Obama announces support for same-sex marriage

yeah this will def cost him the reelection. Im curious to know if some people will still call him a muslim if he supports gay marriage.

Because he's a secret Muslim. Who is secret gay too.

Obama has secrets.

Well, that's true, it does distract from the economy, but I'm not sure how much. And why would he want to? Unemployment is going down, hiring is on the rise, the stock market is restored to its former levels and gas prices are holding steady below $4. Obama's doing alright on the economy.
That's not the perception, and the reality is that the economy is still not strong.

Excellent. Now if we can just get him on board with ending the raids on medical marijuana providers, then he will be a fairly solid pick for me in November.

Ah right. It should be obvious that the Republican strategy is to use buzz words to say exactly the opposite of what they mean. This will be just like debating how if we let white kids and black kids go to school together, it'll be the end of the civilized world.
It's more than doublespeak, it's the GOP's brilliance at creating euphemisms for bigoted and regressive policies.

Basically. It's playing on fears of what could happen if Obama is reelected, which is already a huge plank of the 2012 GOP platform.

It's hard for them to point to anything terribly egregious thus far in his presidency, so inciting paranoia and fear for his actions from 2012-16 will be key.

I think it was the right thing to do, but I'm not sure how it will affect the election.

I figured he had the re-election. I think he still does but if by chance he loses now this will be blamed. And if that happens, you will never see a politician publicly support gay marriage again. That's a big reason why it would be in the best interest of anyone who supports gay marriage to vote for him.

cool.

now obama has the opinion of every other reasonable human being, but it still doesnt mean jack to congress or individual states.

baby steps, i guess.

I know you feel like you have to defend this comment, but just don't. Accept that this is a historic and momentous announcement that is nothing but good.

President Obama has done more for the LGBT community than any president in history, and this announcement will only further that. Moreover, this makes gay-marriage a key issue in the election which will ultimately move it forward even more.

What the fuck more do you want?
I've tried today. Don't bother.

About time. I have a feeling that this is because he needs more enthusiasm and money from the gay base more than anything else, but that doesn't really matter as long as it helps move things forward.

I felt super silly when I clapped my hands in the car on the way home.

Feels good to have a President who's not a complete bigot.

A move with integrity. But I think a dumb political move. He just gave the Republicans their culture war they've been unsucessful so far at starting. Politically it would've been smarter to wait until after the election. But I gotta respect him for doing the right thing.

I thought that was a joke until I actually went to the website. Wow.

But really, good for him. Announcing this before the elections is pretty bold.

....well, we're fucked. I hope Romney actually IS the kind not batshit insane financially responsible conservative Dubya tricked people into thinking he was. But he's probably not. Actually, I kind of think he might be the antichrist.

Not that this isn't the right thing to do, of course. I'm pretty sure this stance will make him unelectable in a few swing states. As far as the south goes, while I understand that a dem has no chance of winning southern states in this climate, this is going to make the popular vote look like a slaughter.

Maybe internally his team is for some reason predicting no possible chance of re-election, so he's doing this to set a precedent for protecting the civil rights of gays, so that maybe in 10 or 20 years our country will actually recognize them as full human beings.

This is a very brave thing to do. Especially so close to the election.

I'm curious to see what Romney's response is. He'll look like a flip flopper and a copy cat if he changes his stance. But to condemn this decision would be worse.

“Log Cabin Republicans appreciate that President Obama has finally come in line with leaders like Vice President Dick Cheney on this issue,

Considering Cheney has a gay daughter, he's an outlier among the GOP.

Your pessimism is misplaced. This will not lose him the election and his team certainly does not believe he can't win.

I almost did a toughdown dance in front of the desk of a conservative right cowoker and chanted "FUCK YOU! IMMA GO MARRY A MAN!"

But instead I've been humming "I'm proud to be an American" near him.

Romney today on Gay Marriage:

Mittens said:
Well, when these issues were raised in my state of Massachusetts, I indicated my view, which is I do not favor marriage between people of the same gender, and I do not favor civil unions if they are identical to marriage other than by name.
