God of War did; Uncharted will probably end with around 800k. Hope it's way more than that anyway.

No it isn't. UC2 sold more than any GoW game has individually

In fact outside of Gran Turismos, I believe UC2 would now be the most successful game Sony has ever produced commercially since the Crash series on PSone.

Shipment figures for both were in the 4millions if I recall, except there has been one difference. Uncharted 2 has been bundled, giveaway, re-released, and repackaged. GoWIII hasn't received half the help UC2 been given. I don't really think you can say its a stronger franchise, since its been pushed far harder.

in the states, where npd reports numbers, no uncharted has sold more than any god of war.

not sure what the reporting period will be for october (i'm guessing it'll go from october 2-october 28), but uncharted will basically have an entire first month of sales, from the start of november, all the way through black friday. it's going to do very well.
