Before arranging a meeting with a Kremlin-connected Russian lawyer he believed would offer him compromising information about Hillary Clinton, Donald Trump Jr. was informed in an email that the material was part of a Russian government effort to aid his father’s candidacy, according to three people with knowledge of the email.

The email to the younger Mr. Trump was sent by Rob Goldstone, a publicist and former British tabloid reporter who helped broker the June 2016 meeting. In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Trump acknowledged that he was interested in receiving damaging information about Mrs. Clinton, but gave no indication that he thought the lawyer might have been a Kremlin proxy.

Mr. Goldstone’s message, as described to The New York Times by the three people, indicates that the Russian government was the source of the potentially damaging information. It does not elaborate on the wider effort by Moscow to help the Trump campaign. There is no evidence to suggest that the promised damaging information was related to Russian government computer hacking that led to the release of thousands of Democratic National Committee emails.

Oh, this guy?

Junior is going DOWN

Also I feel the thread title sorta buries the lede. We all know Russian Govt wanted to help Trump. But the moneyshot is the quote where Goldstone prepped Don Jr for the meeting.

Where is Bruce Springsteen when we need him

NYT has been pretty masterful with the drip allowing them to come out like idiots only to be followed up with, no, you lie stories

They're dripping this information out at just the right intervals for them to repeatedly put their feet in their mouths.

So you’re pretty much copping to influencing an election at behest of a foreign power. They tell you in a fucking email that this is a government job and you still go? Okay.

This has been a very carefully orchestrated set of leaks, designed to leave Donald Trump Jr. holding the bag. First leak gets responded to. Second leak directly contradicts Jr's response, he counter-responds. Third leak bombs the counter-response.

Someone's lining up fire.

You think this mother fucker protected his email at all?

Please. He's going down hard and Daddy will wash his hands of him. Another pawn for the big baby.

Depending on what they dig up on Trump's company, NY State might be able to prosecute Jr, in which case Trump couldn't do shit.

How exactly does this work? Can they kick anything down to the state to be prosecuted or is it only certain crimes?

The success of others absolutely infuriates me.
Lawfare's Susan Hennessey said on NPR that the matter of collusion might not be technically illegal. I'd honestly love to see them play up that angle.
